Minnesota Becomes First State To Ban BPA

1932 views

Minnesota has enacted the "Toxic Free Kids Act," which will ban bisphenol-A (BPA) in sippy cups and baby bottles. Minnesota joins Suffolk County, New York, which banned BPA earlier this year. Other states and counties, as well as the federal government, are considering bans on the potentially dangerous chemical, which has been linked to all sorts of adverse health effects. The Minnesota ban goes into effect in 2011. (Photo: tiffanywashko)

Great. They banned BPA from bottles and cups but what about the all the other places it is found? Like canned food, and the lining of cans of baby formula:

@wgrune: One reason might be that sippy cups and bottles are used over and over, and are often washed in hot water, which some folks believe causes them to leech more harmful stuff. With canned food, you use it once and that's it.

Ever thought about whats emitted into your food when you're microwaving your wife's tupperware over and over?

I live in MN (represent) and I was happy to see this. It's about time!

MissPiss - we had just bought a new tupperware set right around the time the BPA thing started getting crazy. It happened to be one of the plastics you're not supposed to use (I forget the numbers now) so I decided not to use them anymore. We literally only had them like a week or two, but of course, Target refused to exchange them because they were opened and used. Whatever... bought a replacement set at WalMart instead.

"Toxic Free Kids"? I should hope so. You'd have a hard time charging for the kids if they were toxic.

I guess "Toxic-Free Kids" tugs at the heart strings more than "BPA-Free Bottles". Who could oppose toxic-free kids?

They didn't grammar that title very well

My "sippy cup" was a lead mug and I was lucky to have it.

I wouldn't take a free kid, toxic or not.

@cmdrsass: I'm sure that there's more than a few of us who would be happier with "toxin-free kids"

@undefined: @cmdrsass: Why would I want a toxic kid, even if he or she was free?

I've just about had it with the "(your cause here) free kids" stuff.
Just tell us that you think (whatever) is bad and you think it should be banned. Leave the damn kids out of it.

@bnelson333: What's even scarier is what is used to make/line cans used for canned goods/food. Phtalates, google it! I'm always completely amazed how all these companies can get away with using such toxic chemicals in everything. We really are a human experiment in the making! And dont get me started on what's in beauty/skincare/bath products!!! Parabens, google that too! They are trying to kill us, I tell ya!
