Jack in the Box Employee Provides Great Service, Frightening Company Loyalty
I believe that it doesn't really matter what you do for a living, as long as it fulfills you, and you try your best to be good at it. (But then, I blog for a living, so what do I know?) Kevin had an experience at a Texas Jack in the Box that combined "Above and Beyond" customer service with unusual dedication to a company.
He put together the above photo collage, and mailed it to us with a note:
I stopped off at Jack in the Box in Corinth Texas for a quick snack. The drive through guy was very cool, my order was taking a bit to cook so he just talked to me for a minute. He mentioned that he had been working for Jack int he Box for over 8 years, and said that he is on kind of a tour right now working at assorted locations so he could hopefully move up in the company some day. When he went to hand me his change I noticed that he actually had Jack tattoo'd on his arm, a real tattoo of Jack in the box! He was nice enough to let me take a picture of it along with a signature on my receipt and his schedule...that apparently he keeps handy for his loyal customers that like to know when he is working. Overall the most dedicated and nicest drive through clerk I have ever met and way to surreal to not share with the consumerist
I can't decide if I would really, really want this guy to be my manager, or if it's a scary prospect. Still, kudos to him and to his adoring fans. No, really.

I was pretty drunk one time going through a jack in the box drive through (I wasn't driving). I ordered something that they didn't have and they didn't realize they didn't have until we got to the pickup window to pay and get our food. They simply removed it from our order without charging us for it and told us when we got up there. I was in a typical mood, remember I was drunk, and talked the manager into giving us something of equal cost for free as a way of making up for the inconvenience. In hindsight the manager probably knew I was really drunk and felt it was better to give me a free $1 item than to listen to my drunken rambling. Either way the free burger was great.
I remembered his name and asked about him the next time I was at that Jack in the box location a few months later. I found out he had been let go, it was a sad day.
Even though this really isn't relevant, it's still a cool story.
@unobservant:
Judging by his insane schedule, I'd guess not :P Working 8 hours/day, 7 days a week, in the evenings? I would die after a few weeks on that schedule.
2PM to 6AM ??? ......that's like a 16 hour shift. He must make a lot of money working those kind of hours at Jack in the Box. Blake works 72 hours a week, that's 2 full time jobs. I on salary and only work 40 hours most of the time and I can't imagine what it feels like to work double the hours I'm working now?
@pb5000: Hopefully he wasn't let go when his manager found out he was giving away food to drunk people.
Ah, yes, there's something similar to that at Wendy's at UT Austin. His name is Junior. More info: [www.thewendysguy.com]
@exploded: It's obvious he's SERIOUS about moving up. He's probably at the point that he knows EVERY aspect about operating a location. If he's roving between stores, he may be nearing or at the level of regional manager.
@dresden: Absolutely. Who cares what kind of job it is. He's doing it and he means it. I just wish i had half of that passion for my job. Who's willing to bet that Blake goes home happy every day? I have a decent job, but i go home feeling sorry for myself every day.
Also, dude works 7 days a week. That's some no bullshit dedication.
@Boulderite: I know that guy! Or rather, he gave me food once. He's insane, but cool! Disconcerting at 11PM too.
umm, does the "Ask what you can sub for fries on a combo? (for an extra charge)" line and the fact that he hands out a business-card type thing to customers who "follow him around" make anyone else think he's making a bit on the side selling something other than burgers? I think something like this happened at KFC a few years ago, if you asked for "Extra Biscuits" or the like, until a family who wanted more biscuits ended up with some weed in their order
@David Schripsema: He works a double shift on Monday and Saturday, so he actually works 9 8-hour shifts in a week
@pecan 3.14159265: If he's been with the company long enough, he might be making okay money (for fast food). I mean, the In 'n Outs here start at something insane like $10/hr, even.
I bet he has roommates, anyway.
@nakedscience: He could have a few roomies and be saving money up to start his own franchise. Or he could be dead broke, I don't know what they pay at jack.
You know what, this guy will keep busting his hump and end up either running a region or owning a lot of stores.
Possibly corporate level and when he can slow down to have a family his kids will only know dad pulls a mill+ a year and they love life.
I work at a car dealer where the now GM and former GM (who went to a brand new Mercedes store to GM) both started as friggin lot porters. 40 years later and they pull 6 figures up from minimum wage.
@Skunky: If someone has been at a company with such high turnover, like a fast food chain has, there has to be a reason why he hasn't up.
Maybe he has just finished school and is just going full time. Still, there is more to the story as to why he's working 72 hours. Maybe it's his decision, but that's still not any way to live.
@pecan 3.14159265: Well you never know, he may just be one of those people who's lives revolve around their job. His just happens to be working at JITB. When I bartended I was working far more than 40 hours a week, I did it because I enjoyed it. And the money wasn't bad either. :)
@exploded: It's not any way for YOU to live, nor me, but not everyone is the same. Some people LIKE working a lot. Are they insane? Yes. But they exist.
@Papercutninja: My sentiments exactly. My job is one glorified on TV as "prestigious" but i could care less, I don't like it. He seems to love his. I'm envious. Also, he doesn't just work 7 days a week, he works double shifts on mondays and saturdays!
@Lo-Pan: I dunno what they pay, but after 8 years, even if you started at min. wage, as long as you are getting regular raises, you wouldn't being TOO bad. For fast food.
@Papercutninja: @dresden: I suppose so... and I suppose not.
I LOVE my job so much, it's amazing... but unfortunately I tell people things that they don't want to hear and get yelled at lots and just not to nice stuff said, rude attitudes, etc.
I think people in general need to be nicer and stop assuming that yelling at me is going to make me do something for you that I'm not allowed... that's totally not worth my job.

Hey, if more people were enthusiastic about their jobs like that, the world would suck less for everyone.
