El Pollo Loco Says It Will Honor Your Broken KFC Coupons On Mother's Day
Bill just emailed us with a link to this tweet from the El Pollo Loco rep on Twitter. Might be worth a shot if you were turned away by your local KFC yesterday and you think a free chicken meal is the perfect way to say "I love you" in motherese.

@Nick1693: Then Hardee's can offer free chicken sandwiches to KFC customers who were rejected by El Pollo Loco.
Eventually you'll be able to redeem your unused coupon at your local diner for a free ginger ale.
@Nick1693:
I think that this will not be a massive run, 1 who goes fast food for mothers day and 2 it would be a slow day for them anyway.
They are probably going to wish they didn't ban the PDF coupon that Oprah put out before the couponprinter program was used. [weblogs.baltimoresun.com]
@nakedscience: Are you 100% sure about that? I've seen some pretty weird Consumerist stories with the "Unacceptable food" tag.
MMMMMMmmmmmm...ultra-processed psuedo-chicken shortages at KFC, or malnourished chicken marinated in rancid limeade over a fake0-briquet gas grille?
I think I'll go Popeye's instead, since Church's went away from here...it's not free, but free stringy chicken jerky isn't my choice of chicken meals for Mom...
@nakedscience: Won't be an issue. If you have ever worked in a bookstore, you will know that this mad rush is solely due to oprah lemmings, and their need to follow oprah any way she leads. Do you know how many people bought the oprah edition of "east of eden"? The $30 something hardbound when there was a perfectly good $8 paperback sitting right next to it. It wasn't even a good book in the first place!
To summarize, unless oprah tells people to go to El Pollo Loco, it won't be an issue.
i second that. no line, no wait, real size servings. I even bought a corn tortilla soup for their (lack of) trouble.
@jallen80:
we had a line but it moved swiftly and from the time it took to place my order (bought food too) to the time it took to walk to the salsa bar my order was ready to go.
@Nick1693:
El Pollo Loco just did a 2 piece giveaway and it went off without a hitch. They're always cooking tons of chicken and stock for it.
Some KFCs are slower so they don't stock the excess needed to meet the demand.
@Corporate_guy: Assuming that Oprah's servers would later be hammered, I saved that PDF. I've uploaded it at:
The one thing I noticed is the fine print which states "Valid only if printed from UnthinkKFC.com." They can reject it as it was printed from Oprah's servers. I may print it out and try it later at a different KFC.
@Jacob Morgan: The promotion hasn't been cancelled... just good luck finding a place still taking the coupon.
The other thing is that "honor" doesn't necessarily mean "free meal". All El Pollo Locos currently "honor" all competitor's coupons, for $1.00 off a purchase of $5.00 or more... the same discount you get for filling out the survey on the back of the receipt. If you want, stop by on Mother's Day and report back to me how it worked out for you.
Yeah, except for the self fermenting salsa bowls. That stuff is bubbling by the end of the day and they just shovel it back in a bucket to be added to a another batch the next day. That's just nasty. Not to mention the workers not grasping basic workplace hygiene.
My local KFC refused to honor the coupon yesterday, even though I had called about 15 minutes before I got there. They did NOT offer any rain checks. My family took our coupons to El Pollo Loco last night and the coupons were honored at face value. The only thing the manager did was go to the KFC website to confirm that they were legitimate coupons. From now on, if we're going out for a chicken dinner, it will be at El Pollo Loco!
El Pollo Loco is much better and since the nearest one is some 90 miles from my house I always buy a "bunch" of their chicken.They used to be a lot cheaper though but still have some good specials.I can replicate their flavor on my BBQ but it is their salsas and side dishes which is convinient.Good stuff.

This is a good thing for them to do, except do they have enough "chicken" to do this, or will they make the same mistake KFC did?
