As of May 1st, Jewel-Osco, the Chicagoland grocery chain, no longer accepts expired coupons. "This practice is being phased out given the wide range of in-store money-saving opportunities, including the use of Jewel-Osco's Preferred Card, regularly advertised sales, availability of online coupons, and special in-store promotions," a spokesperson said. Jewel-Osco? Damn, that brings back memories. When I was a kid, we had Skaggs Alpha Beta (and, seriously, who thought that was a good name for a grocery store?). Skaggs was bought out by Jewel-Osco. The Jewel-Osco became Winn Dixie. The Winn Dixie became Albertsons. And the Albertsons went out of the business because of a newly built Super Walmart. Now, the good old Skaggs/Jewel-Osco/Winn Dixie/Albertsons is nothing but an empty lot full of memories.
I remember that coupon policy, though. That's one of the main reasons my mother used to drag us over to Jewel-Osco. We're not a terribly organized family and coupons do tend to expire before they get used in my parent's house. It's a shame, but understandable.
Yeah, accepting coupons regardless of expiration date was common practice at most major stores. Why create a fuss over a few cents here and there and piss off a customer spending a couple bucks or more?
I'm not sure if I'd file it under This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things, but I'm guessing part of the problem in these tough economic times are the number of frugal living stories that were broadcasting this store policy. Not sure how comfortable I am with blaming the messenger, though.
@dantsea: Consumers now have more access to information and can easily share what expired coupons will yield the best deals and can easily buy/trade for them online.

Jewel-Osco took expired coupons? Heck, you learn something new every day.
