And if you want fancier equipment, hit up a nearby yard sale. People are always selling off barely used equipment that is just taking up space for cheap.

No go in cities. Also, I find the ritual of going to the gym, as well as the community aspect, to be motivational.

Re-Re-Repost.

But you're forgiven because of the kickass nature of the article.

@SexCpotatoes: yeah I was going to say. Doesn't this come up about every 6 months? I know i'm a very small percentage but I actually get use out of my gym membership. Doing it at home... there's so many distractions. Like websites, video games, house work, playing with my dogs...

@thefranchise2: I bought useless equipment at a yard sale for $10. I resold it at my yard sale the next year for $20 after NOT USING IT all year. So you might even make a profit!

And put it wear? On top of my bed? LOL. Yay apartment living. :)

@nakedscience: And that should be "where". I am awesome today.

You can save money if you use them, but I think for many people they just become very expensive clothes hangers. That's why they end up in yard sales.

I set up a home gym last winter in the basement. It's nice to be able to watch whatever you want on tv and jam out as loud as you want, and workout anytime you want.

I figure we save about $15-$20 a month on gas (if we drive 10 miles roundtrip to the gym 4 days a week), and about $70 in membership fees. Also the fact, even if it is cold or raining outside, you don't lose the desire to workout.

As superhumanben said, too many distractions at home. Its always like "I'll work out after this, after that, after cleaning my room, after cooking"... never happens.

I am lucky that way though, both my Work and my Apartment complex have free gym. The one at work is very well equipped too. Apartment gyms are mostly underpowered, but its okay as long as they have freeweights and one treadmill/elliptical machine.

@Mr_Human: Why a no go in cities? Do you mean if you live in a small space (like me)? If so, I agree, though some people have room in condos or houses in city.

If you mean there are no yard sales, you are mistaken. There are always yard sales. :)

@Lucifer_Cat: I agree. The mental aspect behind going to the gym and having nothing to do except work out is required for me to get a proper workout. The second best thing you could have is a super dedicated partner with similar fitness goals.

user-pic

@nakedscience: Yes, because of the small apartments :) And I'm a big fan of NYC flea markets

user-pic

@Mr_Human: Yeah, I live in a small apartment, too. I could probably find room for a small bike or something, but I'd have to move stuff around, and then it'd just be more cramped...

user-pic

@IamTCM: "The second best thing you could have is a super dedicated partner with similar fitness goals." is a code-sentence for "horny girlfriend."

user-pic

@nakedscience: It's easy to buy some freeweights and do basic lifting exercises in an apartment with the help of a chair or small bench. I used to do it all the time.

user-pic

@Lucifer_Cat: I tell myself that cleaning the kitchen, vacuuming and doing laundry are the equivalent of a workout. My ass begs to differ

Buy one of these and learn how to use it. $50 or so. Best done outside, but indoors feasible once you learn to control the weight so it doesn't slip and bash through a wall.
