@piratebull: Heh, then that may be a matchup (yeah yeah, UAW isn't a "company"). But as is, I see a pretty easy Comcast win.
@piratebull: Without the UAW cars would be cheaper. That's because your 12 year old would be making them on Saturdays.
Kidding aside, I am not a fan of unions, especially UAW. I am for worker's rights but a union isn't the way to go. Instead, I think a manager should be evaluated by his or her underlings and the manager's job lies in the outcome.
Comcast...
Unlike Time-Warner, whose cable apparatus is a part of a larger company, Comcast solely exists as a cable company- and you'd think that would give the FOCUS.
instead...
They are responsible for being players in most anti-net neutrality legislation, started the ball rolling on passing laws preventing competition by municipal ISPs, etc. THEY ARE EVIL.
Never have and probably never will own a GM car so because of that I can't really place my vote in favour of GM. Yes they took government loans/bailouts and, yes, they are a failing business but I can't immediately recall any stories that are so horrible that would give them the title of worst company in America.
I HAVE, however, known people who have had to deal with Comcast's bullshittery... so I guess they get my vote.
@citking: If not a union, then who? I think unions can be greedy and unrepresentative of the best interests of the workers, but you certainly can't count on management to set up the company for the benefit of the workforce.
I honestly think GM is a worse company, as they have just tossed away any viability in today's market, time after time. However, I voted for comcast (despite the fact I think they are improving)...due to the fact I have comcast, and I think $135 is way too much money for 6 mb internet and basic+digital cable. Also, they won't carry Boomerang, and implemented a data cap (even if it is generous for now).
@eightfifteen: Because for all their past errors, GM is making a fight of it. They're trying to boost product quality, boost customer service, and pull themselves into the 21st century. (And I say this as someone who hasn't willingly driven a GM car in decades.)
Comcast, on the other hand, is degenerating in all those areas.
@eightfifteen: Exactly, how the hell is Comcast winning?
Throttling and being generally crappy versus terrible cars, responsible for absorbing billions in taxpayer dollars, failure to adapt, more billions in taxpayer dollars...
This should be a no-brainer!
@Dafrety:
To be fair, technically you don't NEED cable so Comcast IS avoidable.
I've gone without TV service for a year and a half now.
(Comcast still got my vote though :-p )
Comcast is my mortal enemy...had to go with them. GMs death spiral has been a long time coming...wish it were Comcast instead. Controlling what information people receive/send is an immense responsibility that has all sorts of potential for abuse. It scares me to have an outfit as flagrant and irresponsible as Comcast controlling the flow of information for millions of people.
@nerdtalker: Comcast is a monopoly in many areas and wil no doubt hinder, cripple or stall the broadband for all plan that Obama has been working on. They lock competition out fo markets and force municipalities to declare themselves illegal so comcast can be the only provider in a small market.
Comcast, really?
Just because your internet's a little slower than you think it should be on a saturday night while you're downloading too much porn, and they raise your rates a couple dollars every couple of years?
GM's a company that wouldn't exist right now if the government hadn't given them billions dollars. When was the last time they even made a profit?
I cannot believe Comcast is winning this one. We can't avoid the spiraling economy. We can't avoid paying taxes to prop up a crappy company that doesn't know how to operate efficiently.
Don't like Comcast TV? Get DirecTV or stick with broadcast television. Don't like Comcast High Speed Internet? Get DSL from another company that offers it. Don't like Comcast Digital Voice? Go with your local traditional provider or another digital provider, or just go with straight cell phones.
Comcast is avoidable; GM's cost to the American public isn't. I've never had problems with Comcast either. I'm really appalled at these results.
@citking: Unfortunately, an employee evaluation would be bad for management and bad for workers. Too many opportunities for management to buy off workers for a good eval, and too many opportunities for workers to unfairly oust a manager.
Besides, middle management isn't usually the problem.
If we had any kind of worker protection in this country, unions might be as irrelevant as some like to claim. Until then - or until we learn from our friends in Argentina - unions are about all that guarantee workers some kind of voice in their company, and assure some kind of protection against abuse from management.
@nforcer: Yes, but GM isn't the one who bailed out GM. Our government bailed them out with our tax money. GM just accepted the funds, as most companies would have done under the circumstances.
I'm sick of people blaming the bailout on the failing companies. It's not their fault - companies fail all the time. It's our Congress who voted for the extravagant and futile spending.
@Coop: Technically, Comcast is the sole feasibly ISP to 33% of America. Technically, I'm required by my university classes to use internet resources while at home. No brainer for me.
@nforcer: Good idea on paper, and in an ideal world, would probably see GM "winning" this battle instead of Comcast, however, the fact of the matter is that Comcast has a monopoly on 33% of America whos options for an ISP is Comcast, Comcast, and more Comcast.
For that very reason, comcast is not avoidable. Unless you're telling me there's some secret fiber optic laying by my house underground I'm not aware of. I honestly would love for that to be the case.
@GuinevereRucker: Yetsthe government assessed the funds for the bailout. But would there be any reason to bail them out if they had operated efficiently in years past? No. What about them running ads in Florida of one of their SUVs driving through snow? What about producing the same vehicle with different names for three of their brands instead of just one? What about refusing to invest in energy efficiency, instead pumping money into SUVs that nobody wants?
GM has been making mistakes for a long time. It's just, with the state of the economy, they can't afford to be inefficient anymore. If they'd gotten their act together years ago, nobody would be paying to bail them out. The only thing that's worse than having to bail them out is knowing that it could've been avoided if proper action had been taken.
Anyway, that's still not the point. Regardless of how GM got our money, they're still getting our money. You have a right and ability to refuse paying Comcast. The government, not so much.
@cabjf: Wait a sec, in what fairytale land is the purpose of organizational structure "the benefit of the workforce"??
I voted for Comcast because, unlike with GM products, they have a monopoly in my area. I can (and do) avoid GM products because there are still other automakers out there...with Comcast, they're the only game in town for cable, so I have no choice but to pay them (and put up with their horrible service and support) if I want cable TV or Internet.
I vote for GM because they cut the retirees' insurance. My father is a retiree and has cancer and they cut off his insurance right when he needs it. My mother, OTOH, has never worked for GM and is an innocent party but is just as harshly affected in this, especially if they file bankruptcy and the pensions are impacted. GM deserves to go down in flames. I hope they never sell so much as another bolt. I
@nforcer: There's arguments both ways. Part of the reason we're trying to bail them out is just based on how many people they employee and how many other jobs/industries are related (steal for example).
As for Comcast being a choice, they're not where I live. I live in an apartment building, I can't have a satellite or have an antenna showing. If I want internet it's Comcast as well. They've done everything in their power to prevent FIOS from coming to my city and in the main part of the city they've done so.
GM is at least trying something, Comcast knows it sucks and just doesn't care.
@eightfifteen: Because if you don't like GM - DON'T BUY GM.
If you don't like Comcast - well for me, that is my only choice of internet (without spending at least twice as much or dial up).
@Papa Midnight: I believe the statement that Comcast is the sole feasible ISP to anyone in America is incorrect. I've always lived in a large market area, however I have always been under the impression that satellite internet is available EVERYWHERE.
@karmaghost: No they definitely shouldn't. This is another example of the underage demographic voting on consumerist against Comcast cause a friend of a friend of a friend said they were terrible and raped their mom. Half the folks here aren't even old enough to drive, let alone understand the true 70+ year suckage that is GM.
You hate Comcast cause they charge you a $2.00 convenience fee? Oh boo hoo. Go talk to the guy thats had to replace the engine in his Lebaron four times since 2000.
@No_Moleste: So now we're voting against companies because they might have the ability to abuse their power in the not-too-distant future? Nice.
@Firesoul1: Yeah that really compares to shafting the American economy and people, destroying thousands of jobs, and producing cars that require thousands of dollars of repairs within 5 years of purchase.
But yeah, it sucks you had to wait an extra 4 days to play counterstrike. So yeah that's definitely the worse of the two.

How about UAW?
