Track The H1N1 Swine Flu Across The Globe
Everyone's still unsure whether the H1N1 Swine Flu is a mild outbreak or something worse, but in the meantime you can amuse yourself with this grim Google Map of suspected and actual cases around the globe. It will give you something to do until the time comes when you have to decide between joining Randall Flagg or Mother Abagail.
There's also a crowd-sourced version of an outbreak map—click here to view it. (Thanks to Ribex!)

There were ≈100 deaths today from non-H1N1 Swine Flu .
That is if the CDC statistics are correct and we divide 36,000 deaths by the number of days in a year.
CDC Flu Facts I'd also love to see a map of the 13,000+ preventable DUI related deaths that occur in the US.
On the consumerist end, some airlines are waving fees to change travel plans due to the Swine Flu. Fox News (I do wish I had a better source)
From the BBC:
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the US - which has 40 confirmed cases - was taking the issue "very seriously".
Well, that's it. We're all doomed.
@LetMeGetTheManager: Hope so! I had a ham sandwich for lunch today.
And it was fantastic. Take THAT, swine! ;)
@MaxSmart32: Times like this I wish I hadn't left the safety of my Nebraska cornfields. Hemingford Home is out there somewhere..
@LetMeGetTheManager: Yes, in spite of Russia & China banning US pork products, you cannot get the flu from eating the products.
@DeadWriter: "There were ≈100 deaths today from non-H1N1 Swine Flu ."
I assume you're implying that the swine flu panic is overblown. But this flu appears to have a 7% kill rate (compared with a more typical 1%) and seems to affect young, healthy adults. It also appears to have airborne transmission. That's the big deal.
@Canino: It does, until the hand of God - literally - comes down and smites him.
Love Stephen King, love that book. Hate the last three pages.
@ElizabethD: It's because of Mexico, it seems...and there probably aren't as many Asian people or African people going to Mexico.
Is that why some lady looked at me funny today when I was out shopping today? She looked like she was afraid of me or something when I blew my nose.
I've had a sinus infection for the past week or so; I'm constantly sneezing and blowing my nose and just don't look that great in general. Nothing to worry about; I just wonder if someone is going to freak out whenever they see someone with seasonal allergies.
Oh no! Is that woman blowing her nose in public? She must have swine flu!
I've known people like that and they drive me completely up the wall! Not everything is a health crisis. Like previous posters said, many more people die of other causes than this swine flu people are freaking out about.
@redskull: Maybe, I'm not all that sure. I know a lot of the Mother Abigail people had scary crows in their dreams and maybe some encounters with Flagg; however, I'm not entirely sure the Flagg supporters had Mother Abigail in their dreams at all.
I could be totally wrong though, it's been a while since I read it.
FARK has been referring to this flu as man-bird-pig flu. A rather fitting name.
[en.wikipedia.org]
Funnier than calling it Captain Tripps.
We have enough supplies at home to last 6 months. The only downside would be meds and the eventual lack of power and internet. So I guess I would need to know who has broadband Flagg or Abigail?
And in the glass is always half full arena:
The unemployment situation could be reduced with a
global pandemic. Immediate positions funeral related industries...just not a long employment life expected...
Another down side is that the real estate market would fully crash but the salvage market for disassembling homes would break wide open...
Livingston County, Michigan reporting in here. Despite the indications on the map, no funeral pyres in sight yet. Nor have I heard anyone tolling "Bring out your dead!"
Actually, with everything Michigan is going through, a porcine-related virus seems rather "meh"... I just hope the phlem tastes like bacon.
Having visited Mexico on many occasions (Have relatives there), "Westernized" is not a word that comes to my mind. Maybe not truly Third World, yet, 2 1/2 is being generous.
@bohemian:
Flagg has Broadband, but he uses Time Warner.
Abigail uses the Att Edge network.
It's a push.
@nataku83: Or maybe I should just go back to Jalopnik because of the Pontiac situation today?
I'm getting a little heated or is that a fever coming on? No, its just late spring in Alabama and I'm too cheap to use my A/C at this point. My parents didn't get it until I was a senior in high school so I'm used to being hot anyway.
There's a much more accurate map here: [maps.google.com]
Like, there aren't 20 markers in Queens, and it can be edited by anybody. I'd like to see this link added to the original story.
@Applekid: This is what I thought of on Saturday, too. I didn't realize Brazil's impact on Madagascar closing their ports, though.
For anyone who's puzzled: [www.kongregate.com]
@xsmasher: Also, from what I've read, "regular" swine and bird flus jump from pigs or fowl to humans, but are not transmissible from humans to humans, whereas this one is. That definitely adds to the worry. On the positive side, the cases away from Mexico seem to be milder.
It's all about where it got started. This got a good foothold in Mexico, and the other areas that it first started spreading into had some connection with Mexico. Much the same as SARS, which started in China and most of the cases outside of China had strong connections to that country.
Mexico should have updated their anti-virus definitions.
Between this and the NARC-esque drug wars, Mexico's tourism industry must be having a blast.
If anyone remembers the 1976 Swine Flu Outbreak that Wasn't, I'd love to hear about it. (I wasn't around yet). I remember reading about it awhile ago - details here: [www.cdc.gov]
It led to some odd vaccine-creating policy. I wonder if the public reaction at the time was similar to what we have today?
@oneandone: I vaguely remember it. There were alternating periods of major worry followed by 'not that big a deal'. The initial fear was largely based on the unknown - that there had somehow been transmission from pig to human and who knows what this thing will do? Eventually it became clear that it wasn't a major killer and people calmed down.
@pezstar: You should write "I'm getting married next week" on them. You'd probably get a lot of knowing smiles more so than puzzled or worried looks.
I think I'm going to start using my neti pot (well, NeilMed bottle thing) after flights because I frequently get sick after flying. Never thought about the face mask.

Yay for the Stand reference!
I actually contemplate this scenario when I'm bored...
