Sweet, now I know what I can get for my new Interview suit.

Suits are just one of the things that should not be bought online. With the current sales at department stores, you can probably get a suit just as cheap in person. I know I tend to buy my suits at Macy's during clearance sales. I can get quality and know the fit is right, then have it tweaked by a tailor.

Ensure that the bubble portion of your suit allows for adaquate arm-flailing, and that your fish are of the proper size and weight for your social status.

@Segador: The biggest mistake I see repeatedly is buying the wrong size fish.

We've bought very nice wool suits at Overstock.com that fit great or rarely need a slight tayloring. Great prices and great fit!

@Chris Walters: Some people just won't accept their place in society.

I bought a suit from Amazon.com for my wedding. It was %99.99, marked down from $1300.00. It had almost a total 5 star review. It was a nice suit...I took it in for alterations and was disappointed there was nothing she could do about my chest/shoulders. The whole suit fit fine except for the fact it felt like if I raised my arms too high in the front, I'd bust the seams at the front of my shoulders. Ah well.

@Segador: I just hate it when people get into fish-waving contests, don't you?

I don't need an ill-fitting suit to look like an idiot. I can do that anytime for free.

I was surprised by the number of ill-fitting suits being worn by lawyers when I had to go to the courthouse recently. Trousers weren't hemmed and were too baggy and the jackets looked like DJ Qualls was wearing an Arnold Schwarzeneggar suit. Yet another reason to not like lawyers.

@gttim: Really? The best suit I own was bought from an eBay consignment shop. Anything you buy off the rack is going to require tailoring anyway.

@jstonemo: Remember, you're more afraid of them than they are of you.

If you are looking for a cheap suit, check out K&G, they have alot of suits for $100, a huge selection, and offer on site tailoring. I have read that the only difference between a expensive suit and a cheap one is how stain and wrinkle resistant they are.

Or if you are really cheap, check out you local thrift store.

Additional Tip: Make sure you stay off your knees when trying them on to ensure that you can exchange them if you do not like how they look with your shoes.

I'm a skinny guy with long arms, so any off the rack suit is going to look awful on me. Either it'll be way too baggy or the arms will be too short. I have the same problem with dress shirts.

The guy wearing the $4000 suit holding the elevator, COME ON!

I wear a suit every day (because I am a big important person) and my wife used to design suits for both upscale and lower tier designers. My closet includes a blazer that retails for $69 and a tuxedo that retails for $3000. Here's my advice: unless you run in very high end circles, don't ever pay more than $300 for a suit. Really cheap suits (sorry K&G guy) look like it, but there is no discernible difference between a suit that costs $250 and one that costs $900 if the fit is correct. Spend money on good shirts and great ties from high end outlets like Nordstrom Rack and Neiman's Last Call. Nothing looks cheaper than a cheap tie.

@rockasocky: The guy wearing the $600 banana suit? COME ON!

The pictured suit looks like something you'd see Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips wearing.

Also, I have a few suits that I really enjoy in my wardrobe.. then someone tried to do a drive-by on my neighbor and they returned fire poorly. I heard shots, hit the floor, and when it all calmed down there was a bullet hole in my wardrobe. Put 4 holes in my tux. Damn. (This was like 12 days ago.)

So now I need to find a new tux. Timely article, Consumerist!

The most important thing about a suit is the fit. I buy most of my suits off ebay (you just need to know your shoulder and chest measurments) and have found a good tailor. The suit I wear the most I bought for $27 and spent $40 on tailoring.

Please buy more clothes that don't quite fit right online! My significant other owns an alterations shop and can do wonders for cheap. Most garments can be altered for between $10 - $20. If you're saving up to 50% online, feel free to grab the deal and then find a reputable tailor / seamstress in your area.
