Salmonella Found In "Critical Areas" Of Pistachio Plant

3226 views

The pistachio recall has been expanded after FDA inspectors found salmonella contamination in "critical areas" of Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Calif.

The FDA says:

Initially, the firm's recall was limited to certain lots of roasted pistachios. Information from the joint FDA and California Department of Public Health inspection indicates the presence of Salmonella in critical areas of the facility and the potential for cross-contamination between raw and roasted products. After this information was shared with Setton, the firm decided to expand its recall.

Pistachios are used as an ingredient in other foods, so you'll need to check the FDA's awesome searchable database of pistachio pain.

The FDA says that consumers should not eat pistachios or food products containing them (such as pistachio bakery goods and pistachio ice cream) until they can determine that the products do not contain pistachios recalled by Setton.

BURN IT! BURN IT! ROASTED NUTS! ROASTED *sip coffee* What?

I really have to look at the bag of Setton Farms Pistachios in my cupboard, to see if it's recalled. I haven't been eating it b/c of that, so maybe if the FDA suggested a recall of all the snack food in my house, I wouldn't buy any more, but also not eat what's in my house.

Oh man, Trader Joe's Chili Lemon pistachios are on the list. I may have to weep.

user-pic

god dammit and i love pistachios SO MUCH.

user-pic

@Oligarch_GitEmSteveDave: You might as well get it over with and check them out.. I mean.. if they're not recalled you could be enjoying pistachios right now....

Or not..

Jeez, and I'm on SUCH a pistachio kick right now.
I just bought some plain roasted ones at Trader Joes...
it seems weird they're not on the recall list since the flavored ones are... I think I'll eat them anyways.

So are imported pistachios ok?

user-pic

The all-important question: How does this affect pistachio ice cream?

Costco told me last week they weren't on the recall, they are full of fail. Fortunately I stopped eating them when the first re-call happened. Still no official word from costco.

Certainly, unless they're from... No, that's a cheap shot. Forget I said anything.
Horrible joke really.
I shouldn't even have brought it up.
No excuse, really.
Apologies for wasting your time.

I love the damn things. Fact is I polished a bag of Setton Farms Garlic and Onion flavor the night before the recall was announced.

I bought a package of salmonella the other day, and it was tainted with mixed nuts and peanut butter. I guess it's hard for a guy to get a break around here.

@geekgrrl77: If you don't get sick, maybe I'll eat mine too. Ugh!

user-pic

@CharlieInSeattle: I have a bag of those, but my product number has an extra digit, a 4. Our best before date is in that range. If this is anything like the peanut recall our product number will most likely be recalled eventually, but we've been eating them for a few weeks with no ill effects.

Damn nut recalls. We love nuts.

@Ihaveasmartpuppy: It's actually not the product number that matters, it's the ITEM # 203435, which is what I have. My product number didn't match either, but I called costco, and they gave me the item number.

Just another reason that out food shouldn't be grown or processed in California.

@pecan 3.14159265: Spumoni!! I think I've eaten more spumoni this past year than I ever have. Never got sick once, though. I suppose that makes me lucky?
