NY Post Picks Up Consumerist Reader's ATM Skimming Story

8607 views

Check it out, we're in the New York Post today. They picked up our reader Dan's story about finding an ATM skimmer at a Chase/WaMu, along with the skimmer spotted by Gizmodo reader Sean after they ran Dan's story. Neat!

Doesn't that suck when paper publications steal your stories.

user-pic

You didn't even get a fun, catchy headline from the NYP. At least they could've given you that.

user-pic

Ben gets a mention. If this site becomes trendy I'm bailing. LOL

user-pic

Sucks that it's the NY Post and not a real newspaper.

user-pic

It gave me a talking pop-up of Scotts Money Blog. I can earn up to $9000 a month by posting links on google!!!!

Seeing how the New York Post is a NewsCorp publication, I guess some of the posters here will automatically assume that ATM skimmers are not a real problem and are being hyped by the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy, Big Oil, and Haliburton.

user-pic

Maybe an actual newspaper will pick up a Consumerist story before they all go under.

user-pic

Should we be concerned that they'll draw up a hateful caricature of you as a kitten being riddled with bullets? The Post taketh what the Post giveth way with alarming rapidity.
And, shouldn't Consumerist sue The Post b/c they're "sampling" your IP? Good enough for AP, good enough for CU...

@Mr.DuckSauce:
yeah I hear that why do I need a 4 year bachelor's in journalism when the people that do have one do this kind of crap?

user-pic

Hey, check it out:

Tom Kelly, a spokesman for JPMorgan Chase, in Chicago, said the bank "takes these matters very seriously"

Good to know. I was starting to think that they didn't care, and might just come up with a canned "we couldn't give a rat's sass" response.

user-pic

Who is this Ben Poken that article mentions?

user-pic

Better hope the AP doesn't hear about this. Imagine - the news media, getting their news - from the internet! Who are they going to pay for this?

user-pic

@LittleEnosBurdette:

Better yet, who are they going to sue for this...

Con Seannery '09: Illegal in 1 Giz

@Mr.DuckSauce: Wow, not even a citation to Consumerist. I'd sue, honestly.

@Con Seannery '09: Illegal in 1 Giz: THOROUGH READING FAIL! Consumerist was mentioned. They're big time, now. I knew about them before they were cool!

@HiPwr: And use FUD in an entirely incorrect context, mind you!

@The_IT_Crone: Well, that makes me feel better.

@LordofthePing: No idea, man! I think I heard about him being on NBC one time, but it kept having its time slot bumped around, so I can never remember.

user-pic

@Con Seannery '09: Illegal in 1 Giz: Err, why do you have "man sauce" ending your screen name? :P

"Media Whoring," an interesting tag to use for a site and editors who pick up >50% of their material from small and obscure sites and sources.

To be fair, Consumerist, you should tag every single one of your posts as "Media Whoring," because that's the business that you've chosen. Aww, don't be bitter, my friend.

user-pic

@I_am_Awesome: Word. In this case, Post is an acronym for piece-of-shit tabloid.

user-pic

This is funny. First of all it's not a "story" when Consumerist just posts an email from a poster. Second Consumerist has probably linked to 10,000 articles that originated in print newspapers; and you get all afluttery when the NY Post mentions you once.

@johnfrombrooklyn:

Awww... pipe down, trollies... as long as the word's getting out to folks who need to know.

O'course, the real crooks at most ATMs are the banks and the ATM owners, not the skimmers...

user-pic

@PencilSharp: I agree. Those that disagree with you should just shut up. I also agree that all bankers and ATM manufacturors are crooks. I bet I even have a similar tin foil hat as you have.

I mentioned to the teller at my local Chase branch(formerly WaMu out here in Oregon) that I didn't feel comfortable using their ATMs outside now after reading about the card skimmers and just preferred to come inside to get cash.

In response, she offered to tell me about signing up for a Chase Credit Card. Did I know if I did it right then...

I'm so done with that bank(s).

Frankly, I think they cut out the best part...when he went back to check for the camera, and told the bossman again, he said that he didn't shut the ATM down because they had never even seen one of these before, and he had no idea how to take care of this situation.
