I don't trust an 80 GB 3.5" hard drive myself. They haven't made them that low capacity for a while, and these are somewhat precision electronics, that don't age particularly well.

The 80GB drive I have in my PC has not any issues, outside of running out of space.

user-pic

@huadpe: Admittedly, I originally that as an 80GB 3.5" floppy disk and was floored by the technological leap.

user-pic

@huadpe: I have a 80gb external portable drive that is still going strong, 4 years later.

I would rather have the 80GB HDD than the other HDD that surplus computers has on sale . . . a 200GB REFURB! AHH!

I will soon be swimming in Izze...I am a happy boy. Thanks!

I had bad luck, really bad with an 80 GB Western Digital in the past. I wouldn't trust them to hold frickin' marker writing on the outside of the drive.

@SexCpotatoes: Was it THIS particular model? It can't be all WDs...mine's just fine.

Uh, about Blue Bunny ice cream, it's been known to do foul things to some people's digestive systems. Just a quick, FYI. Better pick up some Imodium AD if you're going to take advantage of that deal...

I wish I could justify needing that 23in LCD - My monitor at home is a regular 19" LCD, no widescreen.

Hmmm, perhaps I could play with the contrast/brightness and the wife would never know!

@DoubleEcho: or just unplug it
"i don't know what's wrong, it just won't turn on! but it's ok, i ordered a new one already"

@NoWireHangers: My family eats Blue Bunny all the time with no ill effects. Perhaps lactose intolerance is the issue. Ice cream can be pretty rough on that.

@pecan 3.14159265: Now that you mention it (and I grabbed the dead drive off my bookshelf), YES the WD800 is the model number of the drive I have that failed on me. The only drive I've ever had fail (and I've even still got a Packard Bell from 1999 that the 4gb HD works just fine.

This out of probably 7 computers and 3 extra hard drives purchased, the Western Digital was the only one that took a crap so far in the last decade.

user-pic

@changed my name: It does a number on my whole family. My uncle. My sisters. My grandparents. It's the only ice cream that does a number on me. It tasted great though.

food lion has blue bunny for $1.99 this weekend! combine that with a coupon and you achieve cheap eats!

@jeffs3rd: Yep, hard drive refurbs may be the biggest ripoff in the computer industry pulled off by legit companies (let's ignore the spammy components like PuRAM and companies claiming they have quantum memory already). They get a broken or dying drive working to the point that it'll get an OS installed, and it dies in less than a few months, right after the 30 day warranty expires. This goes for both internal and external drives.

I think it behooves Consumerist to make a guide as to what products are good refurbished and what products are bad refurbished. Some refurbished things are better than new, as they've been broken and fixed, and might even come with a warranty just as long as when it was new.
