Monster Cable Misuses Engadget Quote To Sell Its Crap

18406 views

If there's any blog more anti-Monster Cable than us, it's Engadget—they refuse to review any Monster Cable products because of the company's dishonest sales tactics and legal bullying. Monster either doesn't realize that (doubtful) or doesn't care, because they pulled a quote from Engadget out of context and slapped it on the home page of the Beats By Dre site in a way that implies Engadget has reviewed and approved of Monster headphones.

The quote's been pulled from the front page now, barely two hours after Engadget found out about it and posted an acceptable substitute quote that they're willing to stand behind ("Monster Cable sucks"), but we still think it's funny that Monster gave the go ahead on using an Engadget quote.

For reference, here's the text of the post they pulled the quote from:

You can't put velvet in these earcups and call 'em nice headphones! As Mr. Chappelle would likely attest, there are no better headphones in which to drop the beat into than Dr. Dre's "highly anticipated" Beats. The master of chronic himself has slapped his all-but-forgotten name onto a set of cans (which we spotted originally at CES), and is now ready to introduce 'em to the world. Starting on July 25th, the crunk-inducing headphones will be available exclusively at Apple and Best Buy (both online and in-store), though the buying experience would likely be way more gangsta if checking out at BeatsByDre.com. Still, for $349.95, we'd recommend looking at more respected names in sound, but if your street cred is sitting at rock bottom, you may have no other choice.

And here's the quote they created from it:

There are no better headphones in which to drop the beat into.

"Engadget endorses Monster Cable? Uh, hell no."

Well, their review DID say that. but lol at them for having the balls to post that on their site.

user-pic

Those headphones look phat! And nothing says "street cred" like $349.95 headphones!

user-pic

Wow for $350 bucks I could get 3.5 Monster HDMI Cables!!!

user-pic

I almost lost my drink all over my keyboard, through my nose.

Monster should have said "There are no better headphones in which to drop the beat into, yo."

The 'yo' really makes it shine. :)

user-pic

alright so check this out... yo those are blazin hot dawg...

user-pic

I actually have those headphones and love them. I did not pay retail for them though. I know someone that works at Best Buy and with his Employee discount got them for $100

user-pic

I can't think of "drop the beat" without thinking "drop the beet".

user-pic

@CuriousO: Just in case, no they are not stolen. He gave me the receipt that the manager had to sign when he checked out.

user-pic

Do they actually come with the chronic? Are they Mac compatible? These are questions that any loyal Monster Cable customer would like to know the answer to. As I don't actually know anyone that I still speak with that could be considered a loyal Monster Cable customer, I'll leave these questions to you, Consumerists com padres.

user-pic

@CuriousO: That's one of the main "beefs" with monster cable. Yes they make good products, but they charge way too much, and they sue little companies for fun. For $350 though, you can buy Bose headphones, which are lightyears ahead in quality.

The $100 you paid is probably the quality they really are. A $100 pair of headphones is going to be very nice, no matter what brand.

user-pic

I am shocked, absolutely shocked that any company would intentionally misrepresent a quote li... oh, wassat? Monster Cable?

Oh... Business as usual then, I see. Cary on.

user-pic

@PSN: kingpsyz: checkit, checkit, checkit... mic check one two, one two... aight, lissen, on the real tip, yknowhatImean, for reals... this is the solid gold standard, fort knox quality shit right here...

user-pic

See, I can do it too:

"Nice headphones! We'd recommend."

-Engadget

"Monster Cable... slapped the Beats! Engadget... gave the go ahead."

- Consumerist

user-pic

Monster removed the quote from the homepage.

user-pic

Personally with the business practices that Monster has, I won't purchase ANYTHING with their name on it. In fact I tossed out a whole bunch that I already had and replaced them with others (at a LOWER cost and no quality difference).

user-pic

@downwithmonstercable: I was going to get the Bose headphones, but you cant really find a deal on those so I chose to pay $100 and have decent headphones.

user-pic

This reminds me of that Simpson's episode where Marge calls Tom Clancy for a blurb on her book cover. We see him talking into the phone:

"Hello this is Tom Clancy. Would I say "if you're hunting for a good read this October, Marge Simpson's book is a clear and present danger to your free time?" Hell no I wouldnt! Whaddya mean I just said it. That doesn't count. Hello? Hello?"

user-pic

I can't believe Monster would take such poor grammar and throw it up as an endorsement.

"...there are no better headphones in which to drop the beat into than Dr. Dre's..."

should read

"...there are no better headphones into which to drop the beat than Dr. Dre's..."

if you want to have proper English, or

"...there are no better headphones to drop the beat into than Dr. Dre's..."

if you prefer modern American English. Of course, this ignores the meaning of "drop the beat," which is to insert a break, also known as silence. So it seems Monster and Engadget both meant to say they're the best headphones for hearing nothing.

user-pic

@WiglyWorm:
do
if(MonsterCable == True) then internet.sarcasm++
loop

user-pic

But will these be compatible with the new iPod shuffle!

user-pic

@sweetnjoe: Even Consumerist has nice things to say about Monster!

"...buy a Monster Cable based on actual qualities of the product... they're... gold-plated, high-definition... customized Bentleys."
[consumerist.com]

user-pic

Monster PRices is all they have :)

user-pic

@RoosterCockburn: "...there are no better headphones into which one would be encouraged to drop the beat other than Dr. Dre's ..."

-Dr. Dre's Fancy-Ass School Of Book 'n Shit.

user-pic

@MacQix: I can understand limiting your future purchases from Monster Cable, but throwing out your existing cables that still worked?

Man, thats just wasteful.

user-pic

@Kaellorian: And where is this school located?? I wish to enroll. That shits SLAMMIN'.

user-pic

Why would anyone buy these? At $350, you could get an awesome pair of Sennheisers. Monster Cable Sucks, but it shouldn't surprise anyone that Monster Cable would do this.

user-pic

@CuriousO: Wow, so you were considering Bose and then chose Monster?

That's like considering AIG and settling with Citibank by comparison.

Two bad, bad choices. Both equally terrible. I'm sorry.

user-pic

@CuriousO: I know - I meant that your average joe consumer could walk into Best Buy with $350 and pick up some of those monster headphones, or walk over to a Bose store and get those for the same price. But being that Bose is by far the leader in that field, it would make me assume that the Monster headphones are all hyper and not nearly the same quality - being that you were able to get them for $100. A 72% employee discount is pretty unheard of, I'd imagine there's an insane markup on those bad boys.

user-pic

$350.00?!

For that much cabbage, I could finally afford something decent to actually plug the headphones into. Right now it's my 12 year old CD and tape deck and $20 5-way AV switcher that together work as a lo-fi receiver.

You people and your money!

user-pic

More annoyed by the redundant AND dangling preposition than anything else. But maybe that's just me. :-D

user-pic

@Crabby Cakes: I don't ever wear them out on the "mean streets," but my Grado headphones cost well over $300. I'm willing to pay for amazing sound quality, but not for an endorsement by Dr. Dre.

user-pic

@nerdtalker: Bose and Monster aren't "bad, bad choices" for quality. The fact is, both produce fantastic, better than most, quality products. Now are both brands generally very overpriced? Especially when you can get better products for the same price? Absolutely.

user-pic

@RoosterCockburn: "Of course, this ignores the meaning of "drop the beat," which is to insert a break, also known as silence. So it seems Monster and Engadget both meant to say they're the best headphones for hearing nothing."

I might be totally off on this, so take it for what it's worth, but the "listen to silence" interpretation actually makes a lot of sense to me.

At $350 a pop, I'm going to assume that these are wireless headphones; that might be my first mistake. But I use headphones for my job (medical transcription) and standard plug-in headphones tend drape all over my keyboard, get pulled out of the socket if I stand up without thinking to take the headphones off, etc. After 7 years of annoyance with this, I decided to go ahead and buy cordless/wireless headphones. I got a pair that were priced in the low- to mid-range.

When the headphones are on but there's a moment of silence, the feedback/static is REALLY noticeable. A very definite, fairly loud, distracting hiss or buzz.

Now, for what *I* use them for, I couldn't care less about that - but if I were trying to listen to music that had dropped beats or silent measures, or watch a movie that had a dramatic silent pause, that static would pretty much ruin the experience.

So it COULD be that the "drop the beat" thing refers to that - that there's no static or feedback with these headphones, so you can hear even the silences perfectly, with no hum or hiss or crackle coming through.

There is no excuse on God's green earth for the grammar, though.

user-pic

@supercereal: Even the "cheap" ($75? it was almost 10 years ago) Grados are worth every penny, imo.

user-pic

@Applekid: I can't read your post without thinking "drop the soap."

It's a sickness, I know.

user-pic

@67alecto: I have gone online looking up the actual/original/full quotes for a few books because I was so certain that I'd find something like this. Like a blurb that says "This author is... awesome!" and I'd expect the original to say, "This author is unspeakably bad, and if she were to spontaneously combust, that would be awesome!"

user-pic

$350 for headphones from a crap company? Wow! They must think we are stupid consumers...Does Apple own this company? This sounds like something they would try.

user-pic

@supercereal: My bf has a pair of really expensive headphones that he loves, so I'm not begrudging the price of quality headphones, but the Dr. Dre endorsement makes me chuckle.

user-pic

I still say Consumerist should register the name MonsterDouche.com and post nothing but Monster Cable stories, and of course, sell t-shirts.

user-pic

@nerdtalker: but one is much cheaper than the other.
i'd prefer to pay less and get crap, then pay more and get the same crap

user-pic

Huh, never knew Bernard Goldberg was working on Monster Cable's site...

user-pic

I'm confused. Why is a miniature golf place selling Dr. Dre headphones?

user-pic

@Outrun1986: I'll buy anything shiny and made by Apple!

user-pic

@Outrun1986: Of course not, we all know you can't get black headphones for your iPod. [consumerist.com]

user-pic

@katstermonster: Dangling prepositions are something up with which I will not put!

user-pic

Everyone that has used "Mxnster Cable" in their posts will now be required to defend themselves in a trademark infringement case.

user-pic

@nerdtalker: I am not an audiophile, so I was just looking what I could get for what I was looking to spend. Not sure that you can give me a pair of headphones that would match what I got for $100. Not sure how you figured that Bose is a terrible brand, I had numerous of their products and they have been good.
