Mom! My "New" PSP Is Full Of Porn!
When a 6-year-old Tampa Bay boy turned on his "new" PSP from Walmart there was a little something extra included. Lots and lots of porn!
My Fox Tampa Bay says that the boy told his mother, who then called Walmart.
"I showed it to my mom, and I ran back to my room…she said I'm not in trouble," the boy told Fox.
Walmart, however, was in trouble.
"I explained the situation [to the Walmart manager] and his response was, well bring the machine down and we'll let your son pick out a new game. And I was like, no I don't think you heard what I said," Mom said in an interview.
Walmart says they're looking into the situation and are "concerned." The accidental porn viewers say they would just like an apology and to exchange the used (ew) PSP for a new one.

@Mike_Hawk: "Call me a skeptic, but this sounds a little fishy does it not?"
To me it sounds like Walmart tried to sell a returned PSP as new. I don't see what the mom gains from lying about this. All she wants is a new PSP. Which only makes sense if the one she bought was not new.
@dresden: To me, it seems like Wal-Mart sold a returned PSP as a brand new one and there was already a memory stick inside.
@Raekwon: I would not be surprised at all if there are griefers out there buying stuff like PSPs, iPods, etc, loading them full of hardcore, then returning them to the store, all for the lulz of seeing headlines like these.. If it's in the original packaging, the product almost always goes right back on the shelf without a second look.
@xAnarChisTx: Just because it happens, doesn't mean it should happen. Wal-Mart most likely sold a used PSP as a new one, and that's definitely not acceptable. The inappropriate content on it is proof of that, and the Wal-Mart manager shamelessly and casually throwing the incident off and offering a free game instead of a new PSP is deplorable.
@xAnarChisTx: Yeah, totally dude! I mean, like, seriously, technology is like the spawn of the devil. Burn the books!!

@Matthew Davis: I liked that the kid made sure he wasn't in trouble, even for something that wasn't his fault. Well-rounded kids spend a good portion of their childhood in perpetual fear of groundings and toys being taken away when they do something really wrong (I'm talking about cheating on a test, not spilling juice). When I was 6, I would be in the same frame of mind. Show mom, make sure I'm not in trouble, resume watching X-Men.
This same thing happen to me. I bought a "refurbed" computer from Fry's last summer. It was one of those reboxed from the manufacture jobs, so I thought the system would have been wiped of any traces of its previous owner. While reinstalling windows from the partition, I noticed that there was an extremely large folder that looked out of place. It was full of ripped porn movies.. Like 32 GBs worth. The sad thing is that it wasn't even good porn, lot's of gang bang type of stuff. Gross..
@Raekwon: I think it's like the people who take pictures of things while naked, so you can see their reflection. They then try to get it on mainstream sites.
The only thing worse than putting porn on something and returning it is switching hair dye bottles and returning them.
@Mike_Hawk: ...How so? We've had plenty of stories here when so-called "new" game systems/dvd players/mp3 players aren't actually new, and already have dvds/games/whatever in them.
In fact, didn't we recently have a "Buckets O' Cum" in a DVD player?
You're not a skeptic: You just don't pay attention to consumerist.com enough.
@Matthew Davis: I'm pretty sure she just removed the memory card if the boy's using the PSP. It's difficult to tell how long it will take for the investigation to run its course, and there's no reason to deny the kid his Christmas present. I think she probably just took out the memory card.
@xAnarChisTx: If they'd had sold an actual new game system, this wouldn't have happened. In fact, 99.99% of the time, the reason this kind of crap happens is because they try to pass of a used system as new.
@Matthew Davis: I can understand her outrage (though something tells me she wasn't as outraged as FOX wants everyone to believe).
This is why Walmart has a policy to absolutely *not* resell returned merchandise with memory that's not in it's original, sealed manufacturer packaging. Even at a discount. Now, if only all stores would actually follow this policy.
This is also why Walmart needs to cut the return period for video game systems from 90 days to 15 days to fall in line with their return policy for computers. Video game systems *are* computers now-a-days.
You would think by now there would be some standard protocol to follow with returned electronic devices. All it would usually take is a five step/five minute test to check the unit, and appropriately reset/reformat memory. You can still sell the return, and not have the embarrassment of crap like this happening.
Then again, I guess in the minds of many managers, who are already working with skeleton crews, five minutes of wasted productivity is just that.
Erm... They say she wants the machine exchanged and an apology right? Didn't Wal-Mart already offer to exchange it? I would have imagined that someone apologized in the process too. For those being the only things she wants, why would she need to bring the media in? I think what this lady wants more than anything is attention.
@Radi0logy: Well, I can understand a mother not wanting her young child to accidently come across HARDCORE porn.
@Mike_Hawk: What would this woman gain from this? She wants to exchange the PSP, not get a free one. Wal-mart has her money, she's just asking for the product she already paid for.
@Marc Melton: My parents have given birthday/christmas gifts that late before. She may not have had the money for it at christmastime. My brother once got a birthday gift my parents promised him about six months after his actual birthday.
@everclear75: I'm trying to think of substitute phrase for "one man's ___ is another man's poison" so I can avoid using the word "meat." It's like trying NOT to think of a polar bear - suddenly that's the only word my brain wants to throw at me.
Ahem. Anyway. This is the very reason I'm putting off buying a laptop. I want to get just a cheapy one that I can do very lightweight surfing on (no movies, no games - perhaps a YouTube video now and again). I don't want to spend a lot so I keep thinking I should just look into getting a used one, but I'm afraid of what the FBI might wind up finding on some stranger's computer after it's in my house.
@ogremustcrush: Well, the manager told her to bring the machine down and her son can pick out a new game. He didn't say he'd give her a new PSP. Apparently he said to just bring the PSP with her.
Question is, what responsibility does WalMart have. Granted in this case, it would appear that the PSP had been used, and was being sold as new, but do we know if WalMart sealed the box, or did the previous owner reseal it to make it appear as if the box had never been opened?
If Walmart (or any other store for that matter) receives a sealed box as a return, with no obvious signs of tampering, should they be required to open the box and inspect the product (meaning that the equipment would have to be sold as refurbished), or is a visual confirmation that the product is still sealed sufficient?
This is just one of the douches who are always "skeptical" that the consumer is up to something.
@Rachacha: I think if the box was taken back sealed, Wal-Mart wouldn't look twice, but if it was unsealed, they have a duty to check because it's not just the PSP in the box, there's a manual and cables and stuff, I think. So Wal-Mart has the duty to make sure everything is there, and it's not a stack of tiles.
@pecan 3.14159265: I'm not saying it's right, I just think people overreact to stuff like this. Was there evidence it was hardcore? I didn't read the article but don't want to jump to conclusions about how bad it is (shades of gray, I know)
What will a new PSP get her? Will it wipe the porn-y grime from the machine? It's just data. The new PSP will be the same as the old PSP.
This woman is just looking for a reason to whine. I think the offer of a free game is more than enough, because she can always format the memory card. She's just looking for pointless symbolic gestures.
@Radi0logy: For all we know, there was a friggin' donkey show or hot lunch or something else really perverted on there.
@pecan 3.14159265: Maybe they did? It can be easy to miss a memory stick that's INSIDE the PSP. Especially if you don't own a PSP and don't know that it doesn't come with a memory stick.

that was a freebie.
