DonateToConsumerist.com Launches With Much Fanfare And Fantastic Video

8241 views

Donatetoconsumerist.com is the place to go to stuff some bucks in our tip jar. To entice you to give, we have created a video, featuring myself and Meg in the CU TV labs discussing her need to wear a labcoat, and one of our favorite comments of all time. It ends in violence! I can't wait till the next one!

Grr the video doesnt play for some reason. I guess its blocked by the filters here. Would have been a great start to the day, watching that video. If you know what I mean.

user-pic

Will donate--Meg is a total cutie, if we get more vids of hers, that tip jar will fill up in no time!

user-pic

I am confused. Why the need for donations? Didn't the consumer union buy you out so you did not need to ask for them?

user-pic

I want a consumerist mug or something! Donating to NPR has ruined me for life in charitable donations. I deserve some sort of tchatchki in return for my hard earned cash!

(I'm only half-way serious here. It would be awesome to get consumerist swag, though)

user-pic

I feel like the lab coats should be white.

user-pic

@Yankees368: Well, they're a nonprofit now, so donations are acceptable. Also, just because they were purchased, doesn't mean the parent company has lots of extra $$ to spend on Consumerist - and anything its readers can do to help should be done.

user-pic

@Yoko Broke Up The Beatles: But blue is more aesthetically pleasing and slimming.

user-pic

....

Why waste money on another domain name (I know they're cheap, but still), why not just donate.consumerist.com?

I mean...

user-pic

@exploded: I would donate regardless of schwag, but I would also buy consumerist coffee mugs, hats, or t-shrits.

user-pic

Consumerist ... why do you offer the option to donate with a debit card? I thought that was a no no in consumerism!

user-pic

Will donate my $2 after work. :D

user-pic

@pecan 3.14159265: Nah, you need this option in case they pull some shit and you need to file a charge-back. Weren't you paying attention?

:)

user-pic

@exploded: Agreed. May I suggest a "Meg's Mug" mug? ;-)

user-pic

i can't support denim lab coats, unfortunately

user-pic

@WiglyWorm: They probably only paid for domain redirect, because it redirects to a donatefast.com page.

user-pic

@notsogreatsatan: They're a cotton-poly blend, I believe.

user-pic

@WiglyWorm: I said debit card - I thought you couldn't do a chargeback (at least not the typical method) through a debit, that you had to call the bank.

user-pic

Consumerist...where's the option to donate $2.002? I'm disappointed I can't add the .002! :-P I kid, I kid.

user-pic

Donated! (Threw in a couple of extra bucks to cover the slackers.)

user-pic

"Slow news day, huh?"
Classic.
I will definitely be donating.

Maybe a store of sorts in the future?

user-pic

Okay I donated. Happily too! I love this site and I come here every day. Thanks for putting that up!

user-pic

I will donate now, but I want a figure on what a labcoat will require me to donate. Even better is it's signed by you guys, but I want a cool labcoat.

user-pic

Might I recommend that a donation earn you some sort of special designation when posting? Maybe the right to have an animated gif avatar.. or some sort of special highlights or big name or.. I dunno W/E be creative ;)

user-pic

It has come to this: The Consumerist asking me for a credit card number online.

Any chance you guys will be taking other form such as pay-pal or wampum?

user-pic

@YoSoyHe-Man!!_GitEmSteveDave: And you should add a field for "user name" so you can have a Wall of Fame or a Post of Thanks.

user-pic

@pecan 3.14159265: Blue is slimming? Well then I must be much fatter than I look...

user-pic

Dang, I already put all my money into the guvmint's toxic assets. :(

user-pic

@Thaddeus: What is this madness? Someone's asking for Consumerist to use Paypal?

user-pic

Soliciting donations? Consumer Union generates nearly $200m in revenue each year through magazine/web subscriptions, pays its top executives between $300k and $500k.

user-pic

@Thaddeus: I believe Meg gave out an address in the original announcement to send checks or cheques.

[consumerist.com]

user-pic

@joos: ...and they also take donations, like many non-profs, of which we are one.

user-pic

@SittingOnTheColbert_GitEmSteveDave: Yay. According to Ben and Meg, I, their friend, have just rocked their world!

user-pic

My Consumerist donation matches my NPR donation. Both are a daily source of news and information, and I couldn't do without them. I'm happy to contribute.

user-pic

Love this site. Donation made.

user-pic

Ya, SO? I also donate to CU because it's well worth it. Using their recommendations has saved me uncounted bucks and headaches over the years.

user-pic

@pkoutoul: It would be nice to at least get a little "I Donated!" emblem next to my name. That would keep the fact that donations are possible in front of new readers, who might not otherwise know.

user-pic

@Eric Hwang: Agreed. How much do we have to donate for a date with Meg?

user-pic

How much would we have to donate not to be pestered with regular donation pleas? Like how NPR works its pledge drive/threat.

I'd also be willing to donate to avoid having to rifle through posts about consumerist appearances and references in other outlets.

user-pic

@exploded: A shirt, hat, or something would be great to let people know you're not taking any crap from customer service. A labcoat could be nice too. Someone may donate extra for Meg's labcoat.

user-pic

@exploded: That's a good idea too. Lots of forums do that sort of thing.

I still want a Meg's mug mug though. Just sayin'...

user-pic

@Ben Popken:

Ahh...but, unlike most non-profits, consumer union has a revenue model and pays its chief executive about 3 times the average for pay for a non-profit CEO.

user-pic

@Ben Popken:
Don't get me wrong - I appreciate the work that this site does (especially you) - I just think that CU has chosen a peculiar course by buying a for-profit blog, replacing all ads with its own and then asking its users to donate money.

user-pic

@joos:
If it keeps Consumerist running and off the chopping block it is worth it. It is a valuable service that we all use.
If you don't want to donate then don't. I somehow doubt that anyone working on this site is seeing any of those high salaries.

user-pic

@pecan 3.14159265: Despite the cheapness of them he was really questioning why spend money on another domain name. Not hosting too.

user-pic

@pkoutoul: Oh, better yet: A mug with a picture of Meg holding the mug, so it's Meg's Mug's Mug Mug.

user-pic

Donated. :) Can't do without my daily fix.
