What Do Deal Site Acronyms Like "YMMV" And "AC" Mean?

21273 views

If you're new to hunting for deals online, you'll start seeing all these funky acronyms used as shorthand. Here's some of the most common ones and what they mean:

YMMV - Your Mileage May Vary. (Means the deal could just be specific to one store, a region, or the manager's whim)
BOGO - Buy one, get one free
S&H - Shipping and handling charge
FSH - Free shipping and handling
FS - Free shipping
B&M - Brick and Mortar (The physical store, usually used to mean the deal is in-store only)
AC - After Coupon (Price after coupon is applied)
AR - After Rebate (Price after rebate is received)
Price Mistake, Price Error - Posted price is a retailer error and it's likely orders will be canceled, but hey, dare to dream! (YMMV).
MIR - Mail-In Rebate
NIB - New In Box
BNIB - Brand New In Box
NWT - New With Tags
NOS - New Old Stock - stuff that was made a while back but has never been used.
OOS - Out of stock
OEM - "Original Equipment Manufacturer" - unit not originally intended for retail sale, may come without manuals, cables, instructions, or in a retail box.
B-Stock - Factory refurbished and tested

Let us know in the comments if we missed any. (Photo: funny strange or funny ha ha)

NOS - New Old Stock

BBRTOW: Best Buy; Run The Other Way!

ok. i get all these. what i don't get is how the hell to keep the kitteh on the side of the keyboard (like in the photo) instead of on top of it.

user-pic

This is like the eBay training school. Every once in a while, you get thrown an acronym that throws you for a loop.

user-pic

OEM - can refer to product shipping without manuals, cables, instructions, retail box, etc...

@mac-phisto:
I have two theories on that.
1.) High powered rifle and a tranquilizer dart
2.) Hammer, shot of tequilla, and a rubber chicken.

Not incredibly relevant, except for those househunting online:

BA - Bathroom (toilet+sink+tub/shower)
1/2 BA - Half-bathroom (toilet+sink)
BR - Bedroom
MBR - Master Bedroom (a bit bigger than normal BRs)
TLC - Tender Loving Care (budget for major repairs)
CHA - Central Heating and Air (ductwork is involved)
CA - Central Air
CWS - City Water & Sewer
CW - City Water (septic tank in use or required)
LR - Living Room
DR - Dining Room (usually separate from kitchen)
SR - Sunroom (either picture windows or large skylight)

@mac-phisto: Canned air works as well as a spritz bottle with no harm to the laptop. I've used it for training two cats, including staying off the keyboard.

user-pic

So what about "this other junk"?

user-pic

What about DATY and GFE? I saw those before and couldn't decipher them.

user-pic

@craigkay: I didn't know what these were either, so I googled them......I don't think that they apply here unless you have some consumer issue in Nevada.

user-pic

@craigkay: where exactly are you shopping online?!?

user-pic

B-Stock: factory refurbished and tested

user-pic

If this works, it will possibly be the best advice I have received yet!

user-pic

The only time I ever see those is when I see house listings in the newspaper where print space is expensive. House listings online use full descriptions because they can and they know that a lot of people don't automatically know what CHA means.

user-pic

But you might pick up a few dates using that acronym.

user-pic

BOGO is a good one to have.

I've never seen B-Stock used. I've seen RFB for refurb. And I hate when people post those deals and don't spell it out - I always feel bait switched.

user-pic

@undefined:

some other fun ones:

RCG, mish, CHJ, pops, gr33k.

user-pic

I was taught the lesson of "retail" and "OEM" by a friend when ordering from NewEgg. It sometimes doesn't matter, as I usually read the descriptions to see what's included, but it usually doesn't effect my decision to buy.

user-pic

@squinko: I anal as well, but I don't often proclaim it on the internet.

user-pic

@mac-phisto: Place a small, asthmatic infant next to your keyboard, face up.

user-pic

SOL- Shit Out of Luck...Like sellers on eBay who don't get paid...

user-pic

PM- Price Match

Worst Buy- a commonly used term for the business formally named Best Buy, because of their tactics for charging more for the same item that you can purchase online, because of unknowing customers.

Wally World- I think this means Wal Mart. Dunno where it came from though.

user-pic

OEM- Does not come with retail packaging, such as a box, but does contain the exact same physical product.

user-pic

NRFB = Never Removed From Box.

Important if you're a collector. Or if you just love Dexter.

user-pic

BTIBNE = Bathroom Tiles In Box Not Electronics

user-pic

Also, don't forget the most important one:

NSFW: Not Safe For Work. (used as a Forewarning for any website or Page that would potentially get you sent to HR or worse get you fired if you visited it from work.)

user-pic

BB - Best Buy
CC - Circuit City
TRU - Toys R Us
GS - Gamestop
CML - Check my list
B2G1 - Buy 2 Get 1
IR - Instant Rebate
SER - Staples Easy Rebate

@Raekwon: Be careful with "OEM" software and Operating Systems. The licensing restrictions will likely be different for OEM. For example, Windows XP OEM must be sold along with computer hardware and is only licensed to be used with one computer and cannot be transferred. Windows XP Retail can only be installed on one computer at a time, but can be transferred.

user-pic

THANKYOU! I've been wondering what the hell YMMV means for years!

user-pic

@Ayo: Am I the only one who's never ever seen this used (and has in fact seen another term for a refurb)?

user-pic

@squinko: Whoa.
Until this day, I thought that people who used that acronym were advertising their preferred sexual role.
Though, it will make my internet browsing a bit less voyeuristically titillating. Damn.

user-pic

@Customer_Service_Slave: Because the mental picture of a Wally is some overweight dude in a polyester shirt with thick glasses that are taped together who's outraged at being asked to show his receipt at the door, yet thinks simulated drowning is an "enhanced interrogation technique"?
That's my guess, anyway.
