Denny's Still Mad Busy After Free Breakfast Promo Ends
I went into a Denny's Sunday and was shocked to see every single seat taken up by customers, from the booths to the counter to this annex room with tables. "Ever since they ran that free Grand Slam thing it's been like this," said hostess Krysal. "They're bringing the business back." Even after the free day was over last Tueday?
"Yep," she said, then went to go check on our table for us and came back to report it needed bussing. "Phew," she said, resting at the podium, "I get a break." When we finished our food and went up to pay for it, they had the table cleaned and seated with new people before we even got to the register.
Looks like that SuperBowl spot paid off, but for how long? Having checked out Denny's once in response to a puppet banana and free breakfast offer, will they return?

@Papercutninja: we actually have a few. I know of 2 right off the back, Brick NJ and near Woodbridge NJ
or it might be that people who are experiencing hard times had their memories jogged to the existence of Denny's.
Its a 'sit-down' restaurant with the prices of McD's, with a different stigma.
Who-ever came up with this campaign should get a nice pat on the back, great idea that is paying off in spades.
Maybe I will go to Denny's and try some of their food.
@alexcassidy: This could be a disaster for stoners if the rush continues on into the late night. Will noooooooobody think of the stooooooners?
I have no problem going to Denny's if someone came with me, as I never go out to a restaurant by myself.
That being said, whenever I think of Denny's, I think of the guy who thought he injected an air bubble into his veins, and tried to cut his arm off with a butterknife he took from a fellow patron's table at Denny's. When that didn't work, he got a knife from the kitchen and tried again. Police later Tazed him and brought him to the hospital. He survived. So if I do go, I'm hiding my butterknife if I think someone is tweaking.
@Witold Witkowski: Country fried steak, eggs over easy, hashbrowns smothered and covered...
I enjoy Denny's from time to time. It's simple comfort food. I try to support our local diners also, but their quality is falling rapidly. They all serve the same Sysco pre-made garbage. Not that Denny's doesn't, but Denny's seems to have higher quality control.
Ah memories, my grandma used to take me to Denny's as a kid, later in high-school it was a great late-night destination. But now I live by two or three high-quality, locally owned cafes where the prices can't be beat for the portions that you get, I haven't been to a Denny's in years, though I drive by one all the time.
@sicknick: Well well, we all can't be fancy lads like yourself.
A cheap diner meal and a brainless comedy. The nerve of some people! You're right, we Americans are fancy folks and should only partake of the highest brow entertainment and cuisine cooked by the world's finest chefs!
Grow up.
@tcp100: Hey, some of us only aspire to Denny's. We're stuck in the drive-through asking for extra packets of ketchup.
I like Denny's. It's decent food, at a cheap price. That being said, I seldom eat there. It's become one of those, 9:30PMJustGotBackInTownAndWeHaven'tEatenDinnerYetSoScrewItLet'sHitDenny's kind of places for me. I blame my wife, who'd rather go to one of those "breakfast" joints that keep popping up. The one's that serve healthy alternatives, like egg-white omlettes. Only, you wind up ordering the same bad-for-you crap that you'd get at Denny's, it tastes the same, but costs twice as much.
@ApologeticBale_GitEmSteveDave:
i always think of the Denny's somewhere down south that refused to serve a table of African Americans. Turns out this was a bad choice, as they were a table of African-American FBI agents who i'm sure didn't take kindly to being refused service.
@JGKojak: The ad got me in a Denny's for the first time in about 15 years-- not for the free promotion, it's just not a place i usually think to go. Food was ok but the service was terrible, and it may be another 15 years before i go back. Waitress got a 10% tip, and my girlfriend thought that was too much.
@sicknick: And proven that there are still elites among us who don't enjoy a quick meal on the cheap and a funny mindless movie.
Just because I eat at Denny's once a year or watch a mindless movie (haven't seen it, but will probably watch it once it trickles down to some cable channel) doesn't make me, or anyone else, for that matter, an idiot.
@sicknick: so, one of two conclusions can be ascertained by your post. either you: A) frequent denny's, which explains your knowledge of their clientele, making you a "mouthbreathing moron", or
B) you don't frequent denny's & don't really know anything about their clientele, & therefore are speaking out of your ass.
so, which is it? mouthbreather or assbreather? we're all dying to find out.
Just what is "the Denny's type"? I didn't know only certain types of people ate there.
I miss our local Denny's. Ours closed down about 6 months ago. Granted, my friends and I only went during the bar rush (we were usually the sober ones laughing at all the drunks), and we always had a good time.
Their Chicken Ranch thing was my favorite, and I loved their fries. They also had the best ranch dressing I'd ever had. I may have low standards, but darn it, it was good in my opinion!
@Corporate-Shill: Yum and WH together... that is the sign, the world is coming to an end. WH is nastier than eating out of a garbage dump.
@sicknick: Oh please. I can hire a private chef for my anniversary and still love my IHOP. I'm sure I'd love Denny's but I don't know where one is. And after I read "Middlemarch" I shall go read "The Duchess's Bodice" or whatever the latest romance novel on the rack at the drugstore.
I only breathe through my mouth when I have a cold. :P
@ApologeticBale_GitEmSteveDave: Dude, going to restaurants by yourself is the best! I love taking myself out to lunch with a good book ... or a stack of grading, if necessary. It's one of my favorite things.
@Andrew McCloskey Aka ATM:
Wasn't that like, over 10 years ago?
Back then, they 'took it seriously' for real. :3
There used to be a Denny's on the Somerville Circle in NJ too - it was where my parents would always take my brother and I when we were kids to celebrate birthdays or the last day of the school year.
It closed when they redid the circle - the building has been boarded up for the last 10 years or so.

Huh. I never would have thought those things worked, but I guess the publicity was good.
