New Pick-Up Truck Crash Test Videos! “Full-sized pickup trucks are marketed as tough machines, though new tests from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) shows that crash-test protection varies widely. The latest IIHS test data reveal side-impact protection is Marginal or Poor for the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Dodge Ram 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, and Nissan Titan.” [Consumer Reports] [Videos]

Have they tried a test where they’ve added 2 x 4 boards to the front and rear ends, like some Southern-state truck owners might be inclined to do?
@MalcoveMagnesia: Or add 200 pounds of bricks or wood planks to the back and watch physics in action. As much as I’d hate to be in a serious car accident, I can’t imagine being in one with an unpredictable heavy load in the bed of a pickup, ready to crash through the back of the cab during sudden deceleration. Yaaay.
Can’t speak for the new models, but I’ll vouch for the 1998 Ranger XLT. Totaled mine on the freeway two weeks ago and walked away without a scratch. (We had black ice on the roads here.)
I wonder if Chevy will use this in the news ads about how their trucks are more manly because they allow men to feel real pain.
