Wal-Mart Taunts you with 200% Sale
that product you wanted? It was only one dollar. Back in the past. When you didn't buy it. Are you ashamed? Do you harbor rage against it? Does it keep you up at night? Don't let it get in your heads, Consumerists, or you're letting the Wal-Mart win! Fight back, Consumers! Fight back against their mind games, and their awkward notion of sales, in one fell swoop; shop elsewhere. Thanks, Bryan!

@ekzachtly: Nope 200% sale price is right. Try multiplying it out.
Also since it is so freaking blurry you can't tell what it says. It looks like the top price was a certain quantity and the bottom price for another quantity. It may be an actual sale.
@crazydavythe1st: lol negative 100% off...that's brilliant! You, my friend, have a career in marketing.
@audemars: Because they hate America. Wal-Mart destroys small business and I'm proud to have not been in one in over 7 years.
@zaka:
Target sucks. Their return policy is horrible. I don't shop at either one on a regular basis, but I'd go to Wally World before friggin' Target.
I don't get what's the problem here... Are stores not allowed to raise prices? If gas prices go up, are you going to ask, "Why do people still purchase gasoline?"
Obviously not a smart move by Walmart by leaving what the previous price tag is, but honestly nothing to see here folks. The $1 could've been the special sale price. Who knows and who cares. The item is now $2.00 and it's not like they're tricking you that it's $1...
@audemars: Because their low prices allow them to buy more than they otherwise could at the stores which they shopped at before Wal Mart.
Flame and complain t.all you want, but Wally World is my first (and usually LAST) stop! Maybe its because I dont know anyone personally with a small business, but as a consumer I cant bring myself to pay more for the same thing from another retailer.
Honestly I think it is a generational thing. My parents are much more "loyal customers" but you have to earn my business. Price doesnt always win either. I recognize exceptional service. But considering Walmart has the lowest prices, is the most convenient, and has the most diverse products, its hard to look any further.
@audemars: For many communities, it's the only real choice. The department store and hardware store downtown have closed, now that Wal-Mart is here.
I think it's just a typo'd sign. The wording is awkward - "Was $1. Now for $2" Usually when stores use the word "for" they are using it when talking about several items for a certain price, i.e. "3 for $2." When they are talking about a single item, they just state the price unless there's a verb preceding it in a sentence somewhere, i.e. "get this shirt for $2". The never put "For $X" all by itself.
My guess it was supposed to be something like "Was $1. Now 3 for $2", and for whatever reason the 3 was never printed. After all, why in the world would a store want to advertise that the prices have gone up, especially a store that focuses on the discounts it offers?
@audemars: I was so pissed with myself. I hadn't been in a wal*mart in over 7 years until this past fall. Now I have been in 3 times. But I only bought 1 thing each time. Day pass to my local outdoor state run shooting range. The store makes no money on that, and they have to have a cashier manning that station that has had extra training.
@tbax929: Odd, I have never had a problem with Target's return policy. Maybe because I buy as little as I can get away with and make sure that I want it before I buy it. I can usually get electronics cheaper at Costco than Target, and Costco has the best return policy in the known universe.
@audemars: Unfortunately for some of us, the difference between spending $20 on groceries and $40 on the same groceries at a different store like Publix or Winn-Dixie (which recently made itself INTO a faux-publix) is important.
I *hate* doing it, but I can't afford otherwise.
@tbax929: What is so horrible about the policy for general use? Reciept = return, no muss, no fuss.
Or do you not keep your reciepts, even thought you're supposed to be doing so for various reasons, the least of which is backing yourself up in audits?
@audemars:
Question - "Why do people *still* shop at Wal-Mart?"
Answer - While I cannot speak for anyone other than myself and my family, I continue to be a patron at Wal-Mart and Sam's Club for a number of reasons, many of which will likely upset you.
a) Overall cheaper prices on the products and services I require
b) Location is close to home, especially now that I moved to the next town over
c) Product quality, despite what I see plastered online, is better than sub-par. Overall, I'm quite pleased
For years I've gotten diapers, wipes, and baby formula at Sam's to save on the expense of raising my two children. Whenever I've needed 'food in bulk' I've gone to Sam's for the pratical purpose it provides - meals overall on the time extended out over a period of time. My primary staple items like milk and juice can be purchased here at a discount as well. On my way out, on average I can save $.10 - $.15 a gallon on gas so I generally opt to fill up. I don't make special trips there, I'm already going.
Wal-Mart fills the void for everything else. Honestly, I don't see myself going anywhere else. I respect the opinion you are free to express, however.
@Sam Wille: Better put that I ever could have. I prefer not to kid myself into thinking that I'm all high and mighty by shopping at a more "Consumerist-friendly" store. Why spend more money on the same exact items elsewhere? Those savings add up to a substantial amount year after year.
It might massage your ego, but you probably won't hurt Wal-Mart's bottom line by refusing to shop there anymore.
@supercereal: I don't know if it is truly 'massaging people's egos' or what have you. I do know that I shop there and I save money. That money goes towards paying down my debt. The money left over after paying my debts gets saved.
It is simple, really.
@Stretch31: The Samll business angle isnt the real reason to not to shop at Wal MArt - Wal MArts business policys ARE - they will allow their pharmacist who has a religious objection to birth control NOT SELL IT TO YOU - they also have been known for years to not promote women to management positions in stores nation wide while also having amny employees work less than 40 hours so Wlamart doenst have to pay benefits but then their workes go use other social programs so the tax payer is on the hook for their benefits- They are a social blight and until they change these basic policies i'll take my business to a store the respects me and the workers ( and this doenst have to be a mom and pop)

200% sale?? If it was $1 and is now $2, doesn't that make it a "-100% off sale"?
