Sprint will cut a total of 8,000 jobs by March 31st, says CEO Dan Hesse, who enjoys being filmed in black and white as he takes long walks toward cameras. Sprint is also suspending its 401(k) match program, tuition reimbursement program, and is freezing salaries. [CNNMoney]

This is a test using rich text formatting and html links. It's the generic "company" ad that should appear on all posts with the Company category if they don't have an ad attached to a specific company.

We knew it would happen sooner or later. That's a major chunk of workers from that operation too.

I can't wait to see the ad for "What if accountants ran the world?"

user-pic

What, no "retention" bonuses for the same assholes who dragged the company down in the first place?

user-pic

if sprints "customer service" didn't suck so much, maybe they would have this thing called "customer retention" which might lead to "reoccurring income" and that would mean the company would be "solvent" and wouldn't have to do "cutbacks" that would add 8K people to the "unemployment pool" then be the next in line for a "government bailout".

Did I use enough buzz words? :-)

@Ash78: It depends on which accountants you get. I'd hope it'd be modeled after a scene from Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. An accountant hits an exec (who is tied up and haning upside down) with a golf club while screaming at them about how they are overpaid and their decisions to skim on customer service and treat their employees like disposable parts to improve stock prices short-term will kill the company long-term.

@zentex: You forgot about utilizing the Synergies to collaborate on creating a new Paradigm of communication.

user-pic

@BlackMage is doing the Time Warp agaaaaaaain!!!: The assholes who dragged this company down were the executives who decided to buy Nextel, who have since resigned.

user-pic

The 401k match elemination has been done by most employers now so that's not a big deal.

The layoffs are to be expected again most employers

And frozen salaries are to be expected as well.

Welcome to a recession.

Ironically our dollar is very strong so you can travel abroad again :)

It appears that Sprint is close to the end. I was planning on getting a Palm Pre when it comes out, but that device is supposed to be a Sprint exclusive. Currently I have Verizon, but I was willing to give Sprint my business. Hopefully the world GSM version will be modified to work on ATT if Sprint goes under.

@HIV 2 Elway Resurrected: And by since resigned I mean in the fall of 2007.

user-pic

@QuantumRiff: Neither of you are conceptualizing the win-win generated from this rightsizing.

user-pic

So ... why did a long-time, solid wireline phone company choose to sell its wireline assets and merge with a smaller wireless company when the industry was quickly revealing itself as one that would be dominated by two huge carriers?

Nice way to flush a strong brand down the toilet, guys.

user-pic

How does Sprint even have 8000 employees left? What do they do? Certainly they don't answer phone calls or work on account issues.

user-pic

So happy I finagled a contract with them for two free blackberries. In a few months, the company will die off, I'm out of contract sooner, no ETF, and go to AT&T.

user-pic

@oneliketadow: Exactly- I am thinking they might mean those people who take up space in the brick and mortar stores. They certainly won't get rid of the indian call centers.

user-pic

This is business as usual for Sprint headquartered here in Kansas City.

It's common knowledge locally that if you take a job with Sprint, its going to be temporary.

user-pic

I mourn for Sprint’s demise, but only because I’ll be sorry to lose the excellent coverage that I get. When visiting my parents in rural Texas, Verizon and AT&T phones have virtually no signal, but my Sprint phone has four bars and great reception.

user-pic

@Skankingmike: The dollar isn't strong. Everything else has just gotten weaker.

user-pic

@SoLovelyDarling: You can already get out of the ETF. They raised their monthly service charge Jan 1. Better hurry.

It'll be tough using those Blackberries anywhere else.

user-pic

@oneliketadow: Call center workers are not their emmployees...

Outsourcing gogo!

user-pic

@oneliketadow:

Sprint is more than just a mobile telephone company. They are an international ISP with assets all over the world. Sprint might still have some local telephone assets in the South (that info is dated).

user-pic

@ClutchDude: Hence a stronger dollar.

I personally would like all my payments in bullets for the upcoming 1970's New York Apocalypse. ;)

user-pic

@wdcr0ck: If you come across at all as "customer friendly" while working with Sprint, you won't last long. I bailed on them four months ago and it was one of the best things I ever did.

user-pic

@AstroPig7: Same here. I've had signal in some of the most out of the way places in Texas. It's why I hang on to Sprint and have been with them since 2000. I've only recently been looking at other companies because I want no-contract, pay-as-you-need and Sprint doesn't do that. I've not been happy looking at the coverage areas for everyone else!

@synergy:

Sprint has one, it's called Boost Mobile. Virgin also uses Sprint's network.
