No More Free FICO Scores For WaMu Customers After March 9
It looks like after March 1, 2009 quondam Washington Mutual cum Chase customers won't be able to get their FICO scores for free anymore through their bank. Those people in the picture look pretty excited about yet another WaMu feature being taken away. Woohoo, indeed. [Chase] (Thanks to Luke!)

@chemmy: Is it legitimate? I am afraid that if I give them my SSN and DOB that someone on the other side of the world is suddenly using my name to get credit.
@Justin Barbieri: no, you can check it for a FEE. I'm gonna miss my Wamu Credit card account...time to find something else.
lol this is one of the only reasons I had my WAMU account. Next I'll get a message saying "Although WAMU qualified you as an appreciated long time customer and offered you 1% cash back on all your transactions, we've now rescinded that and increased your interest rate."
"But... you can lower your interest rate by signing up for an additional Chase We-fawkin-took-over-your-bank-haha-mofo card with a small annual fee!"
Freakin shmucks. I do like havin a gazillion ATM locations with Chase and they have a cool ATM system (the interface) but come on guys... taking away features WAMU customers used? What's the point, lose all of the customers you inherited? Ejits...
How often do you *really* need to know your FICO score? I mean, not that a reduction in features is something I'd be happy about, but I'd only check it myself if I were planning a major purchase. Most of the time, I'd rather make sound financial decisions because they're smart things to do, not make my decisions based on what will add or subtract a few points from that number.
I'll give Chase a little credit that they at least acknowledged the issue and reminded people to check it before the last day it'd be available, rather than hoping nobody would notice it was gone.
All in all, not ideal, but I've gone my whole life without having constant access to my FICO score and I feel pretty okay about that still.
I just paid off my last $2500 to WaMu too. I liked taking advantage of their 0% balance transfers. I was going to keep the card just for the FICO score... I guess now I'll be closing my account.
@Repique: It's fun to watch it go up, if nothing else. I used to have a sub-600 FICO score and I'm happy with myself whenever I see it bump up 10 points or so every month.
@nikkimarie918: Yep, I have used it without any problems. However, it only is the score from one of the bureaus (I don't remember which one). So therefore it could be off by a bit.
@lawnmowerdeth: me too - I don't even know what I used the card for, but I've only kept it open to check my score. Actually, I think this used to be a Providian card, then they got eaten by WaMu, now they are getting eaten by Chase.... When will it end?
@hovy: That second part is pretty standard. Citi prevents it as well. It's usually because if Chase or Citi has a promotion like "0% interest on balance transfers", you can just keep rotating the balance and never pay any interest. I've never seen a bank that actually allows you to transfer your balance to another card from the same bank.
@PSUSkier: Transunion IIRC.
However, I emptied my credit card, paid down my car debt and my score only went up one point. What a load of crock :(
Crap!!! I love this feature. Over 2 years, I have been able to track my credit score (albeit from only one agency) and see how financial decisions have affected my rating. It was always a nice way to gauge how opening a dell account hit my credit score, or how closing one of my old revolving accounts affected it.
This is fucking bullshit Chase!!!
@Justin Barbieri: Any other way to get a genuine FICO will cost you money. All of those credit monitoring services give you fake scores, not real FICO.
@katknits: This is one of the best features on my Providian-Washington Mutual-Chase Democratic Party Visa card! What will go next?
@PSUSkier: Well, the Providian-WaMu-Chase only gives a Transunion score, so I guess it might we worth a try when they get rid of it.
Ugh ... I LOVED this feature of my WaMu credit card -- it's half the reason I got it! Having my score staring me in the face everytime I logged on was reason enough to handle my finances better, and my now 800+ credit score agrees. Also, my only other credit card is a Chase card, and I don't like the idea of having all my credit cards with the same company. I guess I'm stuck with it until a bigger bank buys Chase.
WaMu provided the "Bankcard Industry Option FICO score", not the classic FICO score. Bankcard FICO score ranges from 250 to 900. Classic FICO goes from 300 to 850. See:
