Like To Wear A Suit And Sunglasses? FBI Hiring 2950 New People
In its largest ever hiring spree since 9/11, the FBI is hiring 850 new special agents and 2,100 professional support personnel. Maybe they'll catch all those shady mortgage crooksters before they Jenga the system! Oh wait, too late. Next time there's a sub-prime meltdown, though, we'll be ready! [FBIjobs.gov] [CNN]

@12-Inch Idongivafuck Sandwich:
Then better prepare yourself in running, pushups, and situps, lots of patience, and law, military, finance, engineering, or physical science experience! And make sure you have a masters so you get a decent salary :)
We (yes, we, but that's as far as I'll go regarding my employment) are hiring almost 3,000. The 850 are special agents, but there is also a hiring blitz for nearly 2,100 support personnel. There is a lot of information available at [www.fbijobs.gov.]
@triscuitbiscuit: I'm ok with the workout stuff (although I'm currently a bit too out of shape for the special agent requirements, I'm working on that though)...but have a masters with finance experience and qualify for everything else...
@kman13: Yeah, it appears they'd be willing to pay me half what I'm making now, since I don't have a PhD... I think not.
@kman13: I thought the requirements for working for the government were you had to be undereducated and overpaid?
@SabreDC: You won't tell us who you work for, then you post a link to your company website. Then you wonder why the general population doesn't trust the feds to keep secrets ;)
@banmojo: you know, at one time i felt the same way & after some research, i realized that the first 2 are really not much more than pencil pushers these days. being an analyst at langley is completely over-glorified by movies, books & tv & the computer nerds over at NSA are busy listening to everyone's phone calls these days. i can't imagine that's very fun.
i always wanted to perform those brilliant FBI scenes in movies where you walk into a local police station & tell chief wiggum to go get you a cup of coffee. i suppose that's supposed to make us hate their arrogance, but i always just loved the idea of having a police chief as a personal servant.
@aaron8301: Seriously! I hope that was just very dry humor. For that matter, there is no reason, especially in this context, to even hint at you working for anybody in particular. Could have just said "they."
That touches on what scares me about working for federal law enforcement. It seems to be like some kind of ivory tower for d-bags. I'm willing to work relentlessly with every fiber of talent I have as long as the employer holds up their end of the bargain and puts my work to good use. The no-questions-asked loyalty the FBI asks for is something I could never live with as long as it meant trusting d-bags.
Not to say OP is a d-bag - I'm pretty sure that was dry humor. But if OP was seriously trying to be subtle about working for the FBI...my theory is validated.
@corinthos: I think you should go to cia.gov.
CIA Position Available: Spook.
Responsibilities include espionage, lying, sleeping with loose women for information, living in 007's shadow and being ousted by the VP's chief of staff. Must be willing to travel and conduct light tourture.
Please, no recruiters.
CIA, a Few Good Spooks
@Wormfather is Wormfather: I am good with loose women and torture. Maybe a career change is in order.
@sporesdeezeez: Not dry humor. It's my job. I hate how the FBI and the government in general gets this horrible rap... why lie about it? Why try and be sneaky and subtle? Isn't that what people like you dislike about the government?
I'll be completely honest. And, I know this will scare you even more... but I love my job. Of course, it would be easier for you to complain and be afraid of the big bad government than to get out and do something and try to make a difference. My branch has raised tens of thousands of dollars for charity this year (CFC). We hold several blood drives throughout the year that goes directly to the military. If that is being "a d-bag", then I confess to being one.
And of course, it's far easier for you to just call people names than to have a constructive discussion.
@CyrusOpeth: FBIJobs looks pretty bad on Firefox too. It uses Quickhire, a product from Monster.com (also used by usajobs.gov, however that version is much better).
@geoffhazel: Pretty much. But most of that research into those years is just for verification that you attended such-and-such school at the time you said. Not really to check records of behavior or academics. Those checks usually only go back about 5-7 years from the time of application.
@12-Inch Idongivafuck Sandwich: Apparently you "only" need to spend 10yrs in the FBI to qualify as a Special Agent if you are hired for anything else. The FBI is also training everyone in Suicide Prevention due to the recession. They are afraid that people are going to kill themselves during these rough times.
@CyrusOpeth: [jobs1.quickhire.com]
Sounds like they're trying to install a trojan so they can spy on you... Wonder how many people clicked the link so far...
@BustangBetty:
No you don't...
You just have to be between 23 and 37 (The average age is 30) and have one of their critical skills... If I have my Masters in MechE and I worked at a company for a few years, then I am good to apply.
@geoffhazel: Gah! I knew I shouldn't have pulled the chair out from under that kid during the school play!
@hewhoroams: 6-8 months? That's a pretty fast estimate. :-) You forgot to add the physical fitness exams. But that is only for agents.
The interview process for support is usually 2-3 sit down interviews, urine test, polygraph, etc.
Both include background investigations, which is the "government-style delays" you mention. They don't just sit back and wait 6-8 months, they are actually out interviewing former roommates, neighbors, teachers, coworkers, etc. which you reported on your SF-86 when you apply.
If you hear back in 8 months, you're lucky. The average is closer to 12-15 months. Even longer if you had any foreign travel or moved a lot.
@kman13: And have a totally crime free life - no pot smoking! Not ever! And a lot of good references. I think a lot of otherwise bright and interested people are excluded becuase of certain aspects of the college student lifestyle.
@SabreDC: You can still apply, but it wrecks your chances. Or maybe they're casting a wider net for candidates now... but a year ago, a friend of mine got dumped out because of 1-time experimentation with marijuana. Not only did it trigger his asthma, but caused the FBI years later to rescind a job offer.
Other branches of govt don't care as much, and there are a lot of interesting jobs. Most agencies are in a hiring freeze now, but there's still quite a lot availible. usajobs.gov is a good place to start.
/ happy fed govt employee. Glad to hear there are others here :-)
@SabreDC: If I was gonna pick an intelligence agency to hate on, the FBI would not be it. I mean, sure, they're not perfect, but they come off like Mr. Rogers compared to the horrific things that the CIA and the NSA have done during this administration.
Now, if I had to pick /three/ intelligence agencies...
The FBI's jobsite is down.
One of the dead links ([jobs1.quickhire.com]) shows POWERED BY QUICKHIRE in the title bar. A quick google shows the main quickhire sites for all other US government agencies (example: [jobs1.quickhire.com]) redirect you to usajobs.com.
So for now, just go to [jobsearch.usajobs.gov], key in FBI in the keyword search, and there you go.
Sad.

@uncleezno: I agree fully. We don't have secret prisons in Afghanistan nor do we experiment with mind altering gases on our own civilians... :-)
@oneandone: They changed the drug policy last year. It still plays a part, but they evaluate people more on a case-by-case basis now instead of zero tolerance.

I wish they'd take me. I'm fluent in Ghost Recon, SOCOM, and Rainbow 6. I work best from home so maybe they could pay me to scour the ps3/xbox live servers for terrorist.
