Krispy Kreme To Celebrate Inauguration With Donut Giveaway

9554 views

Hey there true American, Krispy Kreme wants to help celebrate the inauguration of your new President by giving you a free donut. Or as Krispy Kreme, defender of America as the land of the obese would probably prefer to rebrand them, freedom bagels. Here's how it works: Obama is inaugurated and you get a donut.

The Inauguration Day promotional offer is good for one doughnut of choice per customer on Jan. 20. No purchase is necessary. To find a participating store near you, visit Krispy Kreme's Store Locator.

How fatteningly simple!

Just get there early in case stores conveniently run out of donuts like they did on election day, when Alex snapped this sad shot of donut deception.

Someone has to say it...

Mmmmmmm...donuts....

user-pic

Krispy Kreme donuts kick ass, end of discussion. And not only that, you get a free one for the inauguration. What could be better?

user-pic

Well considering I live in DC, I am pretty sure the one downtown will run out about 5 minutes after they open. Oh well, I guess whoever goes out braving the masses kind of deserve a free donut.

user-pic

Excuse me ma'am, I just tried this chocolately donut, but it tasted just like the rest of them.

user-pic

How fitting -- the day we saw Obama speak, we gave out Krispy Kreme doughnuts to the other people in line. Original Glazed: Bringing the people together.

user-pic

That closed sign is a bit of grammar FAIL, that was saved by a frosting of spelling WIN.

Why? because doughnuts are made out of dough, not do.

user-pic

Is this really such an event? Everytime I've ever gone to a Krispy Kreme, they've offered me one free donut. They did it in Connecticut, they do it in Virginia- I just assumed this was a common thing.

user-pic

once again, as with all "free giveaways" or "sales" or "Walmart stampedes" where a store has a reasonable expectation of large crowds, I wish they would somehow plan for the numbers by making people print out numbered/coded coupons online (or any reasonable solution) so that they know how many they can handle, and people's time isn't wasted with waiting in line for something they may not get.

Stores should be obligated to handle these things right when they announce them.

user-pic

Yay, let's all celebrate the inauguration of the first African-American president by eating crappy donuts!

I wonder if Shipley can be convinced to do this.

user-pic

@valarmorghulis: Ah, but they [in most cases] contain no nuts.

Re-brand as "doughring", perhaps FTW?

user-pic

Hmm...two locations in NYC, both in Penn Station. Next closest is 60 miles away in Milford, CT. Number 10 on the list of nearest locations? Washington, DC.

user-pic

So lets tear down some more trees printing out something that may or may not entitle the holder to the free doughnut? While I agree stores should be prepared for hordes of people when offering free things, it is not their responsibility to ensure everybody in the country receives said free item.

If Krispy Kreme wants to give out 10 doughnuts and call it a day... at least they gave that many away for free.

user-pic

@Charybdis:

That would be awesome! Shipley's beats KK by a mile..
But that's just me. I've been eating Shipley's for as long as I can remember.. Their apple fritters are very good and fattening..

user-pic

@ScottRose:
Ah! But a nut can also refer to a shape!

user-pic

NO FAIR - there aren't any Krispy Kremes in Houston - they left shop years ago...:(

user-pic

@evilfremen
Maybe Dunkin' Donuts should be matching this giveaway up in the Blue states. I think your typical Krispy Kreme Kustomer is not likely to have voted for President-Elect Obama.

user-pic

Genius! How could you only get one donut, I know I am already thinking of getting a box while im there. Krispy Kreme, bringing America together, one sprinkled donut at a time.

user-pic

@techgoddess:

There are now a grand total of 3 in Maryland. I remember checking a few months ago and there were 7, so they are quickly shrinking.

If only Tim Horton's would take their place...

user-pic

@spazztastic: You live in the land of Dunkin, unfortunately.

user-pic

@downwithmonstercable: They'll give you a free one if you go in when the 'Hot Now' sign is on too, if you didn't know.

user-pic

Three Portland-area locations = three free donuts.
God Bless America.

user-pic

@downwithmonstercable:

What could be better?

How about a doughnut that's actually cooked all the way through, one that doesnt taste like Nasty? I'll take a Top Pot doughnut any day of the week over a hundred of these free Krappy Kremes.

user-pic

It's a shame the 3 Krispy Kremes disappeard a few years ago in the East Bay Area, I miss pickin up a box of those every now an then. Now the closest ones are 20+ miles away.

user-pic

@kepler11: Seriously?

Consumers should be obligated to not look gift horses in the mouth, and learn to appreciate the efforts of others that cost them no money.

I understand the frustration that you feel. However, not getting something that you didn't pay money for, isn't grounds for any sort of obligation. That's more of a vote with your dollar situation.

user-pic

Oh crap! The closest one to me is the one on Dupont Circle, and there's no way in hell I'm going to Dupont on inauguration day! They should mail them to DC-area residents. :P Get on that, Krispy Kreme.

user-pic

Doesn't Krispy Kreme give out free doughnuts every day? They used to have them here in Toronto, and every time I went in, there'd be someone standing by the line-up handing out free glazed doughnuts.

It always confused the hell out of me, because generally speaking that's what I went there for. They'd give it to me free while I was in line, and then I'd leave. Which perhaps explains why there aren't any left in Canada.

user-pic

@evilfremen: Living right downtown myself, I am so NOT going out there inauguration day. Your prediction is probably right.

user-pic

@spazztastic: I grew up in Milford, which has at least ten DD's in a town of 50,000. When that Krispy Kreme opened a few years ago, it was like a carnival. They literally had shuttles taking people to Krispy Kreme.

Also, DD>KK.

user-pic

@kimsama: My picture that Carey used is from the Dupont one. Take solace knowing that they'd probably be out even if you did go.

user-pic

Yuck. I don't like Krispy Kreme. Even if I did, I'm not going near the KK here that day. It will be PACKED.

It's a good thing for them that everyone knows where they are. A tornado ate their sign in January '07. They still haven't replaced it.

user-pic

Uh - Krispy Kreme gives out a free donut EVERY day.

Now they are calling this a "special".

Weird.

user-pic

@everclear75:

We grew up on Shipley's donuts. Nobody else's seems to compare, though sadly quite a few people went positively orgasmic when Krispy Kreme moved in a few years ago. I guess that just leaves more good donuts for me.

user-pic

@__Ken__: You don't always get a free donut. If the workers are taking them fresh off the line, they will offer one to customers waiting. But I've never seen them pull one out of the case to give away.

user-pic

Was that sign written by a LOLcat?

user-pic

@Alex Chasick: LOL, I'm glad I didn't hike over there on election day, then!

P.S. I had a sneaking suspicion that photo was from our proud Krispy Kreme. If for no other reason than that is some DC-level crazy grammar. ^_^

user-pic

@SiennaAnaxagoras:

If you go into Kripy Kreme when they are in the process of baking a new batch, you get a free glazed one. You can tell if the outside light is on. I've always had to specifically ask, but if it happened to you a couple times that could have been it. They also have samples frequently.

user-pic

@failurate:

And you normally don't get to select the type.

user-pic

How far would you drive and how long would you stand in line for a free donut?

user-pic

@spazztastic: Just be thankful your only local Krispy Kreme isn't in D.C. They are celebrating the Inauguration with free donuts, but most of us in the area won't be able to get to the free donuts. The irony, it burns.

user-pic

@thesadtomato: Great generalization.

We've got Krispy Kreme here in Obamatown. We kinda like Obama here in Chicago!

user-pic

Perhaps we can offer Bush a dozen of these if he is willing to leave office a few days early.

user-pic

I suppose it's only fitting that we use a giveaway to mark the inauguration of a president who has blatantly promised the largest giveaway in American history.

user-pic

I have never gotten a free donut.

SO sad.

Of course I buy a dozen and eat them all by myself

(Day old KK's Glazed Donuts are just wonderful when zapped in the micro for 9 seconds)

user-pic

@downwithmonstercable: There's probably a local doughnut shop in every larger town or city that put Krispy Kreme to shame. Though among the big chains, they're probably among the best.

user-pic

@valarmorghulis: you mean those don't actually contain nuts?

user-pic

It would be nice to drown my sorrows of the horror that the next four years will bring by having a delicious and free doughnut but alas all the KKs around here closed.

user-pic

@thesadtomato: Considering Dunkin makes the nastiest chunks of fiberglass insulation sold as "Donuts" it makes sense to give them to Obama voters. ;)

You know DD is bad when Rachel Ray says "Yum-O" to them.
