Domino's Burns Subway's C&D On National TV
I'll still never order a sandwich from either establishment except under duress, but I approve of how Domino's handled Subway's cease-and-desist letter over their new campaign claiming Domino's oven-baked sandwiches beat Subway's 2-1 in a taste test paid for by Domino's: with flames.
"I was going to burn the letter," says "Domino's CEO - who, contrary to popular belief, is not the Noid guy, "but everything's better when it's oven-baked." Then he tosses the letter in a big Domino's oven and it catches fire. Then they roll the commercial Subway's tried to get taken down. Ha, suck it, Subway! Oh wait, I just remembered they're both crap. Cheers.

This is a test using rich text formatting and html links. It's the generic "company" ad that should appear on all posts with the Company category if they don't have an ad attached to a specific company.

I saw this last night and was wondering if there really had been a letter sent. I guess so.
I've heard that some places (Germany comes to mind) actually have laws against mentioning your "superiority to the competition" in advertising...ie, your product and message have to stand on their own merits.
I hate the commercials because of how they think we're all idiots who don't know what 2-1 means, and we need a preacher and choir to illustrate. And jumping dogs.
Of course, I also will not be ordering any of these from Domino's because I'm sure there's some delivery fee minimum, and I don't usually order pizza anyway.
@tkozikow: Exactly. They tried to be cute and make this a lawyer issue, and Domino's hit 'em where it hurts... the court of public opinion. This ad is hilarious!
I've never had the Domino's sandwhiches, but I am a fan of the Subway ones. Sometimes I'm not in the mood to cook for myself, but hate eating out because of a) price and b) the artery-clogging properties of most takeout. I'll usually go to Subway and order one of their grilled chicken sandwhiches with lots of veggies. Not the freshest, tastiest meal, but its fairly inexpensive (5$ for a whole footlong is good for CT) and isn't terrible for you.
The hardest part is avoiding the mayo, cheese and other terrible add-ons. If you can do that, then their sandwhiches are a good alternative when you just aren't in the mood to cook. I imagine I wouldn't enjoy the Domino's ones because they just don't look that healthy.
@Riddler: Their stance used to be "To beat Quizno you have to cheat" but then they replaced those ads with their scary rat things.
If this had happened with Quizno they could have been like, "Here's proof you have to cheat to beat us!" I've never had one of their subs but I liked those ads.
@lalaland13: Oh come on, the jumping dogs bit is making fun of other commercials that feel they must illustrate what 2-1 means. I thought it was damn funny.
@Ash78: I *think* in the US you can't defame your competition, so anything you say you have to back up...and reasonably.
@Rectilinear Propagation: I think before dominos started making subs, Subway started making pizzas, so that one could backfire
@lalaland13: thing is, most people are idiots. visuals help people to, well, visualize things, even if they're not dumb. plus, they're kind of funny examples. and no, dominoes doesn't have a minimum, i don't think they charge for delivery, either.
@Rob Weddle: He was the original owner of the business, and started it. He sold Domino's in 1998. I'll support them because they are headquartered in my hometown and it's a lot of jobs for this area.
@snowburnt: Really? Huh. Well maybe an ad mocking the fact that it was Dominos' taste test. Their marketing people could have come up with something.
@Rectilinear Propagation: Actually, Domino's kinda did that earlier in this campaign, with the sub shop employee ordering from Domino's and telling the driver to leave it in the alley.
@Keith Kacin: Probably a disclaimer about how they paid for the taste test & how many people were in it, that sort of thing.
@Karl Kvalvik: Subway used to be decent. When their five dollar crap log started taking off, the ingredients just seemed to get less in quality/quantity...
I havent been there in months now, but I dont think I will anyway now.....
I don't much care for cease and desist letters either, and I think it's great that they burned the letter. But maybe the reason dominos is preferred by Americans 2-1 is they have a lot more calories, even when accounting for the differences in sub size (6" for SW vs. 8" for D). There's nothing my fellow Americans like more than food with a s**tload of calories.
@Rectilinear Propagation: There needs to be more Quiznos where there is less Quiznos.
Both stores around me closed...
Maybe domino's should work harder on their pizza before branching out to sandwiches. Also, I ate a subway sandwich today, and not only was it delicious, but I got a sandwich, a drink, and some chips for a $5 price point. Did I mention that domino's sucks at making pizza? I did? I just want to make sure that everyone knows that the pizza place making ads about how good it's sandwiches are sucks at making pizza.
@Ash78: In the US, you can't say Subway Sucks, but can Say Dominos doesn't. Just like voting commercials, where they can't say don't for for X, he's a poopoohead.
@Keith Kacin: "Taste preference based on a national taste test by an independent research company of Dominoes Oven Baked Sandwich including - Philly Cheese Steak, Chicken Ranch and Italian versus Subway Fresh Toasted Sandwich varieties - Steak & Cheese, Chicken & Bacon Ranch and Italian BMT."

And for reference, be sure to add the "&fmt=18" (no quotes) to the end of Youtube URLs to get the high quality version (if available).
@laker: I really don't get why people go to Subway when their product is crap. Quizno's is better, but if you are looking for a chain my preference is Potbelly. The size and price are just right and the subs are oh so tasty.
I guess if I just really want a toasted sandwich, I'll consider Domino's.
But if I'm out and about and want some choice and variety, with the added bonus that it's done in just a couple minutes, Subway still wins.
All food tradeoffs are about premeditation vs. choice and convenience. And if I'm going to premeditate all of my eating, it's going to be food from home.
My head a splode.
@discounteggroll: It's hard enough to serve a major corporation, let alone with a competing product.
Would have been cool, though.
@silver-bolt:
...is it legal to say something like, "Get a Domino's Sandwich today, because OUR food won't give you cancer!"

I'm not a fan of the Domino's sandwich, but I am a fan of burning Cease and Desist letters. So much so I think I'll buy something from Domino's to show my support.
