when I worked there for 6 months, those of us in the PC department were relatively knowledgeable and I really didn't care to push something onto someone if they didn't want it.
I was just as happy for someone to leave without buying anything as I was for them to buy a protection plan (which was a waste and often I told them. Most problems aren't covered)
I did however, quit working in the TV department cause I really didn't know shit about TV's. PCs were better for me. God I hated that place though.
LOL, I thought this story was "Top 10 Circuit City Stores of All Time." I was all ready for an upbeat piece on which stores were actually successful and had good customer service.
BTW, has anybody been to the mall in Syracuse, NY where there's a Best Buy upstairs and directly below it there's a Circuit City on the first floor? I've never seen anything like that before and found it kinda humorous.
@karmaghost: Midtown Manhattan, there's a Best Buy directly next door to a Circuit City on 5th Ave around 45th Street.
Circuit City's demise isn't anything to rejoice about. Granted, many stores sucked. I've had my own issues with them, and stopped shopping there some time ago.
But less competition only reduces the consumers' choices. It strengthens whoever is left. And allows the remaining vendors to charge more and limit choices.
@dresden: I'm not sure at this point. Circuit City's website hasn't been updated yet.
But I do know that Chase issues Circuit City credit cards, so you'll most likely end up with a Chase Visa or MasterCard of some sort in its place.
@dresden: I worked at CC years ago, granted it was under FNANB at the time. Generally CC accounts would turn into Visa accounts if they were not used for a very long time. Chase might do the same.
Here's another story about Circuit City for you and it just happened yesterday!
I found a deal online for a $10 360 guitar. It was my birthday yesterday, so I went ahead and bought it for pick up at a local store rather than getting it shipped so I could actually play it on my birthday. I go to the store with the required materials (CC, ID, and my receipt on my iphone). I present the CC and ID and the guy says he can't accept my ID because the picture is faded. I point out to him that the ID is 12 years old to the day, and that there is a much more recent picture on the front of the credit card. No dice. He stands there for a while expecting me to argue with him. I just stand there staring at him in disbelief for about 20 seconds, then walk out. I go home to try and find my fucking passport, which is buried under shit or something because I just moved. Great, can't find it. I call the manager. I tell the manager the situation and he basically defends his guy. I give a million reasons why this is retarded: the CC picture is clear and recent whereas the ID picture is 12 years old anyway; if I had stolen all of my stuff, including the iphone that I used to show them the receipt, I probably wouldn't risk getting caught trying to get this $10 guitar, etc etc. Finally the manager told me to "come down to the store and we'll take a look". I was like "uhh, I'm not driving 25 miles back and forth just for you to deny the ID over a $10 guitar.. can you give me some guarantee?" To which I was met with silence. Finally I asked him to just cancel the order from my CC and I would be there to pay for it in cash. Fine, he said and hung up. I went back to the store and paid for the $10 guitar in cash. No apology, just smarmy smiles. I got back home and checked online; sure enough, my order had not been canceled.
Thank god I'll never be able to use them again even if they do have a nice deal. Fuck them to hell. Idiots.
The website is closing as early as today, the latest being Sunday. The liquidators control the prices now, so you'll have to go to a store.:/
@trujunglist:
Your ID was 12 years old and wasn't expired? Whoa. :o
Anyway, we have to check the picture using the driver's license, can't use any other picture. :/
The credit card is only used to swipe in the register to verify it was the same card used to purchase.
Also it takes a few days for the refund to go back to your credit card, and the order status online doesn't update immediately for canceled orders through the store - just give it a business day or two. If no refund then you can call the online number or call back the store.
@puyro:
My ID doesn't expire for another 32 years. Let's say that the picture wasn't faded and that it was 20 more years down the line. Do I even remotely resemble the picture on the ID at that point? You see what I'm getting at? It's a $10 guitar.. if I had already stolen my identity and had all of my cards with pictures on them etc, why wouldn't I go for the $1.2k HDTV?
@puyro:
Forgot to mention that the status changed immediately once I myself clicked "cancel." If I can have the status change immediately, why can't the store?
I maybe should've mentioned as well that I've used the same ID and gotten through TSA, been given tickets by cops, etc. Suddenly I get refused service at Circuit City for a $10 guitar. The fact is that I had a valid ID with a faded picture and many other forms of ID to back it up, along with the credit card with a recent picture of myself on it that wasn't faded.
@feckingmorons: Older UK licences are good until you are 70 years old. They have amended things so people getting newer ones have to renew them every 10 years, but people with the old-style ones don't have to.
It is utterly ridiculous, but that's how it is. (I have a UK and US licence.)
Perhaps this person has an id or licence from overseas.
@drdom:
Did we really have much of a choice already? It is either BB, CC, or Wally World. Just use the net to get stuff.
Arizona driver licenses don't expire until you turn 65. It's not that uncommon to have an old ID card.
