Coke Finally Removes "Classic" From Its Label

16737 views

In 1985, Coke added the word "classic" to its label when it brought back the original formula of the soft drink following the abject failure of its "New Coke" experiment. Now, finally, they are getting rid of it.

Confirming a report in today’s issue of Beverage Digest, the company said “Classic” would be dropped in the first half of the year.
...
“It is a relic of the past and doesn’t sound very modern,” according to an unnamed source in the story. “How many people are going around saying, ‘May I please have a Coke Classic?’”

There's a Beverage Digest?!

user-pic

It isn't the original formula if it has High Fructose Corn Syrup in it.
I hoard the Kosher for Passover coke when it is available.

user-pic

Old-fashioned? Can kids today even read the cursive on the front, or do they just assume it's Arabic?

user-pic

I actually kinda like the word "Classic" on the label and I do think it's still relevant.

You have Diet Coke, Coke Zero, Coke Plus, Cherry Coke, Vanilla Coke, Cherry Vanilla Coke, etc.

Coca-Cola Classic = regular, unleaded Coke to me.

I shall miss it.

user-pic

@suburbancowboy: There's Kosher Coke?? Well, I'll be.

Does it taste different? Where can get it from?

user-pic

@suburbancowboy: I think Mexican coke is made with real sugar.

user-pic

@shorty63136: There's probably a leaded Coke somewhere.

user-pic

OH NOES! However shall I know that its not the New Coke or Classic flavor now???11one

:P

user-pic

@shorty63136: Yeah, I like it, too. It's always been there for me, I've grown attached to it. Not to mention that its new typeface is bitchin'.

user-pic

@shorty63136: Exactly. It's like original M&M's. (although at one point they were calling them plain!)

user-pic

How on earth could they ever consider it a "Classic" when it's bloated with HFCS? I don't drink Coke (along with every other soft drink) for that very reason, it contains HFCS. I wish people would boycott Coke until they were forced to use pure cane sugar in their formula. Mexican Coke is too expensive to buy all the time, but it sure makes for a nice treat.

user-pic

While they're at it, and especially now that corn prices have risen due to the ethanol scam, why don't they just go back to the original recipe (sans cocaine)?

Cane sugar FTW

user-pic

My mom always laughs about how she was one of the 'taste-testers' that picked new coke over coke classic. In Atlanta, of all places. This is all her fault!!!!

user-pic

I love it when people argue over HFCS and sugar, as if sugar is somehow good for you.

user-pic

@kaptainkk: Mexican Coke is expensive because it uses sugar rather than HFCS.

Say what you will, but sugar is not the squeaky clean ingredient people bill it as, either...

user-pic

@kaptainkk: There are brands out there that make soft drinks with real sugar. Boylan and Jones are two brands off the top of my head. I think Jones is carried at Panera too.

user-pic

@Shadowfire:
Squeaky clean, no. Yummy? Damn skippy.

user-pic

@kaptainkk: bloated? can you really taste the difference? and if you did it's just your mind that tells you otherwise. New Coke (where HFCS was introduced) was actually a better flavor to a huge majority of the population, it was just the small minority that voiced their opinions and made everyone "think" it tasted bad. What's wrong with HFCS, it makes it sweet just like cane sugar?

I'm a RC guy myself.

user-pic

@Spero: Neither are good for you, but since I'm drinking it anyway, sugar tastes much better. I always save a few bottles when I travel out of the country. Still have some from Jamaica, and a couple I found in the Mexican section of Kroger.

user-pic

Does anybody else remember how Coke tried to brainwash everyone about how "New Coke" tasted better than "Old Coke" back in '86 ? Remember how they trotted out survey after survey ,testimonial after testimonial to "prove" that the swill that you had been drinking for 100 years was horse pee compared to the new product ?
Now. Do you remember how you felt when you first took a slurp of "New Coke "?

It was about then that I decided that all big companies were full of shit.

user-pic

@Davan: New Coke is better than both Pepsi and Coca-Cola Classic in a huge majority of the population. Read the wiki on it. It's a great lesson on the role of mobs in society, and how people are easily swayed by others.

user-pic

@kaptainkk: If you're going to bitch about that, why not add the fact it doesn't contain cocaine anymore. Now THAT is the classic formula.

user-pic

I'm just glad they don't change the design every other year like some other cola companies...

user-pic

And in other news, the cans will now contain 11oz instead of 12. Film at 11.

user-pic

@Spero: Sugar is no "worse" for you than HFCS in my opinion (unless you happen to be allergic to corn of course). However, sugar fills you up much faster than HFCS and thus you (hopefully) consume less of it. Plus, by kicking HFCS you're not supporting the already bloated and over-subsidized corn industry.

... and duh, real sugar just tastes better.

user-pic

@Shadowfire: That may be so, but I'm sure transportation costs have a lot to do with it too. I will take sugar, squeaky clean or not, over HFCS any day.

user-pic

Is having "classic" on the can really doing anything negative? This seems pointless. Nobody looks at this and thinks old or vintage or whatever

user-pic

Too bad Peter Jennings isn't around to break into regular programming and make the announcement. A truly historic moment.

user-pic

LOL at everyone freaking about HFCS. Haven't you seen the PSA's they've got all over TV right now?

user-pic

@William Gu: It's just an industry-specific publication. When I was in college, I was WAY into specialty beverages, and would read BevNet every morning to see what new drinks and sodas were coming out, then spend too much money having them shipped to my mail box.

user-pic

@shorty63136: Well that was the difference. Diet "COKE" was new coke (probably why it tastes nasty) and Coca-Cola was the original formula (granted with HFCS added).

user-pic

The "classic" has been missing from Canadian cans for at least 6 months. Welcome to the club.

user-pic

@Jordan Martin: can you really taste the difference?

Yes, yes I can. Have you tried it? Sugar pop and HFCS Pop definitely taste different. Putting health concerns and taste preferences aside, there is no denying you can taste a difference and that sugar and HFCS coke taste different. Both sweet but different.

user-pic

@jsbeagle: Because the corn lobbyists ensure that corn is heavily subsidized (so it remains cheaper, thus why EVERYONE is using HFCS).

If the lobby went away, everyone would be back to sugar right quick.

user-pic

@danep: However, sugar fills you up much faster than HFCS and thus you (hopefully) consume less of it.

Ding ding ding. We have a winner this is why its better to have real sugar in things rather than HFCS.

user-pic

@Snarkysnake: I was disgusted! I didn't need anybody to "brainwash" me to think that New Coke was bad - I was just set against it from the moment I heard that they were getting rid of the old recipe. It felt like a big stupid company telling you that this is what you will drink now and you will like it dammit! New Coke would have had to taste outrageously fantastic for me to have been happy to switch - and it didn't. It tasted like Pepsi IMO.

user-pic

@Spero: Its the chemical makeup of the molecules. Sugar and HFCS are treated differently by your body. Granted either in large doses is equally bad, but HFCS spikes chemical levels in your body much more swiftly and is more readily converted directly into fat (thus, the obesity epidemic as it finds its way into EVERYTHING we eat)

user-pic

@shorty63136: Jewish colleges, or markets in heavily Jewish neighborhoods, but only during Passover.

user-pic

@Tmoney02: it also explains why manufactures would prefer not to use real sugar.

HFCS is cheaper and the consumer consumes more, leading to more sales.

user-pic

@DevoAlmighty: Which are SPONSORED by the Corn Industry?

It's like a drug dealer saying "Oh don't worry, this cocaine is FINE in moderation!"

user-pic

@shorty63136: I thought "unleaded coke" meant caffeine free.

user-pic

@GC: They do. They (or maybe it's Japan) also have a Coke product under the name Hi-C that I could not get ENOUGH of when I visited The New World of Coke here in Atlanta.

Crap. I wish I had the picture of the label. It's in my iPhoto on my home computer. :(

user-pic

@suburbancowboy: Mexican Coke, Kosher Coke, and some Canadian coke are made with sugar instead of HFCS. Without the U.S.'s unnaturally high corn subsidies, HFCS isn't as cheap for soda production in other nations, making the decision to use sugar less costly. That, and in other places, they've banned its use due to obesity concerns.

Sugar-containing coke has a subtly lighter flavor to it. The liquid itself seems less cloying, less viscous, and doesn't 'stick to your throat' quite as much.

user-pic

I'm just here waiting on the "i love co**" typo. :)

user-pic

@William Gu: Sounds more like a action one takes, than a magazine one reads.
