Caylee Anthony Doll Won't Be Sold

5284 views

The manufacturer of the Caylee Anthony Doll has decided to not sell it, bowing to public reaction over the plans to sell a doll "inspired by" a child homicide victim. [Cayleedoll] (Thanks to J M!)

For once, good taste and common sense prevail! 8^D

Interesting that the organization that wanted to sell these is currently selling T-shirts, stickers, and bracelets that say "Caylee Sunshine" in the name of charity (one they haven't chosen yet) and to "raise awareness and raise money to help stop this type of crime from being committed". If only it really was that easy. Sad.

user-pic

Did they actually produce any of the dolls, or was it just an idea?

Its wrong, but genius if they intended to cause an uproar, then a month or two later sell the dolls for a lot of money on eBays as "collectibles".

user-pic

...And hundreds of news directors of cable "news" programs silently gnash their teeth and weep.

user-pic

@changed my name: Raising awareness to stop this type of crime? Yes of course! Because without a doll, how are we supposed to know not to kill children!?!? If only Hitler had had a murdered Jew doll as a child!

@Trai_Dep: the person that "created" this was on nancy grace last night. Normally, I can't stand her, but somehow it was REALLY satisfying to see her tear into the guy (he's literally the guy you picture in your head when you would imagine the scumbag that would come up with something like this). Highlights from the interview: "No, we don't know how much of the profits will go to charity, yet..." and "no charities are currently willing to accept our donations..."

My favorite was his justification for the whole thing basically being that hey, they could have made it actually look like caylee, but they didn't out of "respect".

user-pic

@lpranal: Funny that. Nancy Grace and this guy are in the same business: exploitation.

user-pic

But...but what doll can I get to play with my Jon Benet Ramsey doll now?

user-pic

I'm so glad somebody decided to use a piece of their brain that was not covered in mold and dust.

user-pic

@mgy: Yeah, there's the pot calling the kettle black. Nancy's been making money off the backs of the murdered for years now, and always with that screaming indignation that for some reason, when SHE does it, it's honorable.

user-pic

I am usually one with a pretty morbid sense of humor. But this story seriously made me ill. I am happy though to see that the doll won't be sold.

user-pic

This is just all so damn stupid! I'm not going to argue that child homicide isn't terrible. What is terrible is our media's coverage of it. Caylee has basically been forcibly entered into our nation's zeitgeist.

Any idiot in the world has the right to create and sell a doll with the likeness of a public figure which unfortunately, Caylee has become. It's another thing entirely for them to actually do this. This doll shouldn't have been conceived, this outcry shouldn't have had to take place, and poor Caylee should have been an unfortunate local issue rather than a tool to scare the nation's parents with.

Shouldn't a recession kill off the stupid gimicks and incompentent business folk?

Nancy Grace weeps in her dressing room as tonight's headline evaporates.

She consoles herself by eating another kitten...

user-pic

@changed my name: Because I never would've been aware of this type of crime without such a program -- there are never any high-profile cases of young white girls in danger, you know?

user-pic

@FuryOfFirestorm: Sometimes I wonder. The people who come up with these ideas... were they just suffering an average, understandable brain-fart, or do they spend life permanently "out-of-bounds"?

user-pic

@changed my name:

Raise awareness of domestic abuse? I guess I'll be a peepin tom on my neighbors...for the children of course.

user-pic

@Saboth: Anything for the kids man...anything.

user-pic

@JakeChance84: What ticks me off isn't that she's become so recognizable, but that it seems like it's only ever pretty little white girls who do when this sort of thing happens. Heaven forbid something ever happen to my baby girl...but if it did why should she get more news coverage because she's white?

user-pic

@TCinIowa:

Oh no, she'll still pimp this somehow. Nancy Grace will always find a way to make a buck off of tragedy.

user-pic

@JakeChance84:

Sad as it is to say, Caylee Anthony is just another popular media story and she will soon be replaced by the next White Woman of the Moment. She wasn't the first and she won't be the last. I wouldn't say she was part of our nation's "zeitgeist" at all.

Public figures don't fade out of the nation's memory the very moment that Nancy Grace stops talking about them. I think the doll was exploitative because no matter how the media capitalized upon this story, it is still a private one, and most of the nation only cares about this case insofar as television is pulling their heartstrings daily.

user-pic

My original thought on the matter still stands:

user-pic

So, by making an incredibly stupid decision, then after that decision comes to public scrutiny, reversing it, is a move worthy of adulation?

Congratulations, toy maker. You have shown the absolute bare minimum of humanity. Hooray. Next time, try not being a total ass.

user-pic

@TCinIowa: ...Then sticks her finger down her throat to purge herself of the "ugly" calories from the bits of fluff, bones, gristle and morsels of raw kitten meat.
Yes, Nancy Grace is today's Baba Yogi. Our bulimiac Baba Yogi.

user-pic

I really don't understand this. First what charity would prevent "crimes like this" from happening again? Planned Parenthood? Adopt-the-unwanted-toddlers-of-irresponsible-drunks? Family Services? I don't buy the company's claim.

Second why did they make the doll a generic blond American Girl Doll lookalike? Caylee looks brunette in all of the photos. What a bizarre line of logic lead to the creation of this thing?

user-pic

$79 bucks and you have to choose from 5 different styles. But they are made in the US. And the charity disclosure is only available to customers 3 days after the purchase. The whole thing is wrong.
