500,000 Stork Craft Cribs Recalled

2179 views

More killer cribs are on the loose, this time from Stork Craft. The CPSC has issued a recall for all Stork Craft cribs "with manufacturing and distribution dates between May 2000 and November 2008," because the metal support brackets can crack and break, creating a suffocation danger. If you own one, call Stork Craft at 866-361-3321 to order a free bracket replacement kit, or click here.

They were sold at "major retailers including J.C. Penney, Kmart and Walmart stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com, Babiesrus.com, Costco.com, Sears.com and Walmart.com from May 2000 through January 2009 for between $100 and $400."

Be forewarned, their website is reeeaaallly slow. That's what happens when you recall seven and a half years of product.

I'd say call. Make sure to have the model number, country of manufacture and date of purchase when you do call. It's all printed on the baseboard thingy where the assembly instructions are.

Wait-they were making these for eight years before they realized there was a problem? I hope this is an issue of long-term metal fatigue and not a horrific lack of incident tracking.

My guess would be this has to do with metal fatigue caused by repeated/long-term use. Rule of thumb on cribs is 5 years or 3 kids, whichever comes first; if we're talking about 8-year-old cribs, we have a problem.

I'm all for safety recall announcements... however the tone of the consumerist has changed.

Wait? But I thought cribs were supposed to be the ultimately superior and only safe place for a baby to sleep...
