Starting January 1, drug companies will implement a voluntary moratorium on branded goodies from drug companies.

Until this becomes some sort of regulated law the drug companies will just continue the slight of hand to make it look like they changed while it is business as usual.

The lunches, conferences and trips are where the real money is spent.

My girlfriend's a nurse and she brings home mugs, pens, and post-it notes all the time. This is kinda sad, we're going to have to buy this stuff from now on. :(

Even if it may be slight of hand, hopefully it makes for at least a little, legitimate change.

Except for the fact I suffered 27 years with my ADHD, and my psycho, who does have branded things throughout her office, prescribed me drugs that have finally helped me deal, I would have a problem with this. I take one generic and one on brand, only b/c the generic isn't as good as the on brand.

@SUNY_SteveDave: It is a good thing that your doc is willing to prescribe generics. Doctors frequently get pressure from drug reps based on what they are prescribing. Drug reps are able to get a doctor's prescribing history, IIRC from the pharmacies.
Some salesperson with no medical training should not be able to pressure or give incentives to your doctor to influence what they give patients.

In my experience many doctors only know about newer drugs based on what the drug reps provide or through the drug company seminars. Some doctors do their research or at least look up the drug first, others don't. Then there is the whole problem of drug companies suppressing negative information about certain drugs.

@bohemian: Well, I also don't have insurance currently, so that's why I went with the one generic. My Doc will also give me samples if the reps give them to her, to help me out. She's my favorite doc!

My husband is a doctor and our family loves the stuff he brings home! My children collect all the weird pens and we have the post-it notes and other things all over our house. It's sad that we won't have the fun of asking him what he brought home this time. At least I'll still get to go to the free bribe dinners. :) By the way: all the advertising that are on the pens and at the lectures at the free dinners, do not influence him at all. A lot of times we go to the free dinner knowing that the drug it is advertising is not helpful to patients at all and has more side effects then benefits.
