So, What Did Everybody Get For Christmas?

3838 views

If America's Google searches for the 25th are any indicator, you all enjoyed tasty meals at IHOP, went for a Christmas Day shopping spree at Walmart, and gave up on Rock Band and Guitar Hero and searched for cheat codes. Tell us what you got, and what you gave, in the comments.

I'll start: my excellent fiancee got me a PS3 and tracked down a copy of Final Fantasy VII on eBay. It's a wonder I've found any time to post.

Christmas Day shopping sprees at Walmart? Really.

user-pic

FF7 works on PS3?

user-pic

A spinning wheel (no, seriously), a large box of vintage buttons, a nice pair of shoes and the husband doing all the dishes.

user-pic

Nothing I truly wanted. I wanted to get the Christmas Spirit this year, but it passed me by, and I never seemed to be able to catch it/hold on to it. Maybe next year.

user-pic

ack i wish square enix would release ff7 for the psp :(

i got Mario Party 8 for the Wii, a starbucks gift card and a mug. I was hoping I'd just get cash :(

user-pic

The Env2 phone, Inkdeath, photo printer, Angus Thongs and Perfect Snogging DVD, a few bath/shower things, full bottle of Victoria's Secret Desire, Xbox 360 Quick Charge kit, 360 Black controller, 360 rechargeable black battery, Soul Caliber IV, and $50 Wal-mart gift card.

Also my parents ordered a Bleach wall scroll for me but its on backorder. xD

user-pic

Why do we no longer trust our friends and family to actually buy good and worthwhile, thoughtful Christmas presents for us and instead ask for gift cards and/or cash? And why do we give in and give gift cards and/or cash ourselves? Do we no longer trust anyone but ourselves?

user-pic

The usual -- bunch of clothes from L.L. Bean, iTunes gift card, wool socks.

user-pic

Both our extended families agreed on smaller Christmases this year. My side said "all homemade stuff." My mom made her amazing cheeseball and put it in a cute basket with crackers. My sister took 12 of her best photographs and made calendars. I gave cookies, since baking is the closest I come to being crafty. My husband gave me a pair of gold hoop earrings and a new spice rack.

This is one of the happiest Christmases I remember in a long time. As cliche as it sounds, I think we were all more focused on each other instead of "stuff."

user-pic

Cozy fleece jacket, heatproof spatulas, more animals for my creche, and dinner with my family.

user-pic

a tomtom gps! also some work clothes, a t-shirt with snoopy on it, a pin cushion that looks like a cupcake, some candy

user-pic

@puyro: glad you got the full bottle of Vistoria's Secret Desire cuz I remember the year I only got a half full bottle. Man was there hell to pay.

user-pic

My wonderful fiancee got me an iPhone.

This thing is the new crack.

user-pic

I got tickets to an Eartha Kitt concert and a special reading by Harold Pinter. And a gift card to Sharper Image.

And Chris, don't you know it's supposed to be our excellent fiancee? Following Ben's lead, we always share our love interests.

user-pic

i scored this year. dell hybrid pc & fender strat guitar & amp. also other assorted goodies from extended family. yay me!!1

user-pic

@RandomHookup: Sorry, I meant to chastise Alex, not Chris.

user-pic

@bbbco: Sometimes a gift card is nice to also have the fun of shopping for oneself. My sister loves to shop but is only working a couple of part-time jobs right now; she asked for gift cards because she wanted the fun of going shopping for herself.

user-pic

Mainly, Garmin eTrex Legend GPS, and a bunch of accessories for it. Basically, what I really wanted, but didn't want to get out and ask for. Oh, and my parents paying for another semester of college, which is always nice.

user-pic

I got CompUSA's extended protection plan to replace my laptop with a gift card for the full purchase price because it just went in for it's fourth repair.

user-pic

She got me an Easel and New Paints and Brushes. She also got me Scrubs Season 4.
I got her David Sedaris' new book, a Fondue Set, Big Brain for the DS a graphic T and a day at the Spa.
Mostly bought from Woot and Amazon.

user-pic

Earrings! To match a necklace I got for my anniversary.

Also a case of the stomach flu, so I actually haven't seen my family yet, just my husband. :)

I got my husband an indoor seed starting set-up (he grows crazy-hot and heirloom peppers, they have to be started in Feb. for spring transplatation), so I'm looking forward to fresh winter lettuce for me on one of the shelves. :D

user-pic

@th1nwhiteduke: You WILL work on Christmas Day or its back to Mexico!

user-pic

I got a Dyson vacuum and a Garmin nuvi GPS. I also got a Slanket, which I wish I could wear 24/7. I gave my dad this print, all framed and stuff: [brandonbird.com]

@bbbco:

Well, our culture seems to have slid towards, "I want what I want, and I want it now! I deserve what I want!" So, if your friend doesn't get you what you want, gets what they think you'd like and misses, you no longer value "the thought" and instead think your friend is an idiot for buying you something you don't want.

I am terrible at buying gifts, and I think it's because of what I said above. The thought doesn't count to me. If you get me something pointless, how did you really 'think'? If you couldn't try hard enough or just ask what I wanted, then you weren't thinking about me.

Also, I am not very sentimental and find gift giving and receiving uncomfortable, so I prefer just getting something to let me get myself what I want.

Got: Hello Kitty comforter, Nightmare Before Christmas sheet set and comforter, crap load of NmBC shirts, NmBC note card set, NmBC decorative wall masks, GIR perfume, a Shamwow(!), an ice scraper, Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown ornaments, a skull picture frame, comfy wool skull socks, $50, and a $100 TJ Maxx gift card.

Gave: MP3 player beanie, 'Afternoon Delight' Tee and 'Godzilla' Tee to my roomie's 14 year old son who is our personal baby Godzilla; 'What If They All Fought' Tee, 'Skull' Tee, Wine Wipes and a couple various cosmetics to my roomie; A 'Ho Ho Ho' dog sweater to her mom's dog; A homemade scarf and fuzzy black bathrobe to my mom; the reindeer car costume, a jade turtle necklace and a crystal turtle necklace to my sister; Delicious biscotti from an Italian bakery for my grandparents; "Yo Gabba-Gabba" sing and gab Muno and Hello Kitty ear muffs to my youngest niece; "Rose Petal Cottage" and Hello Kitty ear muffs to my oldest niece; Lemon Meringue Bars to my friend Rich.

I enjoyed the giving part far more when it came to my nieces, except for the assembly of the Rose Petal Cottage. That was a pain in the butt, but the reactions my nieces had to their gifts were absolutely awesome and I was glad to bring them some cheer since they've been having a rough time lately.

@RandomHookup: I was going to note that I was referring to the non-communal Consumerist fiancee. Apologies!

user-pic

@Blaaaah: Allegedly. PSOne games are supposed to be fine on all iterations of the PS3; I think just PS2 games aren't able to be emulated anymore.

user-pic

I told my dad I wanted an iPhone, so today or tomorrow I'm getting the money transferred into my account. Score! I also got some very nice gifts handpicked from my Amazon list -- a lime green Fujifilm FinePix camera, an Edward Gorey book, and a Farscape dvd. Plus one or two things that haven't arrived yet. In unsolicited gifts, I got a package of Christmas crackers (lots of fun), movie tickets and candy, bath gels packaged with a teddy bear (surprisingly cute for that sort of thing), and an unfortunate musical snow globe. Luckily, my friend has found a better home for it with a co-worker who collects them.

I gave a crystal cross necklace (which also didn't arrive in time), subscriptions to Cabinet magazine, and a gift copy of World of Goo on Wii for a near-Christmas birthday.

user-pic

I got a brew kit with everything I will need to brew some heavy beer and I also got a few movies.

user-pic

I got Guitar Hero World Tour and Mirror's Edge for Ps3, a cordless dremel stylus, steel toe workboots, hess truck, abercrombie cologne, the dark knight blu-ray (kind of disappointed with the switch from full screen imax to parts of the movie with the 16:9 black bars), Denis Leary's book - Why We Suck, An old tv show series on DVD from my childhood called Shelley Duvall's Fairie Tale Theater (Probably won't watch it until I have kids)

user-pic

Gift cards to Best Buy totalling $100, which I used to buy an iPod Nano, after adding some of my own money, of course. It's the first iPod I've had, so I'm really exicted. I'm also a trumpet player, and I got the Silent Brass System (which is another reason I wanted the iPod). An interesting book, some clothes, calogne, candy from co-workers, etc. Overall, I was very happy this year!

user-pic

Got nothing, gave same.

user-pic

We, too, have done the downsizing thing this year. But with four (4!) boys in our family, it's hard to tell them Santa is just doing a drive-by. so...the relatives all chipped in and got them a Wii, Rock Band, and Guitar Hero. The Good Lady Wife and I survived with a few CDs and some hugs. Happy Boxing Day!

user-pic

PS3 Guitar Hero World Tour, PS3 Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm, and a TivoHD. Now i have to deal with Comcast to order a cablecard...

user-pic

A Tiffany's airplane charm pendant (I travel a lot), a bottle of wine, some makeup (that I picked out), iTunes gift cards, a book, and some other little knick knacks. Oh and an IOU from my mum to go clothes shopping since she and I have come to the understanding that she doesn't buy clothes for me since god knows I'm picky about what I wear.

user-pic

Gave: 3 black lily glass vases to my mom, Jeff Dunham DVD and 20oz travel mug to my dad, socks (as requested - I'm not that lame) and Grand Marnier to my step-dad, a tastebook (www.tastebook.com) to my step-mom, George Foreman to my brother, a day in San Diego to one of my step-sisters, a BB Curve cover to another, and a Forever 21 gift certificate to my third step-sister.

Got: Digital camera, George Foreman with removable plates, Cuisinart immersion blender with whisk and chopper attachments, How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman, Cooking Light cook book, John Mayer Where The Light Is DVD, Shiseido tinted moisturizer, various clothing gift certificates, some cash and a starbucks card.

Having a huge family means I spend a lot at Christmas, but I also get a lot of cool presents. Overall a great day of giving and getting.

user-pic

@Alex Chasick: That makes me want to get a PS3 as I still have all the old classics kicking around in a box somewhere...

user-pic

@puyro: You mean Bleach the anime, right? A girl that likes Bleach? Really? I'm impressed.

user-pic

A nice food processor, a graphic novel I've been wanting, and something that still has me shaking my head until it looks like it's going to fall off... my diabetic brother baked and mailed me homemeade cookies. AMAZING cookies. Cookies that I didn't get a single one of because I, too, am diabetic. WTF?

user-pic

Cash. Yummy, pretty, versatile cash. Most of it was from my younger self, though.

user-pic

a little cash from my dad, which will pay for my new crown that i'm paying out of pocket for in 2 weeks, now that i am unemployed. and my little brother gave me a bag of pot. and he loaned me his hash pipe (i have to give it back), despite the fact i do not smoke pot. but i am unemployed, so maybe it's time to start.
