Sikh Signs For Package, UPS Driver Enters His Name As "TERRORIST"
A UPS driver entered a Sikh man's name as TERRORIST on its online package-tracking database. The man's family discovered the epithet when they searched for a package UPS failed to deliver.
UPS is looking into the incident, and the package entry has since been changed to the man's last name. We'll take this moment to remind any confused readers that:
- Sikhs, who customarily wear turbans to cover their uncut hair, are not the same as Muslims, and
- Not all Muslims (very few, in fact) are terrorists

@Batwaffel: perhaps... but the company needs to weed out the asshats and dingbats who might do something like this. A better training program should point these people out, not just try to make them be kinder.
Seriously.... UPS can suck it. They screw up my deliveries EVERY time. The last time I had something delivered by them, (without having the option of choosing another company) they left the package at my neighbors. ON PURPOSE! They say that it is a common way of delivering packages. Now for a little perspective. I live in an apartment complex, where I have had a new neighbor 6 times in the past 2 years. I don't even know my new neighbor, yet UPS just assumes that I do, and that we are friendly like that?? It took me an extra two weeks of constantly going over to the neighbors house to try and get my package. I hate UPS..
Sorry, Had to rant a bit.
Not to play with semantics too much, shouldn't that be that most Muslims aren't terrorists? Saying that not all Muslims are terrorists implies that most (or at least a significant percentage) are, when in fact, actual terrorists make up a statistically insignificant (re: <1%) part of the population.
@EdnaLegume: Need to see the whole cover letter to make sense of that. It just looks like a comment on a blog now, heh. :)
@vitaminmax: Sounds about right. I got stuck with UPS a few times this past month as it was the only option for delivery with a couple of the Christmas gifts I bought online. Not one of the packages was delivered on time (one took four business days to arrive even though I paid for "next day" shipping) and with one of the shipments, UPS mistook the return address for my address, got the package all the way to the substation near my house, and sent it back to the company. Then they sent me a little postcard telling me they "couldn't find my address." I have no idea how in the heck they managed to get a postcard delivered (unless they relied on the USPS to find my house, which cracks me up.) Needless to say I managed to get most of the money spent on shipping costs refunded, and I plan on never using UPS again if I can help it.
@Radkeen: Of course, if he does lose his job, the Democrats will be there to give him government aid at the drop of a hat and to take all of the money from the hardworking, respectable people to redistribute and massacre the American dream, as well as undermine the driving force of a capitalist economy...oh wait, you were just making an offhanded political stereotype.
I mailed a package via UPS 27 days ago. It has gone all over the country twice over and then disappeared. Thanks UPS for completely screwing up(4 recorded mistakes now). since it was my $550 graphics card but the shipping was paid for by the company who made it they get the insurance money, UPS gets away with it, and I get nothing.
@snazz: I don't think any training program could weed out these idiots. No one is going to pull a stunt like this during training. Most jobs just have their mandatory "don't be a racist or sexist douche" video that you maybe have to re-watch each year.
It's just a matter of UPS firing the idiot and apologizing. I wouldn't be surprised if companies like this have a special fund set aside to 'make amends' when one of their drivers does this.
The Sikh will get over it, the douche will get a new job, and the world will keep on spinning. The most unfortunate part of this whole story is the negative shadow it casts on all other UPS drivers just trying to do their job. You never hear about a driver going out of their way to help someone get their package or carry it into their home, but as soon as one fails at being funny or something, it's all over the news.
@y2julio: Your UPS driver makes you sign? Whenever I order from newegg, amazon etc.. the driver just rings the doorbell & runs away. Christmas Eve I had to stay home so $1000 in computer parts wouldn't be left on the porch.
@snazz: no training that is even close to relevant to that job position would be able to weed out peoples biases towards other people. In fact, even asking people how they feel about a particular race and religion would get the company in a lot of trouble, becasue they could then be viewed as being biased towards the potential employee for his beliefs.
Assholes are assholes, no amount of training will ever fix that.
@JakeChance84: Well, a lot of the stories on here are isolated incidents with certain exceptions of unmitigated systematic suck within a company.
I'd certainly hope this doesn't make all UPS delivery people look bad, my UPS guy is an uber teddy bear that helped me get a ginormous package into my house earlier this month. He may very well be the civilian alter ego of some sort of superhero as far as I'm concerned.
@vitaminmax: DHL has done the same thing to me.
I get the best service from UPS actually. My driver even takes the time to put my package in a large plastic bag if I'm not home and it's a wet day.
@SulochBat: you are mistaken.
thats like saying all chinese are Chang, all brits are Smith-Curruthers etc
@vitaminmax: I have to say, UPS has left me more dented packages than USPS or FedEx. The one package I got from DHL didn't have a working tracking number, but arrived intact and on time.
UPS also delivers to the other side of the building, which is okay, as that's my grandfather's office.
@dssstrkl: Saying that not all Muslims are terrorists implies that most (or at least a significant percentage) are, when in fact, actual terrorists make up a statistically insignificant (re:
In a poll in Canada, 12 percent of Canadian Muslims thought a terrorist plot to blow up Parliament and behead the Prime Minister was justifiable. That's 84,000 people. So, while you are right that MOST Muslims are not terrorists, there are a disturbing number who seem to at least support terrorist tactics.
@th1nwhiteduke: Thats what I was thinking. The package could have come from Albert Qaeda or could have had the words "FRAGILE- PLUTONIUM" written across it. Maybe this UPS driver knew something the rest of us don't, have you thought about that?? HMMM??????
Have to comment here...
Sikhs are cool. Seriously... as a red blooded "God Fearin' Presbyterian" American who has had the honor of working side-by-side and being friends with Sikhs... the foundation of their culture is a very cool story indeed. It'd be great if dumba$$es from the US would realize how lucky we are to have these folks in our society.
And...
Screw that pinheaded delivery guy.
Also...
Not all UPS folks are bad. I happen to have a great UPS person. Heck, some of my best friends are UPS folks :-)
@picantel:
The same thing happened with me and an ebay transaction. Item was broken, and the insurance check went to the shit that mailed it to me. He got my money and the insurance check too.
@snazz: yeah... you really don't know who the assholes are until they start doing shit like this. a better training program wouldn't do anything considering most people do actually learn what is an isn't acceptable in public and stifle urges they think will incur reproach. the ups guy probably didn't think this would be discovered, especially since it was ONLY discovered cuz the package got lost. also you can't make someone kinder, compassion and kindness are personal choices.
Robert A. Hawkins
Or how about: Seung-Hui Cho
Do you need more? Because I could give you a list as long as my arm.
You need to become better educated on this subject.
@Amy Alkon: Amy, I went to that website you linked to and read the comments.
I'm disgusted.
With you people. Not with these Muslims you all hate and fear.
I'm pretty peeved at UPS. I paid for overnight shipping, and on the day of delivery... UPS never came. Oh, but their website says they tried to deliver it and it wasn't home. Problem is, I stayed home from work *JUST* to get the package. I called UPS, the rep basically it wasn't my fault I didn't answer the door.
But nobody CAME to the door. At all.
UPS doesn't care. Their driver f'd off and said they dropped it off, but didn't. I'm out of the money I paid for overnight and screwed.
@MrsLopsided: You can (well, *I* can) leave a note on the door telling them NOT to leave something but to try again or have a neighbor sign for it.
In fact, I ordered something from Amazon a couple weeks ago that I tried to cancel but Amazon had shipped it already. Amazon told me to refuse the shipment and they'd credit me back when it came back. I just left a note refusing the shipment that day and that was that.

The thing is, companies can give all the training they want on what to do and what not to do, but at the end of the day, an asshole will still act like an asshole. :\
