@concordia: He does it every time a buy.com deal is listed. Since Consumerist printed two stories over the last year about buy.com, he insists that no one should buy from them. He even comments on days they don't list deals by them.
You are one of the fortunate ones. Every transaction I've had from Buy.com has been painful.
I've normally had good luck with buy.com -- though the last thing I purchased they sent to my house and would not waive the signature requirement. I'm not going to take a day off work for a $20 item so I asked them to reroute to my office, which they wouldn't do.
I understand the security aspect of it, but they should at least mention that the address you choose will require an in-person signature.
That's too bad, because I've received some fantastic deals, such as a Peerless tilting wall mount kit for my Plasma TV for $100 less than anywhere locally, with next day shipping. I guess with most online outlets some people do end up getting screwed, which does suck. I've never really had any problem anywhere online, the problems usually crop up with the shippers (UPS, FedEx, and especially USPS).
I only had one problem with buy.com when I bought an RF adapter for about $10. It was an RCA but but it was broken. The issue I had was that they will do replacements and refunds but you need to pay for shipping. Also you get two weeks from the time they ship the original item. I knew upfront that this was the case, it is documented on the web site, but I called to ask for an exception that they cover shipping for a replacement, they said that they would not. I ended-up getting a $20 one from Radio Shack, so it really cost me $30 and two weeks of not being able to watch DVDs in the bedroom. I haven't bought anything from them since. I'm not upset, all's fair really, it is just that because they would not bend policy on such a low priced item makes it a deciding factor against them when things cost virtually the same everywhere.
I ordered a series of things. Half came. A book showed up in paperback instead of hard cover. Everything came After Christmas despite a guarantee of pre-Christmas delivery.
Their email confirmations confirmed, from the moment the order was placed, that the orders had been processed out of their warehouse. This meant that after it was clear that the orders weren't coming, they couldn't reverse the orders or cancel them because everything had gone out - ostensibly the moment I made the purchase.
They "reviewed" my claim that the paperback arrived instead of the hard cover. They rejected the claim. I reversed the charge with my credit card. Two months later, the hardcover came. They then charged for the hardcover. I reversed that charge too.
They never contacted me about any of it, though in all my attempts to contact them on the phone I got no one.
Buy.Com is a fucking scam, and I won't, regardless of your invitations, stop reminding people that they suck. They wouldn't be in business if things didn't go right some of the time. But when things go wrong, they go REALLY fucking wrong.
@IrvCrapper: wait... you reversed the charge for BOTH books... and did you return either of them?
i have a feeling the answer is no.
that, my friend, is textbook (no pun intended) stealing.
you agreed to buy one hardcover book. they shipped you a paperback. insist on your money back, return the book, and chargeback, that's justifiable. they sent you the proper book, they have fulfilled their part of the deal... unless there is a justifiable reason to return the "proper" book, but you should return it, not chargeback.
inappropriate use of chargebacks is what drives retailers and other business owners to despise them
@Gstein:
You are wrong.
1) I ordered a hardcover. Then sent a paperback. I tried to resolve this with Buy.com, and they never actually investigated my claim. They ignored it. Not until I harassed them, did they claim they investigated it (without talking to me), claiming that they sided with themselves. As such, they charged me for something I didn't order, and then failed to resolve it with the customer. At that point, I used my credit card to resolve the matter. They are contacted by the credit card company. My credit card was ignored by Buy.com, and they sided with me, reversing the charges.
2) Later, they sent me the same book in hardcover. They made an unauthorized charge to my card. My book. I kept the book on my desk for a year waiting for them to contact me or to dispute the chargeback with my credit card. They never did.
So, you are wrong. And Buy.com is a fucking mess.

BEWARE - there is another Buy.Com "Deal" posted.
Buy.Com will RIP YOU OFF!
