Here we go Again: Sexy Child Costumes hit Amazon

63987 views

After already putting up 'Sexy tween' clothing, it looks like Amazon has made another misstep in their categorizing- the 'Sexy French Maid' found its way into the "Office Products/Children" section.

The costume itself seems fairly innocuous if it were categorized correctly. But certain phrases creep me out in this context, specifically:

Technical Details

* Made with the Best Quality Material with your child in mind.
* Top Quality Children's Item.

Product Description
This sexy 'French Maid' includes: minni dress with marabou trim, pink satin apron, garter, wrist bands and marabou headband. Very stunning!

It gets even creepier when you look at the 'related discussions' at the bottom. Who categorizes these things, anyway?

Amazon.com: French Maid Pink Teen [Amazon]

The "office products/children" section? I'm call intentional shenanigans on this one.

user-pic

I'm sorry but is there an actual distinction between "teen" and "children" on Amazon?

The title does say Teen, but it shows up in the children section? I guess that's possible if teen/children are the same category.

user-pic

Amazon should look through their staff for pedophiles.

You would think they'd be more careful about this kind of stuff. Marketing a CHILD's costume SEXY is just oh so wrong.

What's next? Sexy toddler clothing?

user-pic

Mistake, or tacit cultural admission?

user-pic

@OmniZero: Ok so it's for teens and not children. Still a little bad, but remember that kids use that term for each other and girls are always looking for clothes that make them "sexy" to attract those football boys. It's all about the target demographic.

user-pic

While Amazon should be doing some policing here, It's not completely their fault. Amazon is an open selling platform, somewhat like eBay. Any company can add new items to Amazon's catalog. If you look closely, this item is being sold by UnbeatableSale, Inc., not Amazon.

If you want to point fingers, they should be directed at UnbeatableSale.

user-pic

I'm working in the wrong office.

user-pic

@Jeff Rapp: It is an open selling platform, but so is eBay. They police it quite well there. A guy just got stopped from selling his soul on eBay. I'm sure there are other incidents of things being stopped from selling too. They also raise a stink when it is mis-categorized.

user-pic

@OmniZero: Nothing says sexy like a low-cut T-shirt with some sweatpants, with manufactured Gerber Sweet Potato stains on them. That's their next big thing, count on it.

user-pic

First to review - Chris Hansen.

user-pic

I love (LOVE) the google ads that display in the comments section for this article.

Cosplay = sexy. It's just the way it is.

'scuse me while I get a sexy burlap sack costume.

user-pic

Sorry... not naughty enough. THIS is what I want my child to wear. Without Bratz around to show my kids what's what, thank god for Amazon!

user-pic

@unobservant: I mean, do what Jasmine did and send an email to the vendor. Do what everyone else did and tag the item as inappropriate and give one-star reviews. They'll get the message.

user-pic

@unobservant: Exactly. While Amazon should get busy removing this from their site, people should let the seller know that this is totally unacceptable.

user-pic

Man, I don't even need to rely on breaking the Wal-Mart Canada site anymore. Amazon just posts up all the funny stuff for me!

user-pic

@OmniZero: First, most companies provide the product descriptions to Amazon and they get loaded into a database. It's not like there's some Amazon guy writing this up. Or even that many people looking it over.
.
Second. Sexiness sells to teens. Haloween for a teenage girl is the excuse to act sexy without being labelled a slut. And this one isn't that bad from the looks.
.
Third. Sexiness sells to tweens, too. They look at all of the media and they want to join in the endless party that all the cute rich girls on TV are having. Look at the success of Bratz vs. Barbie. A lot of companies will market to that. See point #1.
.
Fourth. This is not politically correct, but throughout most of history teens were considered sexy. Women were married off shortly after they started menstruating, and sometiems before. Only an undesirable woman would be unmarried at 18. 20th century culture has created and prolonged adolesence and the idea that people are supposed to be completely nonsexual until their 18th birthday. Biology causes most people to begin to be interested in sex around puberty. This dichotomy creates a lot of social friction.

user-pic

@Miguel Valdespino: Another thing I want to add to your list is that the modeling industry and society in general has put such a strong emphasis on looking young. Creams to remove wrinkles, airbrushing, the desire to look thin/tiny. All these are things that make them look like teenagers even though they're in their mid 20s. I believe that causes many problems.

user-pic

This is wrong. But it's today's culture!
Take a look at any school - it's filled with teenagers dressing like this. Parent's don't seem to care anymore either.

Tell a kid what he or she can't wear to school, and the parents sue the entire school disctrict, saying it's freedom of expression.

user-pic

Product Dimensions: 8 pounds
Shipping Weight: 1.5 pounds

There's your problem. They apparently start with a modest, full-length sleeved dress made of 3 layers of heavyweight polyester and completely cut it to pieces. You get what's left: Skanktastic!

user-pic

Poo. I can no longer post reviews without having made a purchase, and the purchases on my amazon.ca account don't qualify. It's up to my American brethren to accept the mission! 10 customers have tagged it as "inappropriate for children" so far, but no reviews yet!

Send the message! Let's create a "Mass Effect"!

user-pic

@BlondeGrlz is having a BlondeBoyz!: No, see it's all a set-up by the local police. You think you're buying a sexy children's costume, but then it will be delivered by an officer who will also bring along some handcuffs and a Miranda warning.

Just another way to fight crime, really.

user-pic

@unobservant:

Good god, that is much naughtier, you're right.

user-pic

She looks like she's 18. If she were smoking a cigarette, I think I'd have a good cause for plausible denial.

Seriously though...Amazon can't build themselves a product filter that checks for "child" & "sexy" in the same product listing? They just don't belong together...

user-pic

@lalaland13: How about Chris Hanson? Can he deliver it?

On a weird side note, I always wanted to see someone show up to the To Catch A Predator house, and when Chris Hanson pops out, rip off his shirt and either have a)I heart Chris Hanson written on his chest, or b) wearing a crudely printed t-shirt with Chris's face on it and then proceed to go on and on about how he wanted to meet him for so long and then ask for an autograph.

user-pic

@TruthAndTheory: I'll grant that some teenagers dress provocatively in some schools, but show me a school where kids actually dress in sexy French maid or Naughty Nurse costumes.

I'd also be interested to see an actual report of a real lawsuit where parents sued a school so their kid could dress like a fantasy hoe.

user-pic

@Jeff Rapp: This stuff gets added quicker than staff could moderate. Ebay doesn't do a great job either, it's just more obvious the content is 3rd party, so it's ignored.

Odds are the seller didn't do it intentionally either. Some data entry clerk saw keyword "maid" and pulled up the typical "sexy clothing description". Not realizing the full description was for kids clothing.

Same goes for product images. That's why sometimes they don't match very well.

user-pic

Anyone else notice it's been tagged pedobear?

user-pic

@unobservant: did you notice there is a used one for sale? It says it's size 7 - 9, is that childrens or teens? either way, my daughters would not have been allowed to wear that

user-pic

WTF is wrong with these people? Sexy Teen Nurse, Sexy Teen French Maid?

user-pic

@admiral_stabbin: Plausible deniability on soliciting an underage minor for sex claim? Unlikely, even cases were the under-18 was using a fake ID the results have tended towards, "You should have known better."

user-pic

I have a pretty easy solution: don't buy this stuff. I would hope the demographic targeted by this kind of thing doesn't have the ability to buy things off Amazon without a parent's help.

If you ignore it, it will die.

user-pic

@timsgm1418: USED fetish wear? Sounds like someone's in for a gift that keeps on giving!

user-pic

@Miguel Valdespino: All very good points.

The fourth point, of course, gives parents room to say "well I don't agree with the way things used to be, I don't want my young teen daughter engaging in sex or sexual behavior". This is a fine stance to have, but parents forget about your first three points.

The company has a right to market its products however it sees fit, so long as it is legal. If enough people respond negatively to that marketing, it won't work and the product will be cut or the business will die. But to claim a company should not be allowed to do something like this is to miss the point entirely.

user-pic

Ariel Levy warned us about the teen who would exalt Paris Hilton and eventually learn to objectify herself with no direct male pressures. Check out the book Female Chuvanist Pigs.
But we all go to company/college parties and see it...
I mean if anything a Halloween party ,year after year, has only grown further away from the charming and innocent side of childhood hedonism and more towards what seems a Elysium to showcase the varying levels of sexual desirability played out through childhood fantasies and costumes and highlighting only the very meanest truths in an age of Ageism.

Set an example for your daughter. Be a carrot for once. NOT a 'Sexy' Carrot.

user-pic

We're a society that glorifies sexuality in TV and movies and the internet, then tries to ruthlessly suppress it in our kids. Is it any wonder we and they are a bit confused?

user-pic

Conveniently, the same retailer also sells this (http://www.amazon.com/Morris-Costume-Mary/dp/B000M673IO/ref=sr_1_22?ie=UTF8&s=office-products&qid=1229461403&sr=1-22), so you can buy your whole madonna-whore spectrum at one time!

Note in the details that this is also a "Top Quality Children's Item."

user-pic

This is clearly being sold by UnbeatableSales, Inc. Obviously they made the error. Why don't we blame the people who are actually at fault, here?

user-pic

@exkon: most teens are under 18, where the definition between child and adult is made.

user-pic

@queenlizzie: I assume you are talking about the parents who would buy this crap for their kids? They are the ones at fault.

UnbeatableSales is just trying to sell a product. If their marketing does not work, they will fail. Either way, they are not "at fault" here, since they have done nothing illegal.

user-pic

I'm pretty sure I have received no less than five emails today with the subject "French Maid Pink Teen".

Besides... 18 and 19 are "Teen". Why can't 18 and 19 year-olds be "sexy" ? Isn't the majority of porn culture based off the fact that dirty old men want 18-year-old girls? No one is saying you have to put this outfit on your 13-year-old.

user-pic

The original link is now dead. However, you can still find the costume at this new link:

Thanks again, Amazon. I was worried that my 10yo who purchased the sexy striped outfit last week would not have any sexy clothes for when she turned 13. With the economy the way it is, I cannot afford college and my little girl is going to be responsible for her own tuition. As expensive as school is nowadays, she will need this French Maid uniform. And thanks too for suggesting the Sheer Garter Belt Panty hose. The fishnet stockings included with this item just aren't sexy enough, although the choker is. Thanks to Amazon for continuing to offer sexy clothes for children! Now my 13yo will be the sexiest teenager on the playground! I'm glad you ignored all of those whiners last week that complained about your promoting hot fashion for little girls.

user-pic

If your tween can't get the French maid costume, the "Sexy Tween Prisoner" costume is still available at Amazon:

user-pic

Oops, I missed this one
[www.amazon.com]

Search on Amazon for for "French Maid Child Party Outfit Sexy Costume"

user-pic

@OmniZero: His soul. How do I send you my soul? Organs don't sell.

But if I want to sell a sexy whatever, no one's gonna cancel that.

No one's selling their liver/soul/etc. on amazon either. Equal polciing!
