Here's something to ponder over the Holidays... And I'd actaully be curious if anyone has a real answer...
We say "Merry Christmas" (at least, in the United States)
but everything else is "Happy"
Happy Chanukah
Happy New Year
Happy Holidays
Happy Birthday
etc
So why is Chrismas, "Merry Christmas" and not "Happy Christmas" (like it is in Europe)
Anwyay.... Happy Christmas everyone!
Merry Christmas!
I want to use this post to say that this is a great site, and I visit it several times a day. I work in customer service, and I like to remind myself of both sides of the coin (by reading this, and notalwaysright).
This site keeps me up to date on how to be an informed consumer, as well as remind me how going the extra mile in my job IS appreciated....and not doing so could land my company here!
@Dooley: Wikipedia has an explanation (don't they always?) which I don't feel capable of summarizing. Dickens seems to have had some influence, though. It's an interesting topic.
@Dooley: I asked my british friend this, and he said they say both.
Its possible that it stems from Yule (which is why christmas is in the winter anyway). One wouldn't say Happy Yule.
@Dooley: Well, just so you know - I wish you a:
- Merry Christmas
- Happy Hannukah
- Rockin' Ramadan
- Tip-Top Tet
- Super Solstice
- Krazy Kwanzaa
- Festive Festivus (for the rest of us)
and a "Season's Non-Denominational Greetings" as well!
@Dooley: Actually, in my home we DO say Happy Yule. Along with Merry Yule, and Joyous Yule. There are no hard and fast rules to wishing someone else good tidings.
Missed Festivus by one day (It was yesterday, Dec. 23rd) but I do thank you all for your kind greetings! and wish a joyful holiday to everyone!
@Trai_Dep: And Carey & Chris, if you're lurking, Merry Merry to you as well!
Thanks Ben, Roz and Meg for hanging in there, and toughing out a very "interesting" last couple of months!
And, Cap't Duvel Moneycats. Of COURSE!

Happy Christmas, and a Merry New Year!!!
