Consumerist Has Been Condensed
You may have noticed that Consumerist's new condensed view is now live. If you like it, good. If you don't, feel free to switch back to the old view.
To do this, from the new "View" menu, choose "Expanded."

Is there ANY way to "condense" the stuff at the top of the page.
I come to consumerist to read the stories.... but on every page I have to scroll down just to find the stories.
Would love to see:
1. "condense" or remove the top "ads" for the stories I'm about to read anyway.
2. Move those "ads" to the right hand side of the screen (or bottom of the page - so those who like them can then scroll down to see them)
@katieoh: it's right next to the time the story was posted. Unless there's another little clock that I don't know of.
@coan_net: yeah, it's a little funny that "consumerist has been condensed.... but we still take up nearly half of the space above-the-scroll to display 6 stories you read 5 hours ago".
Ugly. I'd actually love to see if any of the Gawker sites could manage to keep the same design and layout for 24 hours. First the links to other sites are on the left. Then they're on the bottom. First there's "Next" for paging. Then there's numbers for paging. It's not even consistent across the many sites.
@coan_net: This. Will. Not. Happen. Ads are what is paying for Consumerist to exist. If they move the ads to a place where no one reads them, then companies will not buy ads, and there will be no more Consumerist. This is like the complaints about ad pages in magazines. What do you think is paying for the writers and photographers and production and printing and mailing and editorial salaries and--don't forget--stockholder profits? $20-a-year subs? This is the reality of the market. I hate ads, too, but it's what pays the bills and supports the editorial content.
@GirlCat: Crap. I am so sorry--I didn't read your post closely. You meant "ads" for stories, not regular ads. I apologize!
@I work as a meth lab technician:
They would be more successful with the expanded version. If I see twice as many stories on one pageload of ads, it's probably not as effective. But if they double the ads, then it's a lose lose situation.
@GirlCat: Yes, when I say "ads" - I mean the short little advertisment showing the SAME STORIES THAT ARE RIGHT BELOW. (not actual advertisment - that I would understand)
I mean I would guess 99% of the people who come to this site come to read the stories - so I don't understand why they have to take up 1/3 of the page to show quick highlights of the stores that are RIGHT BELOW??? I mean I most users are here for the stories - there is no reason to try to "hook" the user into reading the stories.... again, isn't that why most come to the site anyway?
It doesn't care when I click "Expanded". :(
...On second look, it's not as bad as I thought. I thought it was hiding pictures for some stories, but I see now that there are just more stories than I thought without pictures.
Why is the "views" image a tear drop? Does Consumerist irritate the eyes, or just make you cry?
@CharlesjP: i was going to ask, but since i RSS and couldn't figure out what Meg was talking about, i'll just go on happily.
@Meg Marco: I can deal with Consumerist being condensed. I CANNOT deal with Consumerist being sold.
Baby, please don't go! :(

I likes it. Very organized.
