Academic and New York Times blogger Stanley Fish kicks off nominations for Worst Company in America 2009 with his account of frustrations—both consumer and grammatical—with AT&T.

This is a test using rich text formatting and html links. It's the generic "company" ad that should appear on all posts with the Company category if they don't have an ad attached to a specific company.

I don't know...my father does the same thing every year when he closes up his house in Florida and goes to Maine, and then the reverse. It takes him about 10 minutes on the phone with AT&T and there's never been a problem.

Maybe it is because Dad is easygoing, doesn't have a college degree, and treats people nice.

I hate it when a customer service rep says "I'm sorry that you feel that way". That must be written down in a manual somewhere because they all say it. It's as if they are trying to deflect the blame from the company and onto the customer. It's all my fault because I feel angry over being screwed over or because the company made a mistake. The bottom line is that customer service at most large companies sucks. As long as there are contracts and other tactics that keep customers tied to these companies, they have no incentive to change. Instead, they blame us for feeling angry. It's pathetic.

My nomination for worst company of the year - actually, worst company of the last two centuries - is General Motors. After a dedicated, covert campaign to destroy America's urban transit systems, a dedicated, overt campaign to build millions of miles of highways (if you build it, they will buy), selling products of ever declining quality and all but destroying the environment, neighborhoods and cities of this country, no company anywhere tops GM for sheer destruction in the name of profit. And now they want huge piles of taxpayer money to compensate for their gross mismanagement and inability to compete by making a quality product. GM has done more harm to America than any armed foe could have dreamed.

@SebastianKaplah:
I agree that we shouldn't be giving them bailout money but, the rest of what you said is just idiocy! When you move out of your mom's basement, get a job and, support yourself before you turn 40, you might stop believing all of that liberal crap you just spewed.
