$99 Walmart iPhone Actually Normal-Priced

12416 views

We are so late to telling you this but felt obligated anyway: The $99 Walmart iPhone rumor is just that. That's too bad, it would've been really funny. [Engadget]

This is a test using rich text formatting and html links. It's the generic "company" ad that should appear on all posts with the Company category if they don't have an ad attached to a specific company.

What cracks me up is the purported memo says "each store must sell five iPhones" as part of the "associates only" pilot program. Yes, since Wal-Mart associates have plenty of money to burn on iPhones.

Its been out for awhile that the 3G wouldn't be $99 but there is some speculation now that it isn't as untrue as previously though.

There is rumblings of a iPhone nano and some are saying that is where talk of the $99 iPhone started and it was just wrongly attributed to Wal-Mart.

user-pic

Hey, but at least it will be 3 cents cheaper than any other store. Isn't that what they are all about? Lower prices?

user-pic

@tande04: Is that like the iPhone Shuffle that randomly calls different people?

user-pic

At the price you pay for service around here, $99 is the most you SHOULD pay.

user-pic

@SKURRY: Or the iPhone that just calls Feist?

user-pic

@lalaland13: They do apparently. One of my friends (known only thru the interwebs) works at Walmart and she has an HDTV a PS3 and a Wii, constantly buys games and DVD's.

She must sock away quite a savings to do it and her rent is cheap, but if you save wisely and don't have 8 kids to feed...

@Oranges w/ Cheese: Or all of her money goes to that sort of stuff. No vacations, Olive Garden is fine dining, etc. Not judging her, we all have different spending priorities. For example, I'd rather drive a Civic and have a smaller TV and go to Europe/Asia twice a year.

user-pic

@unobservant: I wouldn't mind having one of those.

user-pic

@ARP: Dude, all-you-can-eat salad and breadsticks. Neverending pasta bowl. Need I say more?

user-pic

They could price it at $999 and the fanboys would still jump all over it.

user-pic

@aaron8301: Wow dude, did you have that zinger loaded up ready to fire or did you actually think for a second about your shitpost?

user-pic

@tande04: The iPhone nano continues to be a stupid idea. Apple is not going to make a $99 iPhone when demand is still high for their $400 iPhone. You're just going to have to save your pennies.

user-pic

"normal-priced?"

Did you just coin that? Is that like "full price less $2?"

user-pic

@Oranges w/ Cheese: Perhaps she has mastered the art of leveraging corporate retail shrinkage for personal financial enrichment?

user-pic

Off topic I suppose, but perusing the comment board on the Engadget item makes me happier for the comment code and moderators here and around the Gawker dominion.

user-pic

@aaron8301:

They could price it at fucking $.99 and retarded anti-Apple zealots like yourself would still jump all over people that prefer Apple products over the alternatives.

user-pic

@lalaland13: Nice joke but when I worked there (last year when I was 18) several employees were just your regular teenager working at a job. I'd of gotten one, I spent thousands.

user-pic

@aaron8301: I'm glad to see such thoughtful posts from a "star commenter"

user-pic

@lowercase: At Engadget, the quality of posters is generally lower, and it's like the wild west - no law.

user-pic

@lalaland13: When you live in an area like I do, then yes, people do have enough money at Wal-Mart for an iPhone. A lot of the people at my store are students, someone who isn't the breadwinner working just for extra cash, and retired people who just need something to do. The problem is more that despite what Apple may think, not everyone wants an iPhone or are willing to switch carriers just to get an iPhone.

user-pic

@lalaland13: What about associates buying them for friends? Managers? Corporate employees?

Seems odd that this article is sourced from Engadget and not from this Dec. 8 Gizmodo posting: [gizmodo.com]
