Run Consumerist's Ads

3058 views

The Consumerist seeks an outside partner to run our ad inventory management and sales. With over 14 million pageviews per month, #29 on the Technorati top 100, a devoted readership, and frequent mainstream media mentions and appearances, it's a gangbusters opportunity for the right people at a reputable company that gets our readers. If you've got serious hustle, integrity, and imagination, contact Ben Popken at ben@consumerist.com.

An ad man with "integrity"? You'd be better off looking for an actual person.

user-pic

I don't mean to be a jerk, but wasn't one of the stated reasons that Consumerist needed to cut back that there would be no ads/ad revenue in the near future?

user-pic

@Git Em SteveDave loves this guy-->:

I was under the impression that they needed to scale back because they couldn't find companies willing to advertise here, (not a suprise) and were relying on AdWords, which is no way to make a living.

@Git Em SteveDave loves this guy-->: Apparently the way to increase ad revenue is to cut back on actual content, and just stuff more ads on the page.

And here I thought that quality content would increase page views and, accordingly, ad revenue.

user-pic

@Farquar: It's more of a question of the manpower available to get the advertisers, rather than a lack of advertiser interest.

user-pic

Okay, what companies can target the consumerist demographic? Certainly not retail establishments, unless they are really, really, really sure about the quality of their customer service and employees. They are bound to get a bad article otherwise.

Lawyers maybe. Y'know... "Call Q. Tip and Dan Whitey if you've been a victim of (Poisoning from tainted products/scam artists/yaddayadda)"

Personal finance/small business management tools seems like a good choice. Practically screams "consumerist reader" at the top of its lungs.

Any other ideas?

user-pic

@Ghede: Yeah, it's a tough sell. Every other ad will have to be from Zappos or a credit union. I can live with that, I guess.

user-pic

I applaud this - Consumerist is lacking in advertisements and I'm happy to support anything that keeps the site afloat (including the "sponsored posts").

user-pic

I have always been surpirsed at the lack of advertisements on this site but I also always prefer no advertisements. I was under the impression gawker just took the hit on Consumerist because they used it to cross promote their other sites. I'm not sure about everyone else, but I would have never visited or known about the other gawker sites if it wasn't for Consumerist.

At the risk of sounding conceeded, I know I could do this job and would love to apply but because I'm working the job I have now and going to school full-time there's no way. But I started in telemarketing and managed an office for a couple years, sold vacuums door to door for a couple of years and now have been selling cars for three years. I have a great natural phone voice, and do well in person even in front of crowds. Hustle is what I'm all about. I still find time to make about 40k per year selling cars while I'm in school. Another reason I couldn't take this job even if it was offered to me as it probably doesn't pay as much. Unless there is a commission or bonus opportunity. The job does sound fun though and would look good on a resume. Despite not being able to take the job (if it was offered) I still want to know more, like hours and pay (estimated). what did the last guy to do this job make and things like that. If you couldn't tell I've been lied to in interviews so that I would take the job only to find out not one person has ever made the money they are claiming is possible to make.

FREE CREDIT REPORT DOT COM would be the perfect match.

user-pic

@ninjatoddler:
Maybe we can also get Walmart and Circuit City to advertise on here.

user-pic

I posted some suggestions in the first thread about the cutbacks. Any company who is featured in Above and Beyond would be good. Sprint has repeatedly gone out of its way to resolve issues posted here, and as a result, my image of them has greatly improved. What about Consumer Reports? legit Debt Consolidation companies? Are there any credit unions that advertise? There are other services that are touted in various articles as well. Carfax, maybe? Google Checkout? The web based companies that would revel in Consumerist's anti Circuit City/Best Buy articles? What about those discount travel sites that were just featured? Without posting politically biased articles, an ad agency could have sought advertising from like minded candidates. Ralph Nader, anyone? After an article about how to cut your energy costs, how about ads for a company that sells insulation or solar cells, or installs geothermal heat systems? Just scroll through a few articles, and all kinds of ideas come to mind.

Now the real question is, does it have to be an experienced company, or can it be done by a loyal reader with an open mind and lots of time from having been laid off?

user-pic

And don't forget that they just cut their staff in half by laying off 50% of their writers, while devoting money to people who police the comments! So, they should have money to pay the ad staff - which should help compromise the editorial integrity of the site.

Yes, please help with advertising here.

user-pic

@Farquar: I'd have thought it a perfect place for Circuit City to advertise. Right in the heartland of their customer base - which might explain a lot.

user-pic

Put all the ads you want, I have Firefox with plenty of add-ons to block them all!

Go Firefox!

user-pic

Ben, Email me. I will do it. I have the time and I know what to do.

@jyindc: Or LL Bean or maybe Netflix.. and that company that made the fancy insulated coffee cup.

user-pic

I think that any company that tried to do well by its customers would be proud to advertise here. No one's perfect, and few here expect that. But we expect them to try, which shouldn't be too much to ask, right?
(gulp)

user-pic

Wow. Consumerist has gone so far downhill since I first started reading. Between the comments-police existing for apparently the sole purpose of removing comments that are unflattering to the site, failing to make any response to appropriately-directed and professional complaints about offensive speech, and now soliciting bias-inducing ads and sponsored posts for the site, it is a shell of what was once interesting or relevant.

user-pic

@Ben_Q2: I don't have a way to email you, send an email to ben@consumerist.com

user-pic

There are plenty of good companies out there that really do pride themselves on exceptional customer service and they should be proud to advertise here. Insurance companies (the good ones), Cell phone providers, shoot, even upcoming movies. A really creative advertiser could definetely bring home some bacon.

user-pic

altryan, do you know of a single cell phone company that hasn't had a "bad" story here in the past 6 months?
