Just What The Heck Is Halloween Egg Nog?
Christmas Creep is mutating. First, we were alerted to the existence of "Halloween Trees" that appear to grow out of a fake human skull and feature festive orange lights. Now, reader Courtney introduces us to "Halloween Egg Nog."
The photo was taken at HyVee grocery store in Kansas City, MO.

@madamdalriada: It's in a glass bottle. Any milk in glass bottles have deposits, too, so you'll return the bottle so they can wash/sterilize/reuse.
@madamdalriada: Because it comes in a glass bottle and you need to return the bottle to get your $1.00 back.
@madamdalriada: I was wondering the same thing. I don't have to put a deposit when I buy one of those big Starbucks Frappuccino...
@midwestkel: That's what I was thinking..I buy glass bottles all the time in KS, OK, and TX and don't have to pay anything extra. I have traveled to the east a bit but I didn't visit a grocery store.
@midwestkel: Well it's not a recycling deposit. It is done by the company itself, not the grocery store.
You know what - I saw that the other day at King Soopers and didn't think anything of it. It just got me wondering "what kind of Halloween party serves egg nog?"
I went to King Soopers again last night, the Halloween egg nog is on clearance, and the same cooler that had the egg nog is filled with every different variety of egg nog, including Silk soy egg nog.
@Kimaroo: Have you ever had pumpkin cheesecake? I imagine it's what heaven is like. Indescribably delicious, and the common price of admission is often a heart attack.
@MeSoHornsby: Honestly GOOD Egg Nog shouldnt taste like that. If your Egg Nog tastes like you blended up your breakfast from the IHOP, then your either buying store stuff that someone dumped booze into, or your making it wrong.
@BeeBoo: I saw a sign recently at Wawa advertising their egg nog. I didn't even give it thought until I saw this post.
@madamdalriada: i live in the midwest (chicago, and grew up in rural wisconsin, also have plenty of family in minnesota) and we do have deposits. look for oberweis products (milk, lemonade and related juices, and egg nog) and you have a deposit. they're crafty and build it into the price, though, so you only notice it if you actually read the bottle. last i checked, it was $0.85. check it out next time you see Oberweis products at the local grocery store. and after you're done reading it, put a bottle in your cart, you won't be disappointed.
@Kimaroo: I picked up some Pumkpin Spice soymilk nog-like substance and it was actually really good (with a generous splash of rum). Five or six people tried it this weekend at my house and liked it well enough.
I liken this to when Peeps (http://www.marshmallowpeeps.com/) were only an Easter treat. I looked forward to Easter for Peeps, Christmas for EggNog and Valentines Day for... well, I don't like those candy hearts, so I guess nothing there.
The problem with the Halloween EggNog or the Halloween Peeps is that is cheapens the special "this only comes once a year" value in it. Stores substitute nostalgia for perceived cash flow.
Apparently, it's working. I will still refuse to drink it until after Thanksgiving.
@madamdalriada: I just bought some Shatto root beer flavored milk in Olathe, KS for 1.77 and there was a 1.50 deposit on the fricken 16oz bottle.
@MeSoHornsby: What you didnt want to quote him about what egg nog really is? Elves make it but in this case apparently ghouls and goblins have gotten into the business.
@oyvader:
Seriously.
This just advances my plan to make spiced egg nog ice cream this year by a month or so.
@oyvader: Same, Christmas creep can never come too soon when there is eggnog involved. My first thought after reading the accompanying headline was, "WHAT?! WHERE?!"
@Kimaroo: Last "holiday season" Bloom carried gingerbread eggnog. At first I was horrified by the idea, but I bought some anyway and it was delicious. Seems like pumpkin flavored would just be minus the ginger and plus some nutmeg.
I'm so excited about eggnog now!

Egg nog is gross to begin with, I can only imagine this bring together the greatness that is pumpkin.
