A warning about the Microsoft software. You have to chose a university that you attend, of which there aren't many in the country. If your school is not listed, you have to jump through hoops in order to be "verified." In the end, you have the lovely choice of giving up your FULL NAME AND SSN#, or address and phone number. Fuck. That.
@blackmage439: I should have been more specific. There aren't many "partner" schools listed on the website. Good luck belonging to one that's actually listed on there.
And don't bother cheating; they verify your identity and enrollment status.
@blackmage439: If you are looking for server or development OSes from Microsoft and are a student, chances are that you are taking Computer Science or IT classes. Check with your prof and see if your school is a member of the MSDN-AA (Microsoft Developer Network - Academic Alliance). If your school is, you get a huge selection of OSes and other Microsoft products for free(sadly, Office was not included, at least a couple years ago when I last checked). The best part is that you do not have to give them all of your personal info, in addition to having a larger selection than this "Dreamspark" crap. For example, workstation OSes like XP Pro and Vista Business are free for personal use through MSDN-AA.
@blackmage439: You can send in your enrollment status, which I honestly don't know if that shows your SSN or not. You can fax it or mail it to them. Sure it's the slow boat to China method but if it works, and saves hundreds of dollars to get free software... I'll jump through a couple hoops.
@MurdockCamel: Thanks... I'm trying that as well. I downloaded both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions... when I tried to enter the key on the 64 bit version it would give a "windows setup has encountered an error and needs to be restarted". It wasn't BSOD'ing... the message was right below the key field. It's installing without the key now; we'll see what happens when it installs.

HITACHI Deskstar 7K1000 0A35155 1TB SATA 7200 RPM 32MB Hard Drive for *$119* after MIR. They must have changed the page this morning since Buxr still lists the deal.
