Amazon Lists Barack Obama Mask Under "Terrorist Costume"

17944 views

The LA Times says that Amazon.com had a mask depicting democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama listed under the search term "terrorist costume." The listing has since been pulled but the LA Times has a screengrab.

This has, of course, offended Sen. Obama's supporters, (and presumably, lots of other people as well) as it is, you know, offensive.

Perhaps for the sake of appearing bipartisan, the LA Times also noted the prices of several other political costumes for sale on Amazon.

For comparison purposes, a Hillary Clinton mask is going for only $6.95 (down from $12.99). Even with her 18 million votes. The Sarah Palin mask, however, is going for $25 (Deluxe versions cost 98 cents more, but it's eligible for free shipping).

The Joe Biden T-shirts and life-size cutouts (sorry, no mask) have been marked down. The John McCain page offers paper masks for 99 cents and a rubber one for $12.90 (marked down from $16.99).

Amazon.com listing had Barack Obama Halloween mask under 'terrorist' [LA Times] (Thanks, Everyone!!)

All politicians are terrorists, so what is the big deal?

user-pic

amazon tags are entered by reviewers, not amazon. this is a big-time non-story, despite the political hacks trying to make something out of it.

user-pic

bahahaha, i read that as "Arizona" first and i was like, "well, i'm not surprised..."

user-pic

This isn't Amazon's fault. Tags are entered by Amazon users, or in some cases by the original sellers. While I imagine they can come along and police major issues--as they will probably do at this point--there's no sense getting panties in a twist over this.

user-pic

I'm not sure why anyone would search for "terrorist constume"

My conclusion: Someone at LA Times went in, made the tags, then reported on it.

user-pic

@Triborough:

This man is cosidered the savior and the messiah and god in the media

user-pic

If the search has some kind of fuzzy logic, Obama and Osama are close enough to explain why it showed up. Of course, I'm sure there are people who don't think Osama is a terrorist, but you can please everyone.

user-pic

How dares they speak ill of our lord and god and savior we need to black list this site like our Lord Obama did to a small local news organization because they dared ask him a tough question!

Anyone even a nobody that questions our lord and savior will be investigated like that evil Joe the Plummer how dare he not humble himself and ask the savior a tough question!

What happened to the video of the kids worshipping our lord and savior the Obama Youth on Obama's site

+ Watch video

user-pic

Well, what better way to get in a cheap shot than to be a disgruntled McCain supporter with the job of adding items to Amazon's web site. I wonder how long it took from the time the ad went up, to the time the complaints started, to finally get the ad pulled?

user-pic

@Bladefist: I saw it on Reddit yesterday, not sure whey the LA Times post was put up but I do not think they would be the ones to do it. Probably some schmuck did it then told someone.

user-pic

@Pious_Augustus: Hence the ugly double standard, since they routinely sell items labeling white republican politicians as terrorist hellspawn.

If Obama were such a white knight, then why would people even get the least bit excited when he was called a terrorist?

user-pic

Why is it that any time there is a thread on any message board, there's always a douchenozzle commenter (or two) who chime in with this "lord and savior messiah" bullshit?

user-pic

@Bladefist: Because they wanted to dress up as a terrorist.

[media.www.dailypennsylvanian.com]

Tacky, imo.

user-pic

@Courteous_Gentleman: Even I, the official consumerist right wing nut job, does not think Obama is a terrorist. But I think some people think that because of his associations with Ayers, and some people still remember that photo of him in kenya or whatever, with the "terroristque" clothes on.

But the media/liberal side of the country does act as if he is a savior. And that not really Obamas fault. I'm sure he doesn't mind, because it will help him get elected. But the fact that a lot of people worship him and "look the other way" when negative things about him are found, is a bit scary, but out of his control.

user-pic

@Pious_Augustus: You must be talking about the reporter married to a McCain campaign staffer.

See the interesting thing about the internet and video is that you can get an unbiased video account of actual events.

You should give it a try. Or are you too much of a fascist to pay attention to reality? See what I did there? Is asking if you are a fascist a fair question? It sure is a tough question. Why are you afraid of the tough questions?

user-pic

So I went to the same search route that the captured search took (above) ... go to "Apparel & Accessories" and search for term "terrorist costume" and apparently the've fixed the page. Well, sort of. Now instead of showing a Barack Obama mask, it says it can't find any terrorist masks in Apparel, but helpfully suggests where you might:

Your search "terrorist costume" did not match any products in: Apparel
Related Searches: arab costume, terrorist.

user-pic

@ArgusRun: This is a route you dont want to take. Sure, there are a couple of news stations around the nation that are right wing. But I think everyone knows the majority of the media is in the tank for Obama. A lot of them have officially endorsed him. To argue against that is crazy.

And in the instance of the interview with Biden that was tough, I think that should be allowed. How come when we ask candidates tough questions, they get mad, and blacklist that station? I would love to see both candidates grilled until they cry.

user-pic

All of us go through rigorous interviews for our various jobs. And we have to give good answers or risk not getting hired. I bet if you put Obama/McCain into a typical interview for a job that us Joes would apply for, everyone would call it unfair.

oh noez, did they really just ask him to name his 3 biggest weaknesses? When he answered with something that had nothing to do with weaknesses, they asked again? oh noez!!!! That is so unfair. waaaaa

user-pic

Even with the fix in place, I find it offensive that "arab costume" is a related search for "terrorist costume".

user-pic

They got it wrong. It should read, "terrorist's friend."

user-pic

Wouldn't surprise me at all if the RNC was behind this. They'll seize on ANY opportunity to diseminate misinformation. It makes sense- especially after the mailing I received Saturady from them....
I guess when you've got no real appeal for the average American, you have to stoop to this crap....

user-pic

@humphrmi:

Nice. Maybe if we search for douche bag we'd get redneck costume out of it.

user-pic

@rellog: And the DNC is 100% truthful about McCain. Right?

user-pic

@Bladefist: Sigh... Most respectable news sources at least attempt to be impartial. But when you can look at a single reporter and compare her interviews with two different candidates, any form of bias is easier to determine. In the Biden case, he performed admirably in an interview that seemed one question short of "When did you stop beating your wife."

For the McCain camp or its supporters to complain about his reaction is ridiculous. Biden has given dozens of interviews to small town and national news sources. Palin has given a handful and has started limiting them to avowed Republican leaning venues. And all she does is complain about the rest of the Liberal, gotcha-question asking media. What's good for the goose and all that.

If you get to attack the liberal media for asking what newspapers she reads, or what supreme court cases she disagrees with, then we can say whatever we want about a reporter who asks a major party VP candidate is he is a Marxist and has a socialist agenda.

user-pic

@Pious_Augustus: As soon as JTP became a talking point for McCain, he became fair game for investigation. And, as it turns out, he's completely full of bullshit. But yeah, you know, poor him.

user-pic

@Cupajo: Because it's easier than making substantive arguments.

user-pic

@Bladefist:

They want to trick-or-treat around the airport... duh!

user-pic

@Bladefist: I think it's sad that people casually refer to Muslim garb as being terrorist-like. The amount of prejudice this election has uncovered is pretty remarkable.

user-pic

@ArgusRun: Well, I think the interview with Biden was obviously coming from a right winger. Just like the debates were all moderated by left wingers. It equals out. I think Biden did a good job. She came at him repeatedly, he defended it, and the interview ended. I don't see how that is bad? I respect him more for it!

user-pic

@tc4b: Well, and the scrutiny of him only seems intense because it's happened over a short period of time. Obama's been scrutinized a lot more closely than "Joe" the "Plumber", but it's happened over months, not weeks.

user-pic

@rellog: Ha. Hilarious! Yes the RNC obviously isn't busy working on the final week of the campaign or anything. They're spending their time tagging a stupid rubber mask on Amazon.

Right...........................................

user-pic

@rellog: you can't be for real. nobody is this dumb.

user-pic

@Orv: Not just that, but most people consider all Arabs or Muslims to be terrorist or extremist, but it's just not true. I would consider the Westborrow (sp?) Baptist Church to be extremist, but that doesn't mean all Christians are just like those asshats.

user-pic

I understand some terrorists were offended by this.

user-pic

@Bladefist: Isn't Halloween a time to dress up as something scary?

user-pic

I bet in the update it'll be listed under "muslim costume."

user-pic

@tc4b: Jesus will smite you for that!

user-pic

@Pious_Augustus: Ok, that was extremely disturbing. Even Obama supporters should be disturbed by that prostituting of our youth!

Kinda like when I see people at protest gatherings having their kids holding Pro-Life or Pro-Choice signs...

user-pic

@Bladefist: I may be voting for Obama in this election, but it drives me nuts to see the messiah complex built up around him. Even some of the most cynical people I know seem to unconditionally support him and think he can do no wrong. I don't even want to think about the number of people I've seen here in Chicago wearing shirts with "OBAMA" or his portrait in glitter, sequins, rhinestones, and who knows what else.

In the end, he's a human being and a politician, and how he might perform as the president is still an unknown at this point. For all we know, he could turn into The Smiler once he's in office.

user-pic

@cmdrsass: You'd be VERY SURPRISED what BOTH PARTIES would do.

Seriously.

user-pic

@Pious_Augustus: When I first heard of him and his marketing campaign I wasn't taken in. All I saw was a big phony who was trying to disguise the fact that he was just another in a long line of corrupt Chicago politicians. Not that his opponent is any better, but at least you know you are getting a political hack.

One of the root causes of the current economic problems is the Democrats. Another is the Republicans.

user-pic

@akacrash: No way. My money's on "Communist costume."

user-pic

On a bit off topic note, I'm really curious why people seem to be so scared of electing a Muslim for president in theory.

Are they not human beings? Are most of them not good family men and women, just like anyone else? Don't we have Christian terrorists, along with whole different bunch of ideologies that those bastards believe in too?

Of course, Obama is a Christian, but I'm really disappointed by both "real" and "fake" Americans trying to further polarize an already polarized country.

user-pic

Is the McCain mask listed under "Grouchy Old Warmonger" costumes? Because if it isn't, it ought to be.

user-pic

@dlynch: Exactly.

Although some people, like the seller there, are just plain stupid. What purpose does it serve to run around being patently offensive?

I almost wish it would've stayed up, so that I would have known who to e-mail my thoughts to.
