I thought that this time, there was supposed to be a set-in-stone end date of September 2. What gives?

I don't care what kind of discount GM workers get..they get to drive around Cadillac Cimarrons and Pontiac Azteks. GM should be paying them to drive that crap.

If I were the CEO of Advertising for GM, I wouldn't try to guzzy up some ad campaign with some employee discount gimmick. I'd have a campaign that says "Hey, we have an f'ing sale going on. Come buy our sh.t!. Great f'ing deals!".

Then I'd drink scotch out of ceramic coffee mugs all day until I was fired.

I think they finally discontinued that Cimarron a year or two ago. Ditto the Aztek.

I thought GM announced they were raising prices twice, once in Oct 07 and then in June 08. LOL!!!!!!!

The reason American cars are doing so bad is because of the gas prices. The big three new about the gas crisis and yet still produced massive SUVs because that's what most American consumers wanted. Now the American consumer wants fuel efficient vehicles and the cars on the lots right now are not what most people want they are screwed. Remember the electric car that GM had back in the late 90's and scrapped it because no one wanted them (so they say). Now they wish they didn't smash them to a pulp in the Arizona testing facility could of turned big profits. There is also a documentary on this called Who Killed the Electric Car.

@balthisar: Yeah, but I wouldn't be surprised if the rotting shells of a few Cimarrons are still way out in the back lot somewhere...Near the Fleetwood 8-6-4s

I've been eying up the G6 coupe, I think it looks pretty sharp. Now I have a little more time to think about it.

Gee, I wonder if a lot of people had a similar experience to mine. The only thing I will say is that someone from GM did ask to speak with me. I attempted to call them last monday and got no answer, and then I forgot about it. If my schedule lightens up I will try and call again and then maybe write about it. Of course this assumes there is no NDA.

GMs "employee" price is still above invoice. I guess it's good for people who don't know how to haggle.

user-pic

@pockygt: And I would suspect also over the ACTUAL employee price. After all, how would the general public know any different?

I sell VWs. I can't tell you how many poor folks who have come in with HUGE GM dogs they want to unload.

Apparently they'll loan money to anyone who can fog a mirror.

I had one poor woman who had a full tilt Suburban and had a commute of nearly 110 miles daily. She was paying more in fuel prices than I do monthly for my house payment.

She wanted a Jetta TDI. When it came down to the numbers, she was $37,000 upside down.

Her best bet was a chasm opening up in the earth and sucking the beast down or strategic fire.

I was listening to The Disciplined Investor and Horowitz brings up a good point: Why in the world do car companies make new cars every year?!

I won't consider buying a GM because it isn't a reliable product. Toyota is my brand.

I have a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix and I have yet to have a single problem with it. I had a 1993 Grand Prix that I only got rid of in 2005 because it started showing signs of transmission problems. It had 190,000 miles on it and it ran great. I will only purchase GM vehicles because in all, my family has had over a dozen of them and one - a GMC Envoy - had some problems (electrical).

If anyone is interested in this, the Chevy Malibu Hybrid qualifies for a nice discount. MSRP is around 21,000 (pre-discount is around 24,000). I am considering trading in my current car for one. Just in case anyone is in the market and is looking at hybrids.

I like the commercial that says "Toyota can't do this neither can Honda"

who are they kidding. Toyota and Honda make cheap reliable cars that get great gas millage.

My Corolla gets close to 35 MPG

and VW's are the suck. if i have to bring my wife's damn Beetle to the dealer one more time because of their crappy headlights and taillights I'll blow it up.

I bought my Saturn Vue a few years ago on a similar promotion, and still was able to haggle the price down further because they allowed me to see the actual invoice, which I knew how to read. Worked out well for me!

Corvair . Vega . Astre . Chevette . V-8-6-4 . Diesels made from gasoline engines. Cimmaron. Aztek. Cavalier . EV-1.

Is it any wonder that they have to have a couple of "employee price" sales per year to move this junk ?

I used to sell GM cars, and while I was doing so (in 2004-05) we had a similar sale, so I know what I'm talking about regarding this deal:

The "employee price" you get under this discount is set at a certain percentage over cost. That means there's still some profit in the car, so I wouldn't necessarily chalk this up to desperation discounting.

If you are a good negotiator and do your homework, you can actually pay less for a car walking off the street than if you "take advantage" of this sale. It used to really burn me as a salesman that customers wandering into the dealership could (and frequently DID) get cars for less than the "bottom line" employee price.

One central point never raised is "why do employee discounts still exist at GM? The airlines and banks (for the younger members we have Bert Lance from the Jimmy Carter era to partially thank for the elimination of bank loan preferences.) all did away with significant employee discounts. GM employees should buy GM cars out of loyalty, to set an example and hopefully keep ther jobs.

I just bought a 2009 Saturn Aura yesterday with this pormotion and I'm in love. I was set to purchase a Camry on Tuesday, but the GM employee on 2009 models and the fact that the Aura gets better Gas Mileage than the Camry was a real deal.

So far this car is amazing. i traded in my Accord which i thought was awesome, but this rides so much better.

user-pic

@linus:

Take a look at the facts, Linus. Toyota is having more relability problems than any other brand now. A ford scores better in quality these days. I read about the transmission issues in the Camry before buying my Aura which has had no recalls.

@schiff: Well considering that Monday was the Labor Day holiday, it's not too surprising no one answered. And no, GM doesn't work on Labor Day; the unions would stomp them.

Having once worked for a GM supplier, these discounts appear to be comparable to the supplier / employee discounts on a percentage basis. One big advantage to the consumer vs. employees is that for the employees the discount is a taxable benefit under IRS rules. That doesn't apply to discounts offered to the general public.
