ATT Data Network Down, Complain For Credits

3241 views

AT&T wireless is experiencing some kind of data outage in the Northeast, and if you call up and complain, you can get a $10-$20 credit (YMMV), Gizmodo reports. Let us know in the comments if you're an AT&T user experiencing data outages, where you're located, and if you have any luck snagging credits. If calling 611 from your phone doesn't work for ya, here is a variety of contact information to try.

AT&T Data Network Knocked Out in Northeast [Gizmodo]

This is a test using rich text formatting and html links. It's the generic "company" ad that should appear on all posts with the Company category if they don't have an ad attached to a specific company.

Good timing on this. I noticed earlier than my phone wasn't syncing with my Exchange server unless I connected over WIFI. I'm in Richmond, VA, so it isn't just confined to the NorthEast. I can give them a call to see what I get.

I freaked out last night when I didn't get 3G coverage and did a full reset. *Sigh*

Macrumors has been reporting on this as well, it's a very large issue, and here in Massachusetts there is no data. Support has told some people they were upgrading towers and data would be back "sometime today".

user-pic

No issues on a Blackberry and a Datacard in New York City, and New Jersey.

Maybe I'm just lucky.

It's ridiculous you should have to call to get a credit. It should be automatic. AT&T very well knows who is on the network, who has data plans, and who is therefore affected by the outage. Cable and other ISP providers do the same thing.

I've always wanted someone to go class action on an outage and force the providers to give automatic credits even to those who don't notice the outage. You pay for a service to be available whether you are using it or not.

user-pic

Wouldn't you know it, while I was on hold and playing around with the phone, it looks like everything started working here at least.

user-pic

I don't have a data plan, but I have access to data services in that old-fashioned per-kilobyte sort of way. I sent them an email (I'm at work) & I'll post again if I hear anything.

user-pic

After this article and the previous AT&T information about "the computer" it's pretty clear that skynet has become self aware.

Sarah Connor was too late!

I used to work for AT&T customer service and when this happened I would apologize and give the customer a credit, but some people would call and complain and I would look in the notes and see that they just got a credit and I would not give them another one. The service being down for a day doesn't mean you should be compensated for two months of service.

I like Canino's idea that AT&T should just give automatic credits.

I called last week to complain about the shoddy data service in general and sporadic outages, and managed to fight $25 out of the rep who was a complete douchebag.

He actually told me, "well, you're only paying $30 a month for data, so you can't expect it to be up all the time."

Really? ... REALLY?

user-pic

@goodcow:

If that's true and I pay $35 for u-verse service then I'd throw a fit.

user-pic

Just called customer service. The guy told me I don't have to pay for the service I can't use. I had to correct him that "I AM" paying for data plan on the iPhone and at&t is getting my money no matter what. So if at&t can't provide me the service, they should at least give me credit toward the bill. The guy was nice enough to give me $25 credit.

With 3G service sucking just about everywhere. They should not be charging people $30 a month for it in the first place. I wish I kept the old iPhone. It would have been just as good.

user-pic

Data is back up in the DC area. Had to reboot my iPhone, but now it is working.

user-pic

Looks like Data is back in Boston. No reboot needed

user-pic

No problems in the southeast. AT&T stayed on even during Fay and Gustav. Can't say the same about the electricity...

user-pic

I'm in Boston and have no data service. I called 611 (the # on the original post just has a recording) and had a very pleasant customer service experience. Randy, the CS agent, was extremely nice, did his due diligence, and gave me a $15 credit. He told me to power cycle my phone (3G iPhone) every couple of hours to see if data has returned.

user-pic

The credits will never be automatic, AT&T has to dole out less money when the onus is on the customers to get the credit than if it were automatic.

user-pic

It seems to be working now, in Maryland/DC area. I was also having a great deal of trouble with the App Store since yesterday afternoon. It had been either extremely slow or not connecting at all, with full 3G bars.

user-pic

here's a better tip... dial 611 from your cell, and it's free. AT&T doesn't charge you if you use the service dial number they provide, but they do charge if you use the 1-800 number on your cell.

user-pic

I got a Tilt and was fighting with it all morning during my breaks at work. I thought it might had been the new rom I just flashed until I bump into a coworker with a 8525 and he also had no data connection.

user-pic

My AT&T BlackBerry was down for most of yesterday evening, and the service is off/on today.

user-pic

I was in Northern VA and it wasn't working but I'm now in Southern MD and it's fine. :o( I should drive back to VA and complain.

user-pic

The bad news is that the rep told me that the outage is still in effect as of this post, with no specified ETA as to when the outage will be resolved. The good news is that I was able to get two $25 credits on my account for the two iPhone 3G's my wife and I have. I had her note it in my account.

user-pic

Ahhhh, so that's what it was. I thought that my iPhone was acting up or something. I had an outage from like 10-12, but before that it was working. Now, it is just fine right here in Philadelphia, PA.

user-pic

Haven't had service all day in NC. Called to complain as was told first that the CS Rep "was not aware of any problems today." I mentioned that I was reading all over the internet about problems and he said "Oh, some users are experiencing problems."

He told me that there is no ETA on a fix.
He told me that I could have a $1 credit.

His supervisor told me that they do not provide any credits more than $1/day of outage because their contract does not guarantee service. I told her that when I commit to a two-year data contract I think it's reasonable to expect service, just as they expect me to pay my bill every month even when it's an inconvenient month for me.

I stayed calm the whole time, as did she, even when I asked her how much my ETF would be. No phone (not even an iPhone) is worth the lousy coverage and crappy service of AT&T).

I called this morning when I was driving up 495 in MA after I noticed there was no data. CSR said there was an outage but did not offer a credit. It was back up by noon, so it's really not that big a deal. I'd really feel kind of weird asking for a credit, especially in the neighborhood of $20. Seriously, I pay $20/month for data on my iPhone, and 4 hours works out to about 12 cents total. I could see it being a problem if you were expecting an important email, but all I wanted to do was look up info on Basque nationalists, so not that big a deal.

user-pic

Just called and got a $50 (pretty sure he said fifty at least, maybe fifteen) credit (Washington, DC)

I've been having data problems with my EDGE iphone in Green Bay,Wi. However it worked the weekend I was in Milwaukee.
I keep getting 'not connected to internet' or 'server has stopped responding' errors and any app that uses data doesn't work.

So furstrated I went into an ATT corstore to see about moving to just a plain old phone and the guy after looking at my iphone and waiting 2 minutes for 'ebay.com' to load on safari (it never did despite 5 bars) just shurgged his shoulders and said there was nothing he could do. He suggested I send the phone to Apple or cancel. Well, since the phone worked flawlessly in Milwaukee Apple wouldn't have done anything since there is clearly not a hardware issue. So..I call CS to cancel and she offers me the option to switch to another non-iphone phone. EXACTLY the solution I went to the corstor to seek. Well,by that time I had already gotten a basic phone on my wifes account and I wasn't about to go cancel that line and deal with taking the phone back yadda yadda.
ANd as an FYI,she said there is a cheaper voice plan that isn't advertised. 200 anytime for 29.99. So,if you are using your iphone as a data device and don't need a ton of minutes..call up and request the cheaper plan.

I started having data issues when I installed 2.0 (it worked fine in GB prior to 2.0). I thought it was that but like I said the phone worked fine in Milwaukee.

I don't know...so frustrating.

user-pic

$15 after being offered $0.67. Be nice, polite and if they don't budge ask politely to speak with a supervisor. Everyone was very nice, but firm on the offers. Stick in there, I was on the phone for twenty minutes total.

user-pic

I'm with Fido or "rogers" and the 3g network seems to float in the mornings, some mornings it will be up and running no problem other mornings its running like what it was once like to experience dialup service.

user-pic

I've been having major issues with ATT on my iPhone today, and I'm in Oklahoma City.

user-pic

I thought this had something to do with my phone being dead since Saturday. Apparently we're talking cell phones, not land lines :(

user-pic

Yesterday, I was offered $1 for my lack of data and was told by a customer service supervisor (Dan Hodges) that $1 was what everyone was getting. After several back-and-forth conversations about this forum, I wound up with 25 rollover minutes. How magnanimous.

Worse, I was picked for a customer service survey at the start of the call and discovered after speaking with the supervisor that all calls that are transferred--in other words, EVERY call that goes to a supervisor--gets dropped from the survey system.

Aren't calls that go to a supervisor precisely the ones that need review and assessment the most?

user-pic

Easy. Iphone 3G data plan - $30.00/30(days)-$1.00 per day the service isn't working.

Unfortunately, nobody is going to be satisfied with a ONE DOLLAR CREDIT.

If you're on a family plan and you have standard data on a line, it's only 10.00. If a CSR offered you a 33 cent credit, you'd LOL even though that's exactly the value of the data you're paying for.
