ATT Data Network Down, Complain For Credits
AT&T wireless is experiencing some kind of data outage in the Northeast, and if you call up and complain, you can get a $10-$20 credit (YMMV), Gizmodo reports. Let us know in the comments if you're an AT&T user experiencing data outages, where you're located, and if you have any luck snagging credits. If calling 611 from your phone doesn't work for ya, here is a variety of contact information to try.
This is a test using rich text formatting and html links. It's the generic "company" ad that should appear on all posts with the Company category if they don't have an ad attached to a specific company.

It's ridiculous you should have to call to get a credit. It should be automatic. AT&T very well knows who is on the network, who has data plans, and who is therefore affected by the outage. Cable and other ISP providers do the same thing.
I've always wanted someone to go class action on an outage and force the providers to give automatic credits even to those who don't notice the outage. You pay for a service to be available whether you are using it or not.
I used to work for AT&T customer service and when this happened I would apologize and give the customer a credit, but some people would call and complain and I would look in the notes and see that they just got a credit and I would not give them another one. The service being down for a day doesn't mean you should be compensated for two months of service.
I like Canino's idea that AT&T should just give automatic credits.
Just called customer service. The guy told me I don't have to pay for the service I can't use. I had to correct him that "I AM" paying for data plan on the iPhone and at&t is getting my money no matter what. So if at&t can't provide me the service, they should at least give me credit toward the bill. The guy was nice enough to give me $25 credit.
With 3G service sucking just about everywhere. They should not be charging people $30 a month for it in the first place. I wish I kept the old iPhone. It would have been just as good.
I'm in Boston and have no data service. I called 611 (the # on the original post just has a recording) and had a very pleasant customer service experience. Randy, the CS agent, was extremely nice, did his due diligence, and gave me a $15 credit. He told me to power cycle my phone (3G iPhone) every couple of hours to see if data has returned.
Haven't had service all day in NC. Called to complain as was told first that the CS Rep "was not aware of any problems today." I mentioned that I was reading all over the internet about problems and he said "Oh, some users are experiencing problems."
He told me that there is no ETA on a fix.
He told me that I could have a $1 credit.
His supervisor told me that they do not provide any credits more than $1/day of outage because their contract does not guarantee service. I told her that when I commit to a two-year data contract I think it's reasonable to expect service, just as they expect me to pay my bill every month even when it's an inconvenient month for me.
I stayed calm the whole time, as did she, even when I asked her how much my ETF would be. No phone (not even an iPhone) is worth the lousy coverage and crappy service of AT&T).
I called this morning when I was driving up 495 in MA after I noticed there was no data. CSR said there was an outage but did not offer a credit. It was back up by noon, so it's really not that big a deal. I'd really feel kind of weird asking for a credit, especially in the neighborhood of $20. Seriously, I pay $20/month for data on my iPhone, and 4 hours works out to about 12 cents total. I could see it being a problem if you were expecting an important email, but all I wanted to do was look up info on Basque nationalists, so not that big a deal.
I've been having data problems with my EDGE iphone in Green Bay,Wi. However it worked the weekend I was in Milwaukee.
I keep getting 'not connected to internet' or 'server has stopped responding' errors and any app that uses data doesn't work.
So furstrated I went into an ATT corstore to see about moving to just a plain old phone and the guy after looking at my iphone and waiting 2 minutes for 'ebay.com' to load on safari (it never did despite 5 bars) just shurgged his shoulders and said there was nothing he could do. He suggested I send the phone to Apple or cancel. Well, since the phone worked flawlessly in Milwaukee Apple wouldn't have done anything since there is clearly not a hardware issue. So..I call CS to cancel and she offers me the option to switch to another non-iphone phone. EXACTLY the solution I went to the corstor to seek. Well,by that time I had already gotten a basic phone on my wifes account and I wasn't about to go cancel that line and deal with taking the phone back yadda yadda.
ANd as an FYI,she said there is a cheaper voice plan that isn't advertised. 200 anytime for 29.99. So,if you are using your iphone as a data device and don't need a ton of minutes..call up and request the cheaper plan.
I started having data issues when I installed 2.0 (it worked fine in GB prior to 2.0). I thought it was that but like I said the phone worked fine in Milwaukee.
I don't know...so frustrating.
Yesterday, I was offered $1 for my lack of data and was told by a customer service supervisor (Dan Hodges) that $1 was what everyone was getting. After several back-and-forth conversations about this forum, I wound up with 25 rollover minutes. How magnanimous.
Worse, I was picked for a customer service survey at the start of the call and discovered after speaking with the supervisor that all calls that are transferred--in other words, EVERY call that goes to a supervisor--gets dropped from the survey system.
Aren't calls that go to a supervisor precisely the ones that need review and assessment the most?
Easy. Iphone 3G data plan - $30.00/30(days)-$1.00 per day the service isn't working.
Unfortunately, nobody is going to be satisfied with a ONE DOLLAR CREDIT.
If you're on a family plan and you have standard data on a line, it's only 10.00. If a CSR offered you a 33 cent credit, you'd LOL even though that's exactly the value of the data you're paying for.

Good timing on this. I noticed earlier than my phone wasn't syncing with my Exchange server unless I connected over WIFI. I'm in Richmond, VA, so it isn't just confined to the NorthEast. I can give them a call to see what I get.
