Ok, puppies are on the "9 things you should not buy new" list?

I fully support adopting pound puppies and I have done so myself, but buying "used" puppies seems wrong... but funny.

@dragonvpm: I can see the next round of cold calls now.

"The warranty on your puppy is about to expire..."

@sir_eccles: "There has been a recall on your model year of puppy..."

I can heartily agree with the mention of toys. We have yard-full of Playskool toys (scooters, cars, little play house, basketball hoop, picnic table, etc) that we've bought used at garage sales and on craigslist.

Brand new, that stuff is *expensive*.

@sir_eccles: Hopefulluy those guys over at MAKE don't have any puppies, since their motto is "If you can't open it, you don't own it."

i'm sorry but "Games for consoles like the Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation can often be purchased used for half price." is just not true unless the game is really bad or has been out for a year or more.

At best you might get it for 5-10 bucks off the new price.

Also hasn't this story been here before?

Haha aww... used puppies. Cute. I generally just borrow mine. Also, something about this article reminded me of Sick Puppy by Carl Hiaasen (link to ebooks version)...

Anyone thinking the HSA thing is a good idea should first clear it with a qualified accountant. It's really just shuffling money around and presumes several big items like paying for health services today with post-tax dollars to get back pre-tax dollars later ( with interest ) is a good idea as well as presuming that you will eventually consume all the value in the account with uncovered insurance costs.

Really it seems like a stretch that has only limited use.

@snowmoon: I too read the HSA as a savings vehicle (for alot of highly paid people) and posted the following problem about people wanting to save receipts for 25 years until retirement to get money out "tax free":

A nice idea but your receipts will probably degrade prior to use if you intend to keep them for 25-30 years. I would recommend photocopying them or scanning them with some sort of penciled code number on the actual receipt so you can show the IRS that yellowing receipt with no printer toner on it 20 years from now. My understanding is that alot of the current receipts are thermally printed which means they are like the old thermal roll paper fax printers where the printing degrades quickly...

I have an issue with "Software and console games." being under 9 things you shouldn't buy new. Mainly because I don't like the way gamestop and ebgames do business. Buying games used video games is just pure profit for those two companies with no money going towards the developers. However, waiting to buy games on sale is a different story.
