As quietly as it came, the $10 “web convenience fee” Spirit levied for the favor they were doing you by letting you book online, has gone. The fee no longer appears in Spirit Airlines’ contract of carriage. A small victory for common sense, though they’ll probably just figure out a way to make it up somewhere else. How about $5 fee for takeoffs and landings?

Why not just raise all fares by 10 bucks and no one will know the difference?
But Ben, that fee already exists! It’s a $2.50 fee per each ‘enplanement’ on a trip, up to two legs. Hence, if you fly somewhere with one connection, then you contribute $10 to the TSA’s Stupid Rules fund.
Here’s a radical idea. Why doesn’t an airline make all the news–and get all the free advertising that goes with it–by announcing that they’ll be showing their fares as all-inclusive. If they advertises $390 roundtrip from Pittsburgh to Fort Myers, it will be $390 including airport charges, 911 security fees, taxes, two checked bags, and a cold beverage on the flight.
@pgh9fan:
that would be a PHENOMENAL idea, kind of like those all-inclusive resorts in the caribbean. i could see all the older folks-the ones who probably get taken advantage of with the sneaky rates-opting for this over other airlines in a second.
@pgh9fan:
You mean like how Southwest does it?
@basket548: Southwest’s rates don’t include fees… those tend to be in the area of $10/leg.
Well, yeah, I meant at the point where you check out the price includes everything mentioned.
@pgh9fan:
Because value hunting consumers (aka cheap) search only price and the honest vendor is hurt by not deceiving the public
@pgh9fan:
The reason Southwest does not include them is because the fees are not taxable. If the 9/11 fee was included in the ticket price, you would be paying sales tax on an extra $10. In other words, you buy your ticket then you pay a sales tax on the amount you payed for that ticket. The Government then tacks on the 9/11 fee and the local airport adds their PFC (Passenger Facility Charge), which is also not taxable. Southwest does a good job of explaining the two fees in plain English. [www.southwest.com]

watch them get no business
Because it’s not convenient if I have to pay $10.
