Don't Get Ripped Off By A Shingle Warranty
If you're not careful, a shingle warranty can leave you soaked. Shingle warranties usually only pay out when the shingles themselves are defective, and most shingle failures are due to improper installation. The shingles themselves are only 10-20% of a roofing job. Most of the costs are from labor. If your shingle warranty covers only the shingles themselves and not the warranty, the shingle warranty will only be worth a few hundred dollars. And watch out for prorated shingle warranties - their value may decline precipitously after the first few years. Learn more about shingle warranties and what to watch out at The Roofery.

My parents had deffective shingles put on the house they built in 1985. Around 1995ish the defect notice was sent out by the company and my parents had the roof inspected. It turns out the shingles were really bad and so was most of the structure of the roof. The company provided the new shingles free of charge, however, my parents had to pay a contractor almost $5000 for the old one to be ripped off, the plywood underneath too be replaced, and the new one installed properly.
@solareclipse2: That is what I got done with mine. They warrantied their work for 20 years, the shingles were 30. They have been in business for 50+ years already and they were close to the best price in town. How could I say no? This is good advice though.
@oneliketadow: That was what I had in mind to comment on as well. The warranty covers the warranty?
