Man Shoots Lawnmower With Sawed-Off Shotgun, Voids Warranty

Not only is it illegal to shoot your lawnmower with a sawed-off shotgun, it’s illegal to own a sawed-off shotgun. Apparently, no one bothered to share this information with Keith Walendowski of Milwaukee, WI.

From the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel:

“I’ll tell you the truth,” a criminal complaint quotes an apparently inebriated Keith Walendowski. “I got pissed because my lawn mower wouldn’t start, so I got my shotgun and shot it.

“I can do that. It’s my lawn mower and my yard, so I can shoot it if I want,” Walendowski told police.

Well, no. Anyway, even if shooting your lawnmower is legal in your area, its certainly not recommended.

Dick Wagner of Wagner’s Garden Mart, 6075 N. Green Bay Ave., said shooting the mower didn’t help Walendowski’s odds of getting it repaired.

“Anything not factory recommended would void the warranty,” he said.

Yep, it sure will, Dick.

    Good grief! This guy sounds like a ticking time bomb! Thank God he took his anger out on a lawnmower, now they can toss him in the looney bin kthxbai

    CLASSY!

  3. RabbitDinner says:

    And it’s not illegal to saw off a shotgun per se, I think as long as the barrel is at least 18 inches. But that’s irrelevant.

  4. dorianh49 says:

    Looks like a reasonable, responsible consumer to me. If I was looking for a babysitter, I’d trust him on his picture alone.

  5. palookapalooza says:

    Nice Earl Long impersonation. What next, biting a legislator during a filibuster?

  6. Angryrider says:

    I’m for the OP, that Lawnmover was going to kill him. It was better he shot it.
    I though the recent Supreme Court decision allowed us to have sawed off shotguns. Them cops are tramping on our constitutional rights to own a gun!

    Everything I need to know in life, I learned from Dead Kennedys songs.

    Well, maybe not everything, but all about lawnmower shooting, at least…

    “Some clown in Sacramento was dragged into court. He
    shot his lawnmower It disobeyed, it wouldn’t start.
    Might makes right, it’s the American way. They
    fined him $60 and sent him on his way

    You know, some people don’t take no shit.
    Maybe if they did they’d have half a brain left.”

    Actually, no it won’t.

    Hopefully that’s the end of gun ownership for this guy. I imagine gun ownership by the mentally unstable is prohibited

  12. CrumpsBrother says:

    Small world. Dick Wagner charged me $17.70 for this lawnmower part yesterday ([www.mowpart.com]). Yeah, that’s right – less than $8 bucks online. A-hole.

    I was going to complain to Consumerist, but I knew nobody would give a shit. I should have just shot my lawnmover like they do on the South side.

  13. wgrune says:

    @xwildebeestx:

    “Yes, Pete, it is. In fact , it’s pronounced “mill-e-wah-que” which is Algonquin for “the good land.”

  14. xwildebeestx says:

    I was not aware of that.

  15. Johnyalamo says:

    Come on! I mean even Elvis got to shoot his own televisions. This guy did nothing wrong.

  16. MountainCop says:

    Well, at least someone took it ‘very seriously’ :D

    And yes, this means the end of his gun ownership – never mind the mental aspect – possession of a restricted weapon (a sawed-off shotgun) without the appropriate ATF stamp is a federal felony offense.

  17. nursetim says:

    I’m having problems with my push mower, so now I know what not to do to it. You learn something new here everyday.

  18. He’s lucky PETA doesn’t advocate for lawnmowers.

  19. donkeyjote says:

    @nursetim: Cement + rope + lake. Surely that’s legal.

    cool

    but did we really need to the Dick lawnmower expert ?
    looks fake and stupid

  22. stacye says:

    I could understand if this guy lived somewhere like Texas, but MILWAUKEE?!? Give me a break.

    You try starting a lawn mower in Texas during a summer heatwave. After about the 25th pull, you’d be grabbing your shotgun, too!

    @xwildebeestx: Shop Smart. Shop S-Mart.

  23. donkeyjote says:

    @stacye: Thats when you break out the power drill to start the engine.

  24. LogicalOne says:

    Sounds like the start of another lawsuit. One which will result in yet another warning sticker to be placed on all new lawnmowers: “Warning: Shooting this lawnmower will void its warranty.” They’ll place it next to the sticker that says, “Do not use this lawnmower as a hedge clipper.”

  25. xwildebeestx says:

    @stacye: Officer, I’m perfectly fine to drive…. brbagrargabarggrggfff.

  28. Sounds like the character in the movie “The Straight Story”.

    But I think he lived in Iowa

  29. @The Rude Bellman:
    Or Karl Childers from “Sling Blade”. Remember how much of a wiz he was with lawmowers? That part when the lawn mower would’nt start he just looks it over and say “Mmm, It ain’t got no gas”. That Karl, what a card!

    I love the photo.

  31. SuperJdynamite says:

    “I imagine gun ownership by the mentally unstable is prohibited”

    Ever since Reagan decided that mentally unstable people shouldn’t be regulated by big government they can pretty much do whatever they want.

  32. RabbitDinner says:

    @SuperJdynamite: That’s odd, considering the man who attempted to assassinate Reagan was found not guilty due to insanity.

  33. The world would be less interesting without people like Keith in it.

  34. B says:

    @PhilVillarreal: Maybe, but PETL is going to be all over this guy.

  35. Trai_Dep says:

    I’m so glad the barest of majorities of Supreme Court justices feel that every idiot’s entitled to a gun. Excellent!
    Now can he go “discipline” Scalia’s lawn mower? Please?

  36. Trai_Dep says:

    The thing is, if you let the lawnmower get lippy, pretty soon the weed whacker gets out of line, then the leaf blower starts agitating for weekends off. The next thing you know, SkyNet has initiated thermonuclear Armageddon.
    He’s John Conner, in other words, so people, show some freaken gratitude!

  37. SinisterMatt says:

    @Trai_Dep: That’s awesome. I LOL’d.

    I suppose this is one time when Ben and Co. will permit us to blame the consumer without risking getting banned, eh? Unless you consider the lawnmower the victim.

    Cheers!

  38. stinerman says:

    @Trai_Dep:

    Seeing as owning the weapon was illegal to begin with, I don’t think Mr. Scalia had much to do with this.

    And the ruling didn’t say everyone was entitled to a gun, but I’m willing to bet you already knew that.

  39. RabbitDinner says:

    @stinerman: Meh the weapon was legal since you don’t need a permit for one in that state, just sawing it off was illegal

  40. Isajeep says:

    I live a few blocks away from were this happened…heh.

    Anyways; no, contrary to popular opinion (moreover, this article), it’s NOT illegal to own a Short-Barreled Shotgun in Wisconsin, and most other states in the country. To own one, you have to comply with the National Firearms Act of 1934, which involves paying a $200 tax and waiting a few months for the ATF to approve your paperwork for one. This guy obviously didn’t follow the NFA, and was charged for possession of an unregistered short-barreled shotgun.

  41. fall_farewell says:

    I’ve been waiting for the ACLU to stand up and fight this lawnmower abuse. Outrageous. Oh wait, Fox is interviewing John Deere about it right now…. brb

  42. @Isajeep:

    Semantics. He didn’t get a NFA tax stamp, therefore what he did was illegal. It’s more accurate to say short barreled shotguns are not BANNED in Wisconsin, just subject to the NFA.

  43. Isajeep says:

    @krylonultraflat:

    Exactly. The article said “it’s illegal to own a sawed-off shotgun,” which is incorrect.

  44. RISwampyankee says:

    Oh yeah, this is sooo Wisconsin. Wisconsin is doing all it can to be the Alabama of the north.

  45. bombaxstar says:

    LOL.

    I could imagine a customer now

    “Can you tell me how to fix my push mower?”

    “Umm what’s wrong with it?”

    “It wouldn’t start so I shot it.”

    “…[click]“

  46. MsFeasance says:

    Notice from the original article that:
    1) This guy was drunk at 9:30 AM in the morning.
    2) This guy still lives at his mother’s house.
    3) In the basement.

    And yet, people say that rednecks all live in the South.

  47. gliscameria says:

    Who hasn’t shot an appliance for malfunctioning? By applying the same method my water heater now doubles as an irrigation system.

  48. MagnusGazelle says:

    I have been a Lawn Mower Dealer for over 30 Years. I could write a book on the stupid things people do to their Lawn Mowers. I haven’t..because I said to myself…”What idiot would read such things.” Well I guess I have found those idiots. Maybe I should write that book. Maybe I could actually make more money that I do in the Lawn Mower Business.
