Get 5% (Or More) Off Anything Anything At Amazon

3939 views

ProBargainHunter tells us how to snag 5-15% in extra savings on Amazon by tweaking the "Quick Picks" function.

1. Be an Amazon member
2. Log in
3. Locate similar, companion or accessory items to the one you want to buy and click "I own this item." For instance, if you want a Sony PSP, claim ownership of a PSP 2GB Memory Stick
4. Wait a day
5. Go to Today's Deals
6. At bottom it says "(Your Name)'s Quick Picks"
7. The item you really want to buy might show up there with 5-15% discount

The Quick Picks are normally based on your previous purchases. But by using the "I own this item" on related items, you may be able to get a deal on a pricey item. It won't work on everything, we're guessing it works best on things where the accessory can only be used for just one item, the item you want.

Amazon will certainly "fix" this soon :)

I wonder if this works with books too...

I wish I'd known this before I dropped $1000+ on a camera.

I've been using this for a while now... It sometimes works if you clear everything out that you've recommended and clear your viewing history. But it works much better if you start with a new account.

@nsv:
Ouch! Me too. Just got a 40D.

I've been doing this for about a year. Once every few weeks, I have to clean out my "recommendations" so that only what I'm interested in buying is on the list. Requires a wee bit of patience, but things always show up eventually.

@ThunderRoad: "Amazon will certainly "fix" this soon :) "

...sounds like someone doesn't understand the concept of "price discrimination".

Create a new account

Goto the item you want to buy.

Amazon usually has a buy this item and item B and save immediately below the pictures.

Goto item B

Say you own item B

Goto quick picks

Save 5%

Almost always works as amazon is already saying those two items are the ones it considers most related.

And fwiw this only works on items that amazon itself sells, not 3rd party marketplace items. Best used on items with very little price variance as even if amazon sells it they are often not the cheapest. However I got 5% off an xbox 360, free shipping and no tax this way.

Instead of clicking 'own', I just stick what I want in the cart, but don't buy it yet. It usually pops up in a day or two. Saved quite a bit (I think about 70 bucks) on a 360 with GTA that way. The only problem with this feature is it remembers -forever-, and Im too lazy to figure out how to clear its memory. I bought a textbook once for school so now it wants to sell me every history textbook ever written.

Hmm, maybe that's why all my quick picks are accounting text books...

i got $90 off of my iMac with this :)
