British Airways yanks beef from the menu because

"We can only serve two options and beef and pork obviously have religious restrictions.

"We have to try to use two meals which appeal to as many customers as possible."

BA says that cost has (cough) nothing to do with it. [Daily Mail]

Not complaining, had some beef on a BA flight over to LHR the other day and it was nothing but foul. Not going to be missed in my book.

Yep, absolutely nothing to do with cost.

Wow, we're going places aren't we? First, cost cutting in the form of "environmental concerns" and now, costing cutting with religion too. What's next? I have a feeling that the answer will be a major surprise.

As long as they still offer the microwave Cordon Blue Hobby Kit all is not lost.

Last time I flew, my meal was so foul, that I ate bread and butter only.

I was served ''ravioli'', it tasted more like rubber. It was worse than those frozen 99cents meals that you can buy.

So I don't know if it was chicken/beef/pork, but meat was awful.

@uberbucket: The problem is that it tastes WORSE than usual microwave food. *sigh*

I love the Daily Mail making this into some kind of nationalist cause. Expect a BNP boycott of BA!

Although it is arguably the best newspaper in the world.

700 Million Plus Hindus who don't eat beef and are making more money each year. Yeah there's no reason for an airline to consider them.

What was served for dinner tonight?

It was a choice between fish pie and a chicken dish.

Yes, I remember. I had the lasagna.

WINNER!

I'm a picky eater at the best of times, but airline food is the worst thing in the whole world. They would be better off just serving chips and sandwiches for every meal than trying to pass off the frozen turds they "cook" for you at the moment.

Every microwave meal I have ever had tastes better than airline food...

Gone are the days when I actually looked forward to the meal. Onboard meals used to be pretty tasty. No matter what they serve now, if anything at all, is not going to be very good. Unless you fly first class. I've only had the pleasure of flying 1st class a couple of times and my meals were still pretty good.

Generally, either I carry some food on with me or I will get to the airport early and grab something to eat before I board.

If you can, request the Kosher Meal. My dad and I have been doing this for a few years now. We haven't flown in a while due to the prices, but when we did the food was pretty good.

user-pic

obviously BA should get in touch with Taco Bell and see where they're getting their beef

@Git Em SteveDave: Captain Oveur: What is it, Doctor? What's going on?

Rumack: I'm not sure. I haven't seen anything like this since the Anita Bryant concert.

Why in the world is this a big deal? Even if it is a cost cutting measure, would you rather have them pass that money along to your bill? It's not like going without beef (or even meat in general!) for one meal is going to kill you. It might even be better food!

What harm would it do to you if they changed their ENTIRE menu to kosher, vegan, and whatever other dietary restrictions large amounts of people embrace? You'd still be free to eat those products yourself, you'd still be able to find them elsewhere. You'd still get food, and it could still be delicious (or passable, knowing airline food). You'd still get a seat, on a plane, that is taking you where you want to do. What in the world is wrong with it?

@adambadam:

And now...it'll be nothing by fowl...

user-pic

My wife and I always fly in First (either redeeming miles for seats/upgrades or paying for it outright), and we usually request a Cold Seafood meal instead of whatever's being served on the flight. We get a salad, a roll and what amounts to a large shrimp cocktail with about six to eight jumbo shrimp.

It usually looks better than whatever's being served to the other pax, and I suspect it's better for us, too.

@Feba:

My thoughts exactly. Airlines are getting reamed by rising fuel prices, they have to cut costs or raise ticket prices. Seeing as how 99% of customers purchase a ticket based on price alone (I know I do), airlines have to cut costs to remain competitive.

Besides that, the UK has a sizable Muslim population (no pork) and a close connection to majority Hindu India (no beef), so while I agree it's a bit of a smokescreen to attribute the menu change to religion, I'm sure it is an issue they've had to deal with.

user-pic

@wwwhitney: I think you're exactly right. BA can hardly say, "We're getting too many Muslims and Hindus for beef to be viable," so they have to be more careful with their messaging. On the other hand, special meals have always been available, so I don't know what the issue is unless BA is going fully Halal, etc.

user-pic

who wants airline beef anyway? especially if prepared by brits?

user-pic

@Feba: It's a big deal because the Daily Mail is a right-leaning paper and the decision to not serve beef possibly being related to Hindu or Muslim passengers is exactly the kind of thing they lose their shit over. They are always freaking out about immigrants and Islam and love to write crap supporting the BNP. It's not actually a big deal, in real life. The Mail is just using it as a rallying point for more evidence that England is losing its "Englishness".
