*gasp*

Next week: Americans eat food!

I would call the "snapshot of fuel costs."

I know, its crazy at $3.50 a gallon people would rather get over 13mpg.

And when gas prices go back down, people will trade in their small car and get a big SUV again. Paid for with their no-doc loan or inflated HELOC, of course. Lather, rinse, repeat. ;-)

@jefffromNY:

I agree. I have a Yaris, and it's definitely nice to be able to fill up for $30 and drive for two weeks.

@LatherRinseRepeat: And if gas prices don't go down, we'll actually start importing sane cars from europe, and maybe everyone in LA won't get lung cancer from the continual blanket of aresolized roofing tar we refer to as "air".

With so many nice high quality subcompacts out now in the US, (Fit, Versa, Yaris, Smart ForTwo, etc.) I'm not really surprised.

Funny coincidence. I was just reading a story in the paper that started "An elderly driver was killed Monday afternoon when his car was crushed by an SUV."

Driving a subcompact feels a bit like bringing a knife to a gun fight.

When our knees get the official designation of "crumple zone" from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, then I will shoehorn my family into a gas sipping euro-trash sewing machine. Until then, my family is still worth 17 mpg.
