Yep, the title is misleading.
That's because there isn't much DIY you can do to a furnace. Make sure you always change the filters regularly, hose off the condensing unit outside periodically, and that's about all you can really DIY without hurting yourself or blowing up your house unless you know what you're doing. For the more adventurous, make sure your ductwork isn't leaking anywhere in the attic/basement, but that's about it.
@FLConsumer: I can read electric diagrams and part numbers so I was able to change a broken relay in our furnace last summer. Technical information about how furnaces work would have come in handy at that time. The operation was successful but I would have liked less guesswork on my part.
One thing I've learned to do is replace the electric igniter. These things burn up about once every two years. If you call a service person out, it's a $300 repair. You can get igniters for less than $50 on the internet, or at local parts places.
Hint: don't touch the element on it. It will burn out in less than a week, if you do!
Misleading. The article was tips on dealing with dealers, manufacturers, etc. I was expecting do-it-yourself type of advice.
